    Roll Box: 390, Roll-Exct: 11, Roll-Record: 3882 - Sergeant,
    Company L, 13th Missouri Cavalry

CW muster-in roll lists his POB as Pike Co MO
Family lived in Pike Co MO for less than 1 year about 1835
    per father's pension
file. Possibly born in Missouri. It is difficult to say
just where he might have been born.

During the Civil War his Company F was at the battle of
    Lexington, MO. It is
said that Joe fired the first gun at the battle, but his
    company was surrounded
by Price's Army & caused to surrender. His war record
    reads as follows: "It
is hereby certified that according to the records of this
    office, active
service 30 July 1862 in Company F, 26th enrolled Missouri
    Militia at Bolivar,
Missouri. Capt. T. Higginbotham commanding, Rank 2nd
    Lieutenant. Relieved
from duty 20 October 1862 as Prisoner of War. Enlisted 10
    Aug 1864 in Co L
15th Regiment Cavalry Volunteers at Bolivar, MO by Capt.
    Burus. Rank: Pvt.
Mustered into service 26 Aug 1864 at Springfield, MO.
    Mustered out of
service 1 July 1865 at Springfield, MO."

After the close of the Civil War, Joe engaged in stock
raising and farming in Missouri. In Morrow County Oregon
    engaged in sheep raising.

In 1884, after the death of his first wife & his remarriage
    to Bell Wall in
1882, he moved with his sons & daughters to Oregon. The
    various families
settled in Morrow County then a part of Umatilla County.
    After Joe's death of
pneumonia, Bell Devin married a Lalande & their two
    children, Stella Ophelia &
    James Benton Devin..

Per the will of their stepfather: his children by Belle
    Wall apparently kept
the Devin name; they were left $250 each in his will. --KLV

Per KLV, Joe died without a will and it took at least two
years to settle the estate. Probate file lists YOD as 1886.

!NAME:Obituary for Alfred Harrison Devin, Devin, Alfred
    Harrison: obituary,

    A. H. Devin

    A. H. Devin the subject of this

sketch was born Sept. 29, 1840 in

    Polk County about three miles

northwest of Bolivar. Died at his

home in Dunnegan Jan. 27, 1914

    at 4:12 p.m. aged 73 years, 3

months and 27 days. He profess-

ed faith in Christ about 35 years

ago and united with the Cumber-

    land Presbyterian church. He

lived a devoted Christian life, be-

ing true and loyal to his church.

He died in the triumphs of a

    living faith in Christ.

    He married Miss Mary Camp-

bell on Jan.29th 1861. If he had

lived two more days they would

have been married 53 years. To

this union were born five children

four of whom are living. Their

    names are Mrs. Margaret Holmes,

Flora Organ, G. A. Devin of

Dunnegan, Mo, C. S. Devin who

died about 20 years ago, Mrs.

    Sarah A. Ayres of Humansville,

Mo, and Mrs. Mineva E. Ham-

mons of Dunnegan, Mo. He was

one of the oldest and most respect-

    ed citizens of this county.

He had been in the merchandise

    business at Dunnegan about 25

Years and was able to take care of

his store all this time until two

weeks before he died. He was

    taken with lagrippe about three

Weeks ago on the night of Jan. 20

    at 11 o’clock, had a paralytic

stroke after which he lived 8 days

never being able to speak but was

sensible to every thing that was

said in his hearing and recognize-

ing every one who came to see

    him until the last.

    Politically he was a democrat.

had helped to assess this county

ten times, taught school a number

of years before, during and after

the civil war. A number of menu

and women can call to mind their

school days when he was their

    teacher. He had been Notary

Public for 30 years, his work and

advice will be greatly missed for

he never advised any one to do

anything wrong or that would get

    them in trouble.

He was devoted to his family

and ever looking after their in-

terest. For many years yet to

come his good works will follow

after him and be remembered by

    many people.

    Funeral services were held at

the C. P. church Wednesday at

2 p.m. by the pastor Rev. Baker

after which the remains were laid

to rest in the Dunnegan cemetery

    to await the resurrection morn.

”Blessed are they who die in the

Lord and their works do follow

    them.”
