    Joseph Alpha Carter's eldest daughter, Thelma delivered her
    first child, September 2, 1930, a month after he died. The
    10 lb little girl died at birth. Thelma, a gifted
    seamstress had her dressed in a christening dress she had
    made; held her daughter and said, "daddy wanted to see you".

    Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr. was a salesman and then a manager
    of Cobb & Crew, Co. Inc. He lived with his family at 672
    Jefferson Avenue Danville, Va. from about 1918-1919 until
    his death in 1930, after which his family there resided
    until 1965-1966 when his widow, Mattie Edwards was
    incapacitated.

    William Carter is the father of George Turner Carter. George Turner Carter named his first child William Green. William, for his father, and Green, for his wife's maiden name.
    1900 Census shows George T.'s Birth as Nov 1850. The 1880 VA Halifax Census shows William Carter 72, and Elizabeth, his wife, 66 living in HH/Fam 30/33 next door to his son George Carter, 25 Martha (Sue Green) 25, with children, Wm.(William Green)7, Joseph (Joseph Alpha) 5, James 4, Martha (Mattie Carter Powell) 2, and baby George is 10 months old.

    This tidbit of information explains why the wife of Joseph A. Carter, their 2nd child, knew his Mother as Martha GRAVITT, as George was also known as George T. Gravitt. His wife, Martha Susan complete name is Martha Susan Gravitt GREEN. She is the d/o Susan H. Gravitt and Wm. Nathaniel GREEN.

    George married Martha Susan Gravitt 'Susie/Sue' Green 10 Jan 1872, Halifax County, Va., Mt. Carmel District. Martha (daughter of William N. [Nathaniel] Green and Susan [Hunt] Gravitt) was born 18 Feb 1855, Halifax County, Virginia; died 7 Mar 1886, Halifax County, Virginia. [Group Sheet]

    Susie Green marries George T. Carter about 1872; they have
    8 children, 4 of which die in infancy, and he marries Sally Fanny [Sarah Frances] Green around 1887.

    George T. Carter had two wives. Susie Gravitt is found on the death certificate as the mother of Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr.. Both George and Susie are listed as having been from Halifax County, Virginia. Later investigation shows the marriage record as Martha S. Green. An 1890 document shows George T. Carter AlIAS 'Gravitt' is the explanation of my grandmother's recollection. His second wife, Sallie Fanny Green is the sister of his first wife. In 1924 she inherits money from her uncle, John King Gravitt and the 3 of the 4 children of Geo. T. Carter and Sue Green are listed as heirs in this will, as well. By 1930 George T. Carter is listed as widower on the census.


    Died:
    Martha Susan Green is shown on the 1880 Census in the HH of her husband, George Turner Carter, and living adjacent to the HH of George's Parents, William & Betsy Turner Carter. It is the last time her name will appear on the Federal Census. By 1887 George has remarried, Sally Fannie Green, Susie's Sister. Bible Records for this family show the exact death date of Susan Carter, however, no death record can be located by the State of Virginia.

    Addison L. Edwards was born on October 27, 1845. He enlisted, date unknown, as Pvt., Co. K, 14th Virginia Infantry. Addison was captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and held as a prisoner of war at Fort McHenry, Ft. Delaware, and Point Lookout, Maryland. He was apparently exchanged as he rejoined his company until December 7, 1863. Addison was captured again at Five Forks on April 1, 1865. He was held as a priosner of war at City Point (Hopewell, Virginia) until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland where he took the Oath of Allegiance and was released on June 11, 1865.
