  1. 1.  IMMIGRANT Giles1 CarterIMMIGRANT Giles1 Carter was born 24 Apr 1635, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England; died 12 Feb 1700/01, Turkey Island, Henrico Co., Virginia.

Under Berkley's administration, the first generation of what would be known as the Virginian aristocracy came into existence before the English Civil War ended. These included the founders of powerful dynasties such as John Carter, Richard Lee, Benjamin Harrison, the first Randolph and Thomas Stegg (or Stegge) who amassed the Byrd wealth. All of the colonizers who rose socially had connections, wealth and education. These advantages promoted them to the highest rungs of the colonial society. The families they founded ruled the Royal colony of Virginia for more than a century.
The Byrd, Beverley, Carter, Culpepper, Isham, Washington, Spencer, Randolph, Jefferson, Bland, Beverely, Bolling, Eppe and Hackett families intermarried, creating a web of overlapping kinships. They sat on the governing boards of the colony and promoted each others interests. Berkeley also fostered the rise of the General Assembly from a small body into a replica of the Parliament in England, and promoted a separation of power between provincial and county governments. He worked to create a royalist society, where an elite ruled over the great masses of yeoman farmers, free and enslaved African Americans, indentured servants and marginal farmers who leased their land. A brief look at some of the families who served in the Virginia House of Burgesses displays a continuity of the landed-gentry class in the governing class of the colony. In 1664 Lawrence Washington and William Randolph were elected members of the House of Burgesses. The 1736-1740 legislative session had representatives of the Randolph, Carter, Fitzhugh, Beverely and Berkeley families seated, and the 1776 Assembly had Carters, Randolphs and Lees as well as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Wm. Burnett says "I think we are beginning (or, at least, are on the verge of beginning) to get some deeper insights into what was going on in 17th century Virginia as it relates to some particular families on which we have spent some of our time researching."

?My sense is that we should get a better understanding of what was going on on Turkey Island in Henrico County in the 17the century, before the Randolph family (another one of my ancestral lines, by the way, having the distinction of being the earliest known (to me) mother in my maternal line of mother?s mother?s mother?s etc.) began building its 18th century mega-mansion.

?Giles Carter, whose progeny (son Theodoric with many siblings) is undisputed, is considered by all researchers known to me to have been born in Gloucestershire England. Everything else is a matter of dispute with some very sophisticated arguments to advance each theory as to from whom he descended and who he married or to discredit other theories on those subjects.

?Giles Carter may well have been a teenage indentured servant, with relatives, at least by marriage, of royal descendency. If so, his indenture occurred a few years, perhaps a decade, before a pair of Saunders (cited by Justin) came over to America.

?(There is a difference between the indentures of Giles Carter and the Saunders which I suspect we will find is important. Giles? indenture conformed to a policy of the Cromwell?s Commonwealth. The Saunders came over when Cromwell?s associates were being hanged for high treason.)

?Now let me share with you my (current) radical thought. The Carters, Saunders, Crumps, Crewes, Sewalls et al. were involved in dynastic strategies (maybe not a monolithic strategy, but several strategies that collectively looked out for the economic interests and sought to secure economically viable positions for the younger members of the ?clans?).

?That ?indentured service? or ?apprenticeship? positions were not lower class stable boys persuaded to trade years of labor for passage over to the new world, but devices by which the sovereign power granted subsidies (land for numbers of indentured servants transported from England to America).

?The Merchant-Venturers of Bristol, who had suffered under the English Civil War, considered the tobacco of Virginia a game-changing event. If that is so, why not exploit the sovereign?s deal to grant land in Virginia in exchange for passage of ?servants? to America.

?I am proposing that we re-examine the research on the 17th century immigration to Virginia in a new light. That we take with a grain of salt all 21st century explanations of what 17th century terms mean ? indentures, land for passage of servants, even dowries and bequests.

?Instead, we consider the 17th century settling of Virginia as the concerted exploitation of ?new lands? involving the sovereign power and a select number of families that have achieved power and influence over the centuries and are determined to exploit the situation to their advantage.

A corollary to the above argument of ?concerted action by mercantile families? suggests that we consider wills and property transactions not just from the standpoint of nuclear families as we are used to thinking in the 21st century, but as sometimes (often?) part of dynastic strategies.

Virginia County boundaries based on a 1770 map

The Illustration, below, of Virginia County boundaries, uses the following as a base map: A New and Accurate Map of Virginia Wherein most of the Counties are laid down from Actual Surveys. With A Concise Account of the Number of Inhabitants, the Trade, Soil, and Produce of that Province. By John Henry. Engraved by Thomas Jefferys Geographer to the King. London, Thos. Jefferys, 1770. Call Number: G3880 1770 .H4 Vault. Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division. County names are transcribed below the map and numbering has been added to show their location. Colorfill has been added to highlight County boundaries. Counties that were listed without boundaries defined are represented without colorfilled areas. The Muster Rolls of Pendleton Militia on 6 Sep 1794 in Captain William Janes' Company were: Michael Arbogast, Jacob Gum, Charles Halterman, and Henry Simmons ( Library of Congress )

    Birth:
The interior of Saint John the Baptist Church in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England

    Name:
This from another researcher, Peyton Carter, 1 Apr 2003. I have received confirmation from the records office in Gloucestershire, England, of the baptismal record of Giles Carter, who immigrated to Henrico County, Virginia. Here is the actual reply I received:

"A member of staff checked the baptism register for the parish of Cirenchester (P86) for the year 1635 and I can confirm that the baptism of Gyles, son of Theodor [Theodore] Cartor is recorded. The spelling of names was not standardized until fairly recently and so the slight difference in spelling of both the christian and surnames is not significant."

Giles1 married Hannah Crew/Crews/Crewes. Hannah (daughter of Captain James Crew/Crews/Crewes and Consort of James Crew/Crews) was born Est 1655, Turkey Island, Henrico Co., Virginia; died 1702, Varina, Henrico, Virginia . [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    http://oliverdreams.tripod.com/GilesCarter.html

Susannah Carter-2, born before 1676, and mentioned in James Crewes? will, the first wife of Daniel Price, Sr.-ii, the man to whom James Crewes left his best clothes. Daniel-ii was also the child mentioned in the will of John Rowan in the 1660?s.

Her second husband was Thomas Williamson. She was the mother of Daniel Price, Jr.-iii Daniel, Sr.-ii was the son of John Price-i mentioned in John Rowan?s will. His mother had married, as her third husband, the man who was James Crewes? business partner.

John Rowans Will is dated 1 May 1662. He leaves Orphans Daniel and John Price items. Everyone has assumed that these are the Children of Susanna Carter, d/o Giles and Hannah Crew. So they must have been born by 1662, unless Daniel Price who married Susanna Carter was the orphan. The dates are funky and do not work for Daniel Price's and Susanna Carter's children.

    Name:
Daniel Price m. Susanna Carter Abt 1654 ? abt 01 Aug 1692 They married after 23 July 1676. She was the daughter of Giles Carter and Hannah Crew. Susanna m2nd Thomas Williamson. Notes:

Mary Carter, d/o Giles had orphans of Thomas Davis, her husband, when she married Thomas Totty and produced at least 2 children with him. I speculate she would have named one of the children Giles and another Thomas; When she married 2nd to Thomas Totty, George Jefferson stood security for the bond.

It appears there are two Mary Carters in Henrico; Mary, d/o Giles Carter m. James Davis so named in her father's will. This Mary then marries Thomas Totty proven by Henrico records; [George Jefferson is surety]
2nd Mary Elizabeth Carter is the d/o Joseph and documents prove she is married to a James Davis. 1738 Lancaster.

The unproved marriage report of a Mary Carter to James Osborne is certainly questionable as she is said to be married to him [Osborne] while married to Davis & Totty. We have proved the marriages to Davis and Totty; no evidence is seen to substantiate the purported Osborne relationship. Too many Mary's; not enough data. mfe

    Notes:

April Court 1743. John Williamson [brother of deceased] and Elizabeth Williamson [wife of deceased] appointed executors of Cuthbert Williamson, deceased, present his will which is not signed. John Maddox states he was asked by said Cuthbert to go to John Price to get him to write the will. When Price came to the house, he was afraid to go into the room because said Cuthbert was sick with the flux. Will was written on directions given by Cuthbert, and later read to him by John Williamson and deceased said it was very well. John Price deposed that he wrote will on instructions given by John Maddox. Will was admitted to probate, Robert Sharp, Benjamin Burton, and James Cocke, securities. Elizabeth Williamson, relict and widow of Cuthbert, relinquished all benefit and advantage to herself from said will. Henry Stokes, John Watson, Matthew Hobson, and John Mosby to appraise. Notes:

Theodrick Carter, II and Anne Waddill were the parents of Nancy Waddill Carter. Anne Waddill was baptized January 24, 1713, according to the register of St. Peter's parish, which encompassed New Kent County. Her parents were William and Sarah Dennis Waddill. William was elected vestryman of St. Peter's, on June 1, 1704, and served in
this capacity for at least thirty-five years. The author James Branch Cabell,a descendant of John Waddill, discussed the Waddills in his book "The Majors and Their Marriages." Theodrick Carter and Anne Waddill lived for a time in New Kent County. According to the register of St. Peter's parish, their first child John was baptized on October 30, 1737. Theodrick appeared in the Amelia County tithables list of June 10, 1747 in John Nash's district (this area became part of Prince Edward County in 1754); he is absent from the list Nash compiled for the same district on June 10, 1745. He must therefore have migrated from New
Kent County to present-day Prince Edward County sometime between these two dates. Nancy was born June 15, 1749, probably at her father's estate "Hickory Hill" (also known as "Hickory Grove"). According to tradition, the house was built around 1750; however, it may have been built three years earlier, since we know that Theodrick was living in John Nash's tax district on June 10, 1747.
John Wood's 1820 map of Prince Edward County shows the location of Hickory Hill. Two miles west of Hampden-Sydney College is the notation "Capt. Carter's." Captain Carter was Samuel Carter, Nancy's brother. Samuel inherited Hickory Hill from his father in 1777. Destroyed by fire in 1933, Hickory Hill was described four years later in the Works Projects Administration survey of Prince Edward County homes: [Hickory Hill] was not a show place except for its splendid boxwood and cedar hedge and lovely gardens. It was a plain frame house, or rather two houses connected by a little square room. The first of these traditions says it was built in 1750, a story and a half with small rooms except for one large reception room, which was beautifully paneled, and with one side of carved oak. The other part of the house was built by William H. Venable, when he bought the plantation in 1853 from Edward Carter [Samuel's son]. Mr. Venable built a large, square, two-story frame building, with large rooms and ample halls. The many outbuildings around the mansion house made the place quite a little settlement. The large grove of hickories flanking it on the south gave the place its name.
Nancy's father was one of Prince Edward County's most prominent planters. He purchased 975 acres in old Amelia County on September 20, 1748, and bought and sold other parcels of land up to the time of his death. A member of the Anglican church, Theodrick offered 300 acres of land to St. Patrick's parish for its use as a glebe, or plot of land granted to the local clergyman as part of his benefice during his tenure of office.

Thomas and Nancy Thompson probably named their fourth child in honor of her brother, Samuel Carter. Samuel distinguished himself in the military, in politics, and as a businessman. A member of the 1st Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War, he and seven other officers were granted the honor of personally welcoming the Marquis de Lafayette during the great soldier and statesman's visit to Richmond in October, 1824 (Richmond Enquirer, October 29, 1824, page 3). Samuel at various times held the county offices of sheriff, magistrate, and coroner; in 1805-1806 he represented Prince Edward County in the Virginia Assembly. In the late 1790s he was a trustee of a company which improved navigation on the Appomattox River. Later, he became a charter trustee of the Junction Canal Company. In 1825 the company constructed a canal which linked the Appomattox and Little Roanoke rivers. John Wood's map of Prince Edward County shows Samuel's mill at the mid-point of this canal.

Albemarle Co. deed dated 12 Nov. 1760 shows that she, Elizabeth, w/o John Carter, was the daughter of John Gannaway Sr.:

" Jno. Gannaway, Sr. to Theodorick Carter, son of John Carter of Henrico Co....love for Theodorick Carter, grandson..."

John and Elizabeth's son Jacob named one of his children Elizabeth Gannaway Carter (she was mentioned in John's 1785 will as his granddaughter Betsy Gannaway Carter), and another of Jacob's descendants in Henrico Co. was named John Carter Gannaway Epes.

The other Carter is a William Carter. He is mentioned in the chancery documents in 1789 as the defendant against Onan Moody. Onan Moody was the illegitimate daughter (or son, not sure) of Frances Moody and Gerard Ellyson. Gerard's widow, Sarah (nee Crews), married William Carter in 1771. It was published in the Purdie and Dixon Gazette that she was 85 and he only 23! (Making William born in 1748). It also mentions that he is the son of John Carter of Henrico County. (This John Carter is the son of Theodrick Carter, the son of Giles Carter.) William had the following siblings:
    1. Theodrick Carter m. Sally Eelbank in Lunenburg, VA in 1763
    2. John Carter m. Anne
    3. Frances Carter m. Robert Walton (son of Robert Walton and Mary Hughes, and brother to George Walton, signer of the Decl. of Ind.) in Charlotte County, VA
    4. Sherwood Carter m. Frances
    5. Jacob Carter m. Mary
I am not sure what happens to this William Carter, but I suspect he was widowed not long after (with a pocket full of cash). There are a couple of possibilities of which William Carter he is that turns up later in a different place.
    1. William Carter married Mary Scott in Lunenburg County in 1779. He moves to Prince Edward County, where his will is found in 1812. (This seems likely, as then his brother Theodrick was married in the same county in 1763.)
    2. William Carter married Jane Scott in Powhatan Co., VA in 1798.
    3. William Carter married Sarah Overstreet in Goochland in 1773.
    4. William Carter married Nancy Scott in Goochland in 1802.

Image 1816 second page of Poval's will. Looks like it was signed Poval Carter so he may have written the will himself. Younger children Ann, Molly and Robert are mentioned on this page to have items after wife's death.

Note The Witness to the will Obadiah Smith is Son Giles Carter's father-in-Law. Giles Married Mary Smith and had several sons that settled in the Richmond area. Paul Jesperson's wife is a descendant of this family and there is another descendant who tested his dna on 23 and me. The test was supposed to indicate R1a1a....haven't seen these results. Jesperson was supposed to have a male ancestor to be tested, but I don't think he ever did.

Image pc001 Is an administrators account of Poval Carter Son of Daniel Carter concerning the Will of Daniel Carter Son John (B) Carter who lived on an adjoining farm witnessed the Will. John and Susannah were not named in the will Daniel was more concerned with his unmarried daughters . Daniel's life Jane was deceased by the time of the will.

We know that Poval Carter of Henrico County had a son Robert from his LWT recorded on page 1815 of Volume 4 of the Miscellaneous Records of Henrico Co., Va. This will recites " Item, I give & Bequeath this Land & houses where I now live after the death of my Wife to my son Robert to him & his heirs. " We also know that this Robert Carter was born after 1744 because he was under 21 years of age when in May 1765 Robert, orphan of Poval Carter, was bound out by Henrico Parish churchwardens. [HCOB 1763-1767/454]. This makes this Robert Carter of the appropriate age to be a candidate for the Robert Carter, in Henrico, to marry Susannah Evans in Goochland.

Eliza's great-uncle John Carter (through her mother's line) was the father of Francis Watkins Carter, who built the home which is currently open for tours as Carter House Museum in Franklin, TN. One of her cousins was Confederate Lt. Theodorick "Tod" Carter, who died in a battle with Union troops on the lawn of the home during the Battle of Franklin, November 30, 1864. In a sad tale reminiscent of so many of the era, family fought family as Eliza's son John joined the Union in combat with Missouri's Militia Regiment 5, Company B.

Richard Carter is shown in records as donating supplies which include many casks of Brandy, during the Revolutionary War. There is a Chancery Suit between Waddill Carter's Widow Mildred Wade (Lewis) which is about the proceeds of the earnings from the still. I thought it interesting that the source of the Brandy donated by Richard is now known to have come from his father's still, which was also owned by Richard's brother, Waddill. - mfe

    Notes:

Nancy Waddill Carter (who married Thompson) had a brother, Waddill Carter. I have a copy of Waddill Carter's will from 1782, in which he mentions his "young son John." I am suspecting (but have not proven) that this John may be my long lost John Carter for whom I have spent years searching.

Here is what I know of my family (taken from a family ledger owned by William below and court records):

    John Carter 25 March 1775 - 17 December 1852 married 21 March 1821 Oney Pollard 3 Sept. 1790 - after 1850
    His children were:
    1. William R. Carter 16 Sept. 1809 - 7 Feb. 1886 married 4 Feb. 1846 Mary Elizabeth Pollard 1 May 1829 - 1878
    2. Beverly Atwood Carter 3 July 1813 - 17 Sept. 1862 at the
    Battle of Sharpsburg (unmarried)
    3. Mary Elizabeth Carter 21 July 1821 - after 1880 married James Davis 16 Jan. 1799 - 8 Sept. 1845

My John Carter first shows up on Amelia County Census
Records in 1820. There is a John Carter on the 1810 Census in Prince Edward who is described as being married and with one infant son (which would match my John's description). It is clear to me that John was married to another woman before he married Oney Pollard in Amelia in 1821, since all three of his children were born before then.
I have been somewhat hung up on the middle name of one of John's sons: Atwood. There are not many Atwoods in Virginia at this time. They seem to either be in Culpepper County (and they all move to present day West Virginia) or in Prince Edward County. Although I have not been able to find intermarriage between the Carters and the Atwoods, I have made this link: James Atwood dies in PEC in 1771. His will is witnessed by James Wade and Charles Wade. James and Charles Wade are the father and brother of Mildred Wade, who married Waddill Carter around 1765 in PEC. The name Atwood is too obscure (unlike say "Franklin") for there not to have been anyone to have known somebody of that name. -Peyton Carter on GenForum

Elizabeth Carter 4. Mildred Wade Carter, who married Anderson Wade in 1799 (See note from Carol Clemmer) 5. John Carter. Waddill died in 1782 and Mildred remarried in 1790 to Robert Anderson. Apparently, Robert Anderson died in 1802 and Mildred Anderson remarried AGAIN to Joseph Lewis in 1803 (as detailed in Anderson's estate papers).

From http://www.virginians.com/t.htm?7076 Waddill Carter married Mildred, likely Mildred Wade. Virginia reimbursed Carter for bacon and beef he provided during the Revolution.

    --PAGE 14--
Theodrick made his will on December 7, 1777. The executors of his estate were Nathaniel Venable and Francis Watkins, two of Prince Edward County's most respected citizens. Venable was a member of the Virginia Assembly in 1766-1768; three of his sons were educated at Princeton, and one served in the United States Congress. Venable lived at Slate Hill, now in the National Register of Historic Places. Watkins was deputy clerk of the Prince Edward County court from 1767 to 1783; he was appointed clerk in 1783, retiring from that office in 1823. His home was called "Poplar Hill." Venable and Watkins were also charter trustees of Hampden-Sydney College, founded in Prince Edward County in 1776.
The following is Theodrick Carter's will:
In the name of God, Amen: I Theodrick Carter of the Parish of Saint Patrick and County of Prince Edward being of perfect and sound mind and memory do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner following.
First, I give unto my daughter Susannah Stubblefield and sons John, Theodrick and William Carter each one shilling sterling. I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Carter one negro man named Dick, and one feather bed and furniture to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath my daughter Nanny Waddill Thompson one negro girl named Tibb now in her possession, also two cows and calves to her and her heirs forever. I give and bequeath unto my son Waddill Carter that part of my lands within the following bounds, to begin at the cross branch at the road, to run a straight line by the grave yard to his own line, all the land below this line on the North side of said road, also one negro man named Tom to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Molley Carter one negro girl named Agg and one negro girl named Nanny, also the mare I purchased of Col. Robert Lawson, her own saddle and bridle, one feather bed and furniture, four head of sheep and two cows, to her and her heirs forever. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Salley Carter one negro boy named Will and
one negro boy named Abraham, the sorrel mare I purchased of Charles Williamson, one feather bed and furniture, her own saddle and bridle, four head of sheep and two cows, to
her and her heirs forever. I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Carter the remainder of the lands and plantation whereon I now live and the following negros, Moll and her child Neptune, also all and residue of my estate not hereinbefore particularly mentioned of what kind or nature
soever, except two-thirds of my pewter and the two negroes named Jack and Sarah, these two negroes Jack and Sarah I leave to my two daughters Molley and Salley for their support till they marry or die and then my son Samuel, and desire that my executors hereafter named may devide my pewter into three equal parts and allot to my son Samuel
and daughters Molley and Salley each and equal parts thereof, the estate herein willed to my son Samuel I give to him and his heirs forever, and it is my will that so long as my daughters Molley and Salley live single that they have the free use and liberty of their chamber in my dwelling house without the denial or interruption of my son Samuel. It is my further will that should my said son Samuel depart this life without leaving issue, in that case the lands herein willed to him and every part of my estate bequeathed.
    --PAGE 15--
him, I give and bequeath unto my said two daughters Molley and Sally to be equally devided between them by my executors hereafter named unless my said two daughters
should agree on a division themselves, which estate I bequeath to them and their heirs forever, (should it so happen my son Samuel) It is my will that all the negroes I'm possessed of be continued on my plantation the next year to make a crop. Lastly I do constitute and appoint my son Waddill Carter and friends Nathaniel Venable and Francis Watkins Executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking and declaring void all other wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of December in the year of Christ one thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven.

That Patriot Samuel Carter is the son of Ann Waddill and the husband of Elizabeth McRobert is proven by his associations with his brothers, Waddill, and his Chancery Suit in Prince Edward for his share of his Father's Still [purchased by Theodorick3 and his son, Waddill. He is also the elder of the two, closely related Samuel's. The Samuel Carter who is the owner of Carter's Tavern is the son of Theodorick4 and his wife, Judith Cunningham. This Samuel Carter, Married Elizabeth H. Neal 8 Sep 1812 in Halifax Co., VA. [Original marriage record shows Elizabeth H. Bibb as she is a Widow, and whose mother is Martha Neal and Bondsman or Security as Wm. Neale Jr.] His 2nd wife, Betsy M. Holcomb is the Widow of John H. Holcomb, and names her Holcomb sons in her will of 1844. The Margaret B. Carter who witnesses her Will, is identified as her Sister-in-law. It should also be noted that the Household of Samuel Carter and Betsy included the orphan of his nephew, William and Mary Hobson, as well as the Holcomb orphans. Additionally, Samuel 'Tavern Keeper' identifies his brother as Alexander Carter.

Samuel Carter (-1830) gave support to the Army during the Revolution. He represented Prince Edward County in the Virginia House of Delegates (1805-6).

    Samuel's will executed 17 Dec 1829, probated 18 May 1830, Pr. Edw. Co., VA; Witnesses: J. Michaux, J. W. Franklin, R. Booker, James Madison; Executors: sons William M. & Edward A., & son-in-law John P. Mittauer.

    Died:

The May 4, 1830 issue of the Richmond Gazette carried the following notice of Samuel's death:

Died, on the 29 ult. at his residence in Prince Edward county, Capt. Samuel Carter, in the 76th year of his age. The disease which terminated his existence was of long standing and grievous; but he bore it with the utmost patience, and met death with a firmness that had characterized him throughout his long and useful life. It cannot be necessary to lay before the public a particular detail of the useful part he acted, during an arduous struggle for Liberty and Independence: let it suffice to say, he embarked in the cause of freedom at the earliest period of our conflict with the Mother County, and his zeal never abated or tired in its defence. He was in the battles at Germantown, Long Island, Brandywine, and, in short, most of the hard-fought actions to the North, in which he distinguished himself as an undaunted, intrepid officer and soldier. His conduct and services after peace was established proved his ardent attachment to pure republican principles, and is worthy of all praise. He was soon called to fill, and did then also distinguish himself by a most happy, judicious exercise of his superior, natural, mental endowments. No one knew man better than Capt. Carter; and no one did, or can excel him in the possession of those rare qualities, which so pre-eminently fits man for usefulness to his fellow man. As a man, he was scrupulously just-- His hospitality was proverbial, and his charity, which was exercised for charity's sake, knew no bounds. As a husband and a father, he was affectionate and tender, almost to a fault-- As a master, he was kind and humane; and his superior he has not left behind him.

Giles Carter (Second) did not have a will and everyone seems to guess at his death date. These families have Giles and Povall as forenames in their descending lines... I don't see a Theodrick.... There may be some. There is only the one test that suggests Daniel Carter is a son of Povall Carter....

Povall Carter s/o Daniel, stands Security for the marriage of his Sister, Jane, who married Alexander Kent. Marriage Records verifies Father of Jane, Daniel is dec'd.
