MOORE WILLIAM PERRY MOORE She was granddaughter to WILLIAM B. MOORE ELIZABETH STEELE MOORE WILLIAM GEORGE CARTER UNITY BATES CARTER Sarah C. Moore was born November 22, 1823 in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky to John Steele Moore and Susanna Carter Moore daughter of William George Carter and Unity Bates Carter. Her father, John Steele Moore, was the son of William B. Moore and Elizabeth Steel Moore of Washington County. Virginia. John Steele Moore came to Monticello with a vision and soon after its charter in 1801 he owned lots 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, and 16 of the original plat. From his mercantile business John S. Moore & Company, he amassed great wealth from transporting dry goods from Virginia to the pioneer territory of Wayne County, Kentucky. Sarah's life of luxury was short lived. John Steele Moore died in 1830 and the settlement of his estate set forth a rocky existence for the seven year old still living at home. Her mother utilized Sarah's portion of the Estate to subsidize the Dower's Share. A step father entered the picture in 1832 and lawsuits over her father's estate going to the Supreme Court soon ate up the family fortune. From the misfortune, Sarah would meet her future husband. Sarah's mother let rooms to Marshal Hutson, M.D. and Walter E. Hall, M.D. and subsequently medical students began to board with the Moores. Sarah's sister Evaline married Jeremiah Stanton Pierce, M.D. in October of 1832 and in 1845 Sarah married John C. Craig, M.D. As Mrs. John C. Craig, Sarah was able to live the life intended for her. Craig was a famed physician and surgeon and was widely traveled. He and his brother Thomas, also a physician brought many medical students from Jefferson Medical College in Louisville for residency under the doctors Craig in Stanford. As did her mother, Sarah's home was open to these medical students; but also like her mother, Sarah's marriage was cut short with the premature death of her husband John in June of 1865. (Sarah was 41). In 1868, Samuel Pierce, son of John & Sarah Craig, completed his medical training and returned to Stanford to take over the practice left by his father. In the 1870 census Samuel Pierce Craig, MD was living at home with his mother as was John's brother, Captain Richard Gaines Craig who was also living with the Craigs in the 1850 census. With the support of these extended family members, Sarah was able to fair as a widow much better than her mother John and Sarah Moore Craig were the parents of six children: Samuel Pierce Craig, John Moore Craig who died at age 13, Susan Evaline Craig, Anna B. Craig, James Thompson Craig and Richard C. Craig who died at age 9. She lived as widow and mother for seven years, dying in February of 1872 at age 49. November 22, 1823 - February 12, 1872 Died at her residence in this place on 12 February last, Mrs. Sarah C., consort of the late Dr. John Craig, deceased, in the 46 year of her age, after a long and painful illness of pulmonary consumption. She leaves a family of five children, two girls and three boys. She had been, ______ many years, a member of the Christian Church, and died in the full hope of a blessed immortality. Through all her sufferings, she was uncomplaining, and bore them with that courage and fortitude which a hope in Christ can create. The orphans left behind have the sweet consolation that their mother who loved them so tenderly in life, is now a saint in glory. Her funeral was preached at her home, on the evening following, by her beloved pastor Rev. W. L. Williams, of Hustonville, from the text found in the 14th Chapter of Mathew and 12th verse. A large concourse of friends followed her remains to our cemetery, where they were lain beside her husband. [Buried in Buffalo Springs Cemetery, Sect 3]
