Addison L. Edwards was born on October 27, 1845. He enlisted, date unknown, as Pvt., Co. K, 14th Virginia Infantry. Addison was captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and held as a prisoner of war at Fort McHenry, Ft. Delaware, and Point Lookout, Maryland. He was apparently exchanged as he rejoined his company until December 7, 1863. Addison was captured again at Five Forks on April 1, 1865. He was held as a priosner of war at City Point (Hopewell, Virginia) until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland where he took the Oath of Allegiance and was released on June 11, 1865.

Joseph Welch Reynolds, brother of Mary Frances Reynolds Eggleston contracted polio when he was 13 years old. Unlike many victims, he recovered almost completely and was left with only a weakness in his left leg, ultimately until his death.

Joseph Welch Reynolds was named for his mother's brother, Joseph Alpha Carter, Jr. who died the year he was born; and the Welch name came from Mr. William Welch Clark who was the protector of his father, Samuel Lovelace Reynolds. After the death of his mother, Mary Lou (Molly) Reynolds, Mr. Clark took Sam under his wing and educated him. Molly, who died when Sam was 15 years old, contracted appendicitis, it ruptured, and she died of Sepsis. Mr. Welch Clark lived in a historic house on Main Street, Danville, VA and was a well know bachelor who traveled widely and is remembered by even distant family members and community members as having brought back from a trip to Florida, an alligator for a pet. See photograph of Mr. Welch Clark and his alligator from circa 1918-1921. Mr. Clark never married and had no issue, but my father loved him as though he was his father.

In 1728, William Byrd headed an expedition sent to determine the true boundary between Virginia and North Carolina. One night late that summer, the party camped upstream from what is now Danville, Byrd was so taken with the beauty of the land, that he prophesied a future settlement in the vicinity, where people would live ?with much comfort and gaiety of Heart.? The river along which he camped was named the ?Dan?, for Byrd, supposing himself to be in the land of plenty, felt he had wandered ?from Dan to Beersheba?.
The first white settlement (numerous Native American tribes had lived in the area) occurred downstream from Byrd?s campsite in 1792, at a spot along the river shallow enough to allow fording. It was named 'Wynne?s Falls,? after the first settler. The village has a ?social? reason for its origin, since it was here that pioneering Revolutionary War veterans met once a year to fish and talk over old times.
The establishment by the General Assembly of a tobacco warehouse at Wynne?s Falls in 1793 was the beginning of ?The World?s Best Tobacco Market.? Virginia?s largest market for bright leaf tobacco. The village was renamed Danville by act of the Virginia Legislature on November 23, 1793. A charter for the town was drawn up February 17, 1830, but by the time of its issue, the population had exceeded the pre-arranged boundaries. This necessitated a new charter, which was issued in 1833. In that year, James Lanier was elected the first mayor, assisted by a council of ?twelve fit and able men.?
On July 22, 1882, six of Danville's enterprising citizens founded the Riverside Cotton Mills, which was in its day known the country over as Dan River Inc., the largest single-unit textile mill in the world. The mill is now closed, and many of its buildings have been torn down and the bricks sold. One very important building, "The White Mill," is now being renovated as an apartment complex.
On September 9, 1882, Danville mayor John H. Johnston shot and killed his chief of police John E. Hatcher, after Hatcher demanded an apology for a statement Johnston had made regarding unaccounted fine money. Johnston was charged with murder, and acquitted at trial.

2 lbs. yellow squash cut in 1/4 slices (4cups
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp. salt
1 onion, chopped
1 red sweet pepper, chopped
1/2 cup margarine
1 egg, beaten
1 cup cheddar cheese
1 8 oz. can water chestnuts, drained
2/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp pepper

Steam vegetables OR put squash, onions, pepper in the 1/2 cup water with the margarine and cook just until tender. Add beaten egg to mayonnaise, sugar, and pepper and melted margarine if veg. steamed.. Add cheddar cheese and water chestnuts. Spoon all into baking dish and bake at 350 for @30 minutes. Freezes really well.

Cynthia Carter Kirkland passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. She was born on November 10, 1947, in Danville, Va. to the late William and Rowena Carter. Cindy was a graduate of George Washington High School, received her Associates and Bachelors degrees from Averett University, and her Masters from Old Dominion University. She spent her entire professional career dedicated to working in social services in Danville, Va., Cumberland County NC Social Service, DSS in Virginia Beach, Va. and as Director of Social Services in Lynchburg, Va. She is survived by her son, Alex Kirkland, and grandson, Jake Kirkland, of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.; her daughter, Anna Kirkland of Greenville, S.C.; her sisters, Susan Carter and Billie Wyatt; brother, Jim Wyatt of Danville, Va.; and nephew, Trey Yeatts and family of Richmond, Va. A funeral will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating.
