I have come to the conclusion that the Residents of Pittsylvania Co., VA 1860 compiled by Mike K. Williams (1996) is incorrect in stating in a note after the following entry that Nancy is Nancy Shelhorse, daughter of Barnet Shelhorse:

James Hall, 56m, farmer, $700; Nancy, 54f; George, 10m; Nancy 8f. (NOTE: married 10/29/1846 Nancy Shelhorse d/o Barnet)

The reasons for my conclusion follow.

My ancestor, Nancy Elizabeth "Betty" Hall, married David Andrew Marlow. She was the daughter of James and Nancy Hall.
      -From the Marlow Family Bible:
Nancy E. Hall was born Oct 10th 1851.
Died July 28.1921 Making her stay on earth nearly 70
      yrs.
      -From headstone:
      Nancy Hall Marlow
      Oct. 10, 1851
      July 28, 1921

      -according to the 1860 census:
James Hall would have been born in ~1804.
Nancy, his wife, would have been born in ~1806.
George, his son , would have been born in ~1850.
Nancy, his daughter, would have been born in ~1852.
Since the census was probably taken earlier in the year and Nancy's birthday was in Oct., I assume that this is "my" Nancy.

-a query placed on the Pitts.Co., VA genweb site in the early part of 1998 states:
James Hall m. (12/27/1848) Nancy Herndon
This date would "fit" with the date of birth for George assuming that he was probably their first child.

-Nancy Shelhorse (25 Apr 1827) m.(10/29/1846) James M. Hall. bondsman William H. Shelhorse signed by Mary and Nancy Shelhorse.

      -Deaths in Pittsylvania Co:
1854---Martha Hall, died Aug, Chatham, typhoid fever, 8 yrs., parents: Jas.M. and Nancy Hall, born Pitts.Co., VA, reported by father.
1855---Lydia Hall, bronchetas, 63 yrs., born and died Pitts. Co., VA, husband George Hall, reported by son George W. Hall.

-The following info. was sent to me by a man researching a different branch of the Hall family. From the names, dates and ages given, this would appear to be the family of Nancy Shelhorse who married James M. Hall. Their daughter, Martha, appears on the census (see her death above) and the age given for Nancy would match up with the birthdate of Nancy Shelhorse (1827).

The following is from the 1850 federal census of Pittsylvania County, VA.

      Northern District, dwelling #605

G.W. Hall, age 34, farmer. He is shown as a widower, with 3 children, and with his widowed mother Lydia, age 55, also in his household. (Note: Lydia Taylor, daughter of Obediah Taylor, married 14 Nov 1810 in Pittsylvania County, VA
to George Hall, who apparently died pre-1850. I don't know the identity of this George Hall. I see that on 15 July 1822 he and Lydia and other people were involved in a land sale in Pittsylvania Co., VA., per a Xerox copy of the index
to Hall grantor deeds I have from that county. That deed just might have helpful information if you get a copy of it. It is in Pittsylvania County, VA, Deed Book 24, starting on page 556.

      next dwelling: #606

James M. Hall, age 25, blacksmith; wife Nancy, age 23, and daughter Martha, age 3. (Note: Mike Williams' annotated publication on Pittsylvania Co., VA marriages for the period 1831-1861 says that: James M. Hall married 29 Oct 1846 in Pittsylvania County, VA to Nancy Shelhorse, a daughter of Barnett Shelhorse who was deceased in 1846.)

      next dwelling: #607

Daniel D. Hall, age 23, his wife and a child. (Note: Daniel was also a son of Lydia and George Hall.)

I would speculate that James M. Hall who married Nancy Shelhorse was another son of Lydia Taylor and George Hall because of his residence in 1850.
