      Enlisted on 5/11/1861 in Richmond, he was mustered into Captain Marye's Company, "Hampden" Virginia Light Artillery as a Private. (Captain Marye was a fellow Fredericksburger.)
      On 7/24/1861 he was transferred into Captain Carter Braxton's Company, "Fredericksburg" Virginia Light Artillery. He reported for duty 7/30/1861.
      Reenlisted for 2 more years' service on 2/25/1862; $50 Reenlistment Bounty due.
      He was transferred on 4/6/1862 back into the Hampden Virginia Light Artillery.
      Appears back in the Fredericksburg Light Artillery on the June 30 - Oct 31, 1862 Roll.
      Listed as AWOL on Nov & Dec 1862 Roll.
      Present or accounted for on all subsequent Rolls until Absent, sick on Jan & Feb 1864 Roll.

      The Fredericksburg Light Artillery was organized in June, 1861, with men recruited in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After serving in the Aquia District, it was assigned to R.L. Walker's, W.J. Pegram's, and M. Johnson's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. The unit saw action from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, was involved in the operations against Petersburg and Richmond, then took part in the Appomattox Campaign.
