    Notes:

Notes found at Danville Public Library by Mary Frances
Eggleston list Julia Reynolds Ferguson East with cemetery
notes of Renan Hwy 640 with dates of death and birth from
    headstone.

Julia was over 23 years older than I, so I remember her
only as an adult. She was the smallest adult in the
family-perhaps 5'3", blond, and pretty. Mother used to say
jokingly that Julia was the onl one of her children she
didn't have to "look Up to," for Mother was shorter than
Julia. She attended school in Danville; the one that later
became Averette, I think. She liked to do things for
others and did not like to be on the "receiving end" too
often. She was a good manager of finances, an excellent
seamstress, and a lover of music, and a devout believer in
    her Lord.

  2. 5.  Mary Alice ReynoldsMary Alice Reynolds Descendancy chart to this point (3.Mary3, 2.Julia2, 1.Nancy1) was born May 1886, Staunton River District, Pittsylvania, Virginia; died 27 Jan 1923, Pittsylvania Cpunty, Virginia; was buried , Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Alice married when I was three years old, so I don't
remember much about her at our home. I enjoyed going to
visit her and Jim and staying for days. She was almost
like a second mother to me. It was Alice who named me, and
because of that, she gave me a little gold ring when I was
perhaps five years old. When I was 14, Mother went to
Portsmouth for about a week to visit Julia and left Daddy
the three younger brothers and me for about a week. Mother
returned on a Sunday, and in preparation for her homecoming
Alice and I prepared a Sunday dinner. She was of a happy
disposition. I think the thing that means most to me now
is what Alice did for our family. As she was dying, she
asked Mother if she (Mother) had any music. Of course,
Mother did not them. Alice said she wanted them to sing!
Then she talked about the sweet music she heard, that it
was all around her! This was her happy theme until she lay
back on the bed and breathed her last. What a testimony.

    Notes:

Posey seemed to "take me under his wing". Even though I
was a child and he about grown, we wrestled hard. Once
when I was perhaps three or four years old, Posey was
plowing a double horse plow, and I wanted to ride the plow.
He was afraid I would get hurt, but rather than disappoint
me, he let me climb up on his back, put one foot in his hip
pocket, the other in his suspender, and ride around the
field as he plowed. Posey was a home boy - didn't like to
be far away from the family. He went to Bouis Creek School
in North Carolina but came home with homesickness. After
he was married he took a course in mechanics in Detroit,
even though it meant leaving his wife and baby at Mother's.
Posey had an inventive mind, very good at mechanics. He
had such a big heart that he found handling business not
his chief talent. He too, enjoyed singing and playing the
    guitar.

    Notes:

The following is an article Homie Stone Hubbard (Sam's
sister) found in an old DAR Magazine and sent to me. Date
    Unknown.
Article attributed to Bruce Reynolds, brother of Christine
Reynolds Stone, daughter of Keene Johnson Reynolds, s/o
    William Garrett Reynolds.

    "When your luck is all out and you're down in the mouth;
    when you're stuck in the North when you want to be South;
and the world looks a blank, and there's no one to love and
it seems even God's not in Heaven above - I've a cure for
that grouch and it works like a shot. I just think of the
things I am glad I AM NOT. I just think of the hundreds of
worse things I might be, then down on my knees I thank God
I am ME. Oh, yes, my blues disappear when I think what
I've GOT and quite soon I've forgotten the things I have
    not."

    -Bruce Reynolds

My first recollection of Bruce is when he was a teenage
boy. He was strong and proud of it. He could take me up
on one hand and lift me high over his head. What fun! He
went to Brookneal school for awhile, staying in the home of
Uncle Will Brumfield who encouraged him to continue his
education. Later he attended Fork Union Military Academy,
a boys' Baptist school. From there he went to the
University of Virginia, University of Iowa, and the Johns
Hopkins University, earning his Doctor of Science degree.
He was professor of Biology at the University of Virginia,
and was the heard of that department when he died. He was
the founder of the summer Graduate Department of Biology at
Mountain Lake, Va. at Mountain Lake. During World War I he
was First Lieutenant in the Air Service, Aircraft
Production. Some of his professional and social
    organizations were A.A.A.S. (Council 1953-56); A.ES., S.P;
    A.S.B. (President 1953-54)
Bruce and his wife, Kitty, lived in Arkansas a short while,
then in Charlottesville. When I finished school at
Bluefield College and wanted to go to the Univrsity of
Virginia in the fall of 1928, Burce and Kitty took me into
their home for one session. The next session they had
moved out of Charlottesville, and I boarded in town. I
have fond memories of their kindnesses to me while I was a
    student.

    Notes:

Clifton was one of the jokers of the family. He, too, went
away to school when I was quite young. He took his high
school work, a year behind Bruce, at Fork Union Military
Academy. It was here that he was first called "C.J." and
Bruce was called "B.D."-a way to distinguish the two
Reynolds boys. Clifton went to the University of Virginia
where he studied medicine and specialized in Urology. He
married Jane Via, a petite lady from Charlottesville, and
they made their home in Bluefield where Clifton was
affiliated with the Bluefield Sanitarium. He was head of
the Urology Department for a good many years. While there
he helped found a hospital in Richlands, WV and worked
there certain days of the week. When I finished high
school at Renan Clifton and Jane, along with every other
brother and sister of mine, came home for the occasion.
(That was the last time all of us were together.) Daddy
had died in January and Mother couldn't see her way
financially to send me to Westhampton to school. Jane
asked me how I would like to live with them and attend
Bluefield College. I lived two winters with Clifton and
Jane, and they were happy years.

    Notes:

Kate was the sister nearest me in years, although she was
nearly ten years older than I. Kate was pretty and
happy-go-lucky. When I first started to school at Renan, I
walked (or ran) with Kate. She could walk much faster than
I could then~ She married Clack Hubbard when I was not
quite 10 years old, and for awhile they lived on a farm on
the Hubbard place. Later they obtained some of the land
belonging to Daddy and Mother and kept a store at Renan,
having built a nice home and s store on the land. Kate was
a good business woman, doing a professional job of selling
at the store if Clack was busy at other things. She was
    well liked by her customers.

    Notes:

Reuben and I were the last in the family to marry, so he
and I had a few years at home together after the other
siblings had gone. When I was a child, I wanted to be a
boy, and Reuben would help me in this dream by dressing me
in Floyd's clothes. Later in years we would occasionally
go horseback riding or swimming together. In a sense, it
was Reuben who made it possible for me to meet my Sam, and
it was I who made it possible for him to meet his Alice.
One summer day Sam came to my home to play tennis with
Reuben. I had seen Sam twice before - once when he was in
a play at Renan School and once when we both were on a
picnic at Owen's Mill. But this time, after the tennis
game, Sam ate supper at our home. He and Reuben went to
church at Riceville that night. The next day Sam called me
and asked me to go with him to church. My first date! As
for how Reuben met Alice: Alice's sister Mary was my
friend at UVA She invited me to visit her during our
Christmas break, and Reuben took me to her home. There he
met Alice, and within a year, they were married. He
attended Hargrave Military Academy and UVA.

    Notes:

Robert was the kind of person who made friends with almost
anyone with whom he was associated. He saw the humorous
side of life and could tell an anecdote in such a way as to
made his hearers chuckle down deep. He enjoyed playing
jokes on the members of his family, but they were kind
jokes, not mean ones. His daughters get together now and
tell of the funny jokes he would play on them and those who
hear, enjoy the tales. Robert was easy-going. However, he
was a hard worker and I believe a good manager. Beneath
the joking there was a deep seriousness and sincerity and
dependability. He was sympathetic and forgiving - a
lovable person. He bore troubles quietly, and he knew how
to comfort others who were hurting. Robert went to
Hargrave Military Academy (then called Chatham Training
School) and the University of Virginia. He married Rebecca
Davis, a beautiful lady from Riceville Community.

    Notes:

Floyd was my playmate, for he was nearer my age than any of
the other siblings. We played in the sandbox together and
built tree houses together. We built one tree house in the
grove behind our home, a tree house which was higher off
the ground than our two-storey home was high. Of course,
Floyd did most of the work. He found an old telephone and
connected it to the wire to our phone at the home, and the
tree phone worked! When Daddy learned about it, the phone
had to come down from our tree house! It was a good phone!
Floyd and I would "break" a calf so that we could hitch it
to a Floyd-made cart. I loved Floyd dearly and was his
slave - until I wanted to assert my own mind. Floyd went
to Hargrave Military Academy (then C.T.S.) and to Bluefield
College for a while. Later he took training for servicing
dial telephones, a new device in those days.
