    Richard Cole Jr. purchased the Tavern called Lee's Tavern, 12 Dec 1812 and renamed the Tavern, Blackhorse Inn. He was probably born in Culpepper Co., VA where his relatives are found.

    While nothing is known about Richard Cole's education, it is recorded in Dorman (Orange County Will Book #2 (1744-1778) that Richard Cole, schoolmaster, was paid for the schooling of the orphans of John Plunkett, deceased.

    July the Three and Twentieth, 1652, Yorke in Virginia. "For the sume of 60 pds sterl. my plantation on South of Potomac River 1050 acres by patent 18 Oct., 1650", Wm Gooch sells to Mr Richard Cole. Witnesses: Wm Durand, Thomas Durand (his mark). Ack. by Mr Wm Gooch 23 Aug, 1652.

    It is likely that these Coles in Augusta Co. are related to the York Co. Coles of the 1650's.

    Individuals surrounding the hh of John Cole, father of Martha Reynolds are a family of Morgans. John Morgan is named as son-in-law, along with William Reynolds, whose wife is Martha Cole. William Green, John Green and Wm. W. Morgan, and Charles Mogrgan signed Witnesses to this will which was proved 17 Mar 1757 in Culpepper.

    William Beesly his Depo. William Beesly aged 22 yeares or thereabouts being sworne and examined saith That he this Depont came into this Colony of Virginia in the ship called the Honor in wch ship came one Vincent Cox servant
    to Mr Bullocke and the said ship came to anchor in Virgnia about the 8th or the 10th day of October last was fower
    yeares and further this Depont saith not. William Beesly his marke.
    The court then summarized William?s testimony on 20 February 1653[/4]:
    Whereas it doth appeare unto ye Court by ye Depostion of Wm: Beesley and John Draper that Vincent Cox came into this Country ye 10th day of Octo: last was fower yeares and tht ye saide Cox was solde or assigned by John Pettitt to
    Mr. Richard Cole for ye serving him, the saide Cole ye remaindr: of fower yeares as by ye saide Assignemt may more
    at large apeare wch: said line of service ye Court doth declare that ye said Cox hath served according to ye last assignemt. The Court doth ordr: that hee ye saide Cox shal be free from ye saide Cole his service and that ye saide Mr. Cole shal pay all charges of Court.
