Giles Carter
Birth: Nov. 25, 1821
Darlington County, South Carolina
Death: Aug. 16, 1885
Darlington County, South Carolina
Giles was a son of Charles Powell Carter, Jr., and brother of Col. William Ingram Carter, John Morgan Carter, Sidney Carter, and a couple of others. He was likely named for his uncle, Giles Carter, a brother of his father.
Giles served the Confederacy during the War Between the States in Company A, 14th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, Confederate States of A merica. Before the war broke out, Giles' family controlled a militia group known as the "Lynches Creek Guard" which later evolved into Company A.
Giles was a son of the former Susan Ingram. Susan apparently died, and his father remarried to Giles' formerly married aunt, a sister of his mother, Martha Serena Ingram Ward.
Giles Carter was born and died in Carterville, once located in Darlingt on County, South Carolina, and now in Florence County. The defunct town i n now just a crossroads, known to some as Carter's Crossroads, not to b e confused with Carter's Crossing which is not too far away in the curr ent Darlington County.
