      Harold Oakes, 77, of 251 Figsboro Road, Martinsville, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at his home.
      He was born Jan. 1, 1929, in Franklin County to Eugene Fletcher Oakes and Frances Martin Oakes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Slaughter; a son, Jerome Oakes; and a brother, Joe Oakes.
      He was employed as a mechanic with Mitchell Howell Ford for 36 years. He was an Army veteran and served in Korea. He was a member of Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren.
      Surviving are his wife, Bernice Oakes of the home; a daughter, Annette Gardner and a son, Timothy Oakes; both of Snow Creek; a sister, Hillie Mae Stanley of Rocky Mount; and four granddaughters.
      The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren in Snow Creek with the Rev. Mike Gallimore officiating. Burial will be in the Oakes family cemetery.
