WILLIAM PATTERSON (JAMES) was born 14 March 1732/33 in Drumore (Little Britain Twnshp), Lancaster Co, PA, and died 29 June 1818 in Cross Creek Twnship, Washington Co, PA. He married (1) ROSANNA SCOTT 16 March 1758 in Blue Ball Tavern, Cecil, MD1. She was born Abt. 1738 in Cecil Co, MD2, and died 05 April 1769 in Little Britain Twnshp, Lancaster Co, PA. He married (2) ELIZABETH BROWN 10 April 1770 in Lancaster Co, PA. She was born 16 March 1746/47 in Colrain Twnshp, Lancaseter Co, PA, and died 30 January 1826 in Cross Creek Twnship, Washington Co, PA.
Notes for WILLIAM PATTERSON:
From "The Patterson & Pattison Family Association, Book 1", 1963, Local History microfiche G-1641 v.1: He settled in Washington County, PA in 1778/79, in Cross Creek Township. He was among the earlier settlers in that part of the state. The Indians made frequent incursions into that neighborhood from Ohio, until Wayne defeated them and destroyed their homes. On those occasions when the alarm was given, the settlers fled to a place of safety or refuge called "blockhouses" in which they were often beseiged and vigorously assaulted, compelled, in some instances, to succomb to the rife, tomahawk, and scalping knife of their murderous assailants. It occasionally happened, however, that a part of, or perhaps a whole family, would fail to reach these places of security, until overtaken by their enemies, and were either taken prisoners or pitiously slain. This neighbor-hood, in fact, experienced all the horrors and hardships of border warfare with the Indians, and the Pattersons were not excepted from participation in either the horrors or the hardships.
This family has always been a prominent one in that part of the State. Sons Thomas and John were in Congress during the contest between Jackson, Adams, and Crawford for the Presidency. Three of Thomas' sons served in the State Legislature, two of them having been elevated to the Speakership of the House of Representatives.
