Sarah C. Moore was born November 22, 1823 in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky to John Steele Moore and Susanna Carter Moore daughter of William George Carter and Unity Bates Carter.
Her father, John Steele Moore, was the son of William B. Moore and Elizabeth Steel Moore of Washington County. Virginia. John Steele Moore came to Monticello with a vision and soon after its charter in 1801 he owned lots 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, and 16 of the original plat. From his mercantile business John S. Moore & Company, he amassed great wealth from transporting dry goods from Virginia to the pioneer territory of Wayne County, Kentucky.
