Middlesex County Arms: Or, a bordure engralled azure on a chief sable three escallops argent. Crest: A pair of wings addorsed or. The Rev. Charles Grymes of Gloucester and York counties, had a son, John, who married Alice, d/o Lawrence and Sarah Townley. The latter was a d/o Col. Augustine Warner, Sr. of 'Warner Hall.' John Grymes died 28 Aug 1709, aged 69 years. His eldest son, Hon. John Grymes of 'Brandon,' Middlesex, was born in 1693, died 2 Nov 1749. He was Burgess for Middlesex 1718, Auditor-General 1716, and member of the Council in 1725. He married Lucy, d/o Phillip Ludwell of Greensprings. Frequent mention of the Grymes family is contained in the Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex. The will of John Grymes, 2nd dated 1747, bears a wax seal with the above arms. According to Burke, these are the arms of Grimes of Bonchurch, Isle of Wight, England. Notes for John Grymes: John Grymes, son of John Grymes and Alice Townley, born 1691, and was the chief heir and executor of his mother's last will and testament dated 1 January 1709-1710, probated 1 Mary 1710 per The Townleys and Warners of Virginia and Their English Connections by Mary Burton Derrickson McCurdy, published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume V, page 571; John Grymes of "Brandon", Middlesex County, Virginia, was born in 1691, probably in Gloucester County, Virginia and died 2 November 1748. He bought the "Brandon" estate in Middlesex from the heirs of Major General Robert Smith and it was for several generations, the estate of the eldest branch of the family. There was formerly a large brick mansion at Brandon which has not entirely disappeared. John Grymes was a member of the House of Burgesses for Middlesex County, Virginia, at the sessions of April 1718, November 1720 and May 1722, and was appointed to the Council in 1725. He was Auditor General of the Colony i 1718; but seems to have held that office only a short time and was Receiver General from 1723 to his death in 1748.
