Recently on the Vaughan Pioneers group, we've been trying to find if John Vaughan, born about 1762 somewhere in VA and maried to Nancy Callicott could have been a son of James Vaughan of Amelia County, VA. Here is the data we have on this family (the Amelia side). The line starts with a Nicholas Vaughan, son of a William Vaughan, the data in red is the branch that we are wondering if it could be John Vaughan's father and mother:

NICHOLAS VAUGHAN - son of William Vaughan (1625- ca.1693) of Charles City County, Virginia

He also owned land on the north side of Hatcher's Run (west of Petersburg, in present Dinwiddie County, VA). His children inherited and divided the land.

    Nottoway counties.
    Known Children:

    IV. THOMAS VAUGHAN
Born: bef. 1720, Prince George County, VA
    Died: 1751, Amelia County
    Married: Elizabeth [died aft. 1751]
Had 400 acres on both sides of Franks Creek of Flatt Creek, Amelia County, VA.
    Children:
    1) Thomas Vaughan, Jr. - b. 12 July 1742; married Mary; moved to Caswell County, North Carolina

Born: 3 March 1721/22, Prince George County, VA
Robert Hicks appointed guardian of the minor child Abraham on 9 Dec 1738, after the death of his father, Nicholas. Question: Was Robert Hicks a relative, perhaps uncle?

    VII. ELIZA VAUGHAN
Born: 18 April 1727, Prince George County, VA

    VIII. NICHOLAS VAUGHAN, JR.
Born: 20 Feb 1728/29, Prince George County, VA
Question: Was he the Nicholas who moved to South Carolina?

The other questions in this data are from Beverly Neises, my fellow researcher. John Vaughan and Nancy Callicott tie into the William and Fereby Vaughan line through intermarriage. John and Nancy's oldest child was named James, and if you'll notice in the above data, 4.) James had a son named James Jr., who lived in Hawkins County, TN, where John and Nancy lived later in life (now it's Hancock County, TN). The Callicotts were living close to the Nicholas Vaughan family in VA. Following this theory, John Vaughan whould probably not have been a brother to William Vaughan. Maybe a cousin, but I suspect the relationship to William (the one who married Fereby Benton) was a 2nd or third cousin, or perhaps none at all, just the same name. Since we've had little luck with William Vaughan, maybe we can pin down John Vaughan.

    David & Laura -

Thank you for your e-mail. As you know, I too am trying to research the Pollards of Amelia County, Virginia. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make any real connections to date. Here is what I have. I hope it rings
    some bells with you.

Oney Pollard (1790 - between 1853 and 1860) married John Carter in Amelia in 1821. I am beginning to believe that Oney was either born Oney Chapman and married a Pollard and then married John Carter, or she was born Oney Pollard, married a Chpman and then married John Carter.
Mary Elizabeth Pollard (1829 - 1878) was the daughter of Nancy (maiden name thought to be Foster). Her father is unknown. Mary married William R. Carter (the son of John Carter, above) in Amelia in 1846. Nancy had to give
her permission to the marriage, due to Mary's age. (Note: her father did not give the permission, which leads me to believe that he was already dead.) They made their home at a plantation known as Mulberry Grove on Stocks Creek, near Paineville and the Cumberland Co. border. Mary was left
a very large piece of land by Joseph Haskew, the county attorney, who was married to a Miss Foster. William R. Carter had many dealings with a William H. Pollard. (One of William Pollard's day books was later taken over by William Carter to keep track of his own transactions and the book
is in the possession of my cousin in Richmond, VA.) I suspect that William H. Pollard was Mary Elizabeth's brother. I found a will for a William H. Pollard in Amelia, but I cannot be sure it is the one I am seeking.

    February Court 1863
    Wm. H. Pollard's Will

I William H. Pollard of the County of Amelia do make and declare this as and for my last will and testament as follows to wit.
1st. I desire all my just debts paid.

the sum of Four Hundred dollars annually for the sole + exclusive use of my said daughter free from the debt or contract of her present or any future husband, and should my said daughter die leaving children during the life
or widowhood of my wife, then the said sum of $400 annually is to be paid equally to and among the children of my said daughter for their education and support.
3rd. At the death or marriage of my wife I devise[&] bequeath all my estate of every kind and description to my daughter Isabella, and during her life for her sole and exclusive use, free from the debts or contracts of any
husband she may marry, and at her death to be equally divided among her children living at her death + the issue of any of her children who may have died leaving issue alive at her death. Such issue to take the share which the deceased parent or parents would have taken if alive. But should the said Isabella die without issue of her body living at her death, then I devise and bequeath all the estate given her by this item of my will to my daughter Sarah during her life, for her sole + exclusive use free from the debts + contracts of her present or any future husband, and at her death to be equally divided among her children living at her death + the issue of such as may have died leaving issue alive at her death, such issue to take the share of their deceased parent or parents.
4th. At the death or marriage of my wife I give to my daughter Sarah for her life for her sole + exclusive use free from the debts or contract of her present or any future husband the sum of Ten Thousand dollars the payment of which I charge upon the property devised and bequeathed to my daughter Isabella by the 3rd item of this my will and which sum so to be paid by my daughter Isabella out of the property given to her. I wish safely loaned out or invested in property and the annual interest or profits only to be paid to my daughter for her sole + exclusive use as aforesaid during her life and at her death I give the said sum of $10,000 to be equally divided among the children of my daughter Sarah living at her death and the issue of such as may have died leaving issue alive at her death such issues to take the share of their deceased parent or parents. But should the said Sarah die without issue of her body living at her death then the said sum of $10,000 to revert to my daughter Isabella + pass in all respects as if the said sum constituted part of the estate given her by
the 3rd Item of my will.
I hereby constitute and appoint my wife executrix of this my last will hereby expressly revoking all wills by me heretofore made + I request that she shall be permitted to qualify as Executrix without giving security. But upon her marriage her powers are to cease and upon the death or marriage of my wife I [?] {appoint} H. Barnes Executor of this my will. In witness whereof I have hereto subscribed my name this 8th day of January 1863.
    Wm. H. Pollard
