For many years I have noticed that Dickie researchers dating back to 1900 have routinely accepted the notion that John Dickie of Halifax County, VA (ca 1720-1785)had but one wife named 'Sarah Alsie' or Alsie and that she was the mother of all of his children. I knew this was incorrect and recently submitted my findings and rationale to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. DAR concurred with my findings and has so noted this on all previous applications. By sharing my findings with Dickie researchers on this forum,I hope to correct a long standing error that claims Mr. Dickie had only one wife when, in fact, he had two.

Mr. Dickie, who is believed to have been born about 1720 in either Scotland or Virginia, married Sarah Watkins prior to 1750 when their first child was born. Sarah Watkins was the youngest of at least nine children born to John Watkins and Elizabeth Parker who were married in 1707 in Essex Co., VA. Elizabeth Parker Watkins, daughter of Robert Parker of Essex Co., gave birth to her children between 1707/8 and 1726.

In the book, "Marriages of Some Virginia Residents," John Watkins?s daughter, Sarah is reported to have married a Dickie. Unfortunately, Dickie?s first name was not transcribed, but that her husband was the John Dickie in question is supported later when John Watkins in his 1763 will, listed his children including daughter Sarah Dickie. When John Watkins? wife, Elizabeth, died in Halifax Co., VA prior to 18 March 1784, John Dickie Sr. was one of three men who inventoried and appraised her personal estate.

John and Sarah Dickie had five children born between 1750 and 1768. These included John Dickie Jr. born 1750, Susannah Dickie born 1755, Sarah born 1760, Elizabeth Dickie born 1765,and William who was still a minor in school 1787. Sometime after the birth of their last child and before 1784, first wife Sarah Dickie died because Mr. Dickie married for a second time on 14 May/24 July 1784.

The new wife was Alice/Alisey Townes, daughter of William Townes of Halifax Co. Alice was born about 1764 in Halifax.Co.A year after they were married, Mr. Dickie and his young wife welcomed a baby daughter, Nancy, into the world.

At about the same time Nancy was born, Mr. Dickie died intestate in June 1785 in Halifax Co.His young widow, Alice Townes Dickie, married John Terry Colquitt on 20 July 1786. John Terry Colquitt, born 6 Aug 1757 in Halifax Co., was the son of Anthony Colquitt and Christian Terry. In the estate inventory prepared by Mr. Dickie?s eldest son, John Dickie Jr., all of his father?s children are named including the baby Nancy.John Dickie Jr. became guardian for the minor son William, Mr. Dickie?s youngest child by Sarah Watkins, while John Terry Colquitt, the young widow?s new husband, was named guardian for Alsey and Mr. Dickie?s daughter, Nancy.

By most written accounts, Sarah Watkins is estimated to have been born abt 1726, and married about 1748 or 1749. Her last child, William, was born between 1768 and 1770 as he was a minor and in need of a guardian when his father died in 1786. Assuming for the sake of argument Sarah didn?t die but lived to have another child by John Dickie in 1785, she would have been at least 59 years old when Nancy Dickie was born.Alice Colquitt later gave birth to at least two or three other children by John Colquitt. Assuming that Sarah and Aisley were one person, how does one explain the well documented marriage in 1785 of Mr. John Dickie to Alice Townes. And, how could Alice/Aisely, reportedly born abt 1764, have given birth to the Dickie children between 1750 and 1765.

Yes, there was another John Dickie in Halifax County at that time. He was John Jr., son of Mr. Dickie, and was married first to Martha Watkins by whom he had four children, then to Patsey Vaughan on 3 April 1788.John Jr. died 7 Oct 1813.

Only in reports written by later day researchers does one see the two given names of the Mrs. Dickies combined and referring to one person. In all records found for either woman, they are identified with the given name Sarah or Alice (Aisley). Never are both names used together.

Written accounts published as early as 1900,state that Mr. Dickie?s wife was named either ?Sarah Ailsey? or just ?Ailsey.? There are many spellings given Ailsey, but more than likely her birth name was Alice and John Dickie being a Scotsman either by birth or heritage, probably nicknamed her the Scottish equivalent.

As further evidence that Nancy was the daughter of Alice Townes Dickie, it is interesting to note that Nancy, who was married 13 Dec 1803 in Oglethorpe Co., GA to Cuthbert Collier produced two sons and named them Dickey Washington Collier and Marlin Townes Collier. Nancy died prior to 1816 when her husband remarried.

I hope that my outline of events, dates and names supported by the footnotes that will lead researchers to the supporting documents, demonstrate that Alice/Ailsey was the second Mrs. Dickie and mother of Nancy Dickie, but not of John Dickie?s first five children. It is time for Sarah Watkins Dickie to receive the credit she is due as John Dickie?s first wife and mother of his older children. I also noticed that Alice, as wife of Patriot John Terry Colquitt, is given the maiden name of Dickie in earlier DAR applications. Her maiden name was Townes, and she deserves to be identified as a Townes and the second wife of John Dickie.
