Halifax Co., VA, Will Bk 3, p. 96, Will of Michael Turpin of H, very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind,

To my wife Edith--all my stock and my household furniture and the land which lies the other side of the creek, during her natural life, and then to descend to my sons John and James. I also give my wife the mill and half the profit (the other half to son Obediah Turpin).

To my son Obediah Turpin--the remainder of the land. If the rent of the land does not pay for the land at the end of 4 years, then each of the boys before mentioned to pay equally what is due.

Executors: sons Obediah, John and James.
Signed--Michael (+his mark) Turpin. Wit--Allen Whitehead, Benjamin Clements, Josiah (+his mark) Shelton. The will of Michael Turpin dec'd was OR at H Court of Jan. 27, 1794.

Proof that Michael was also known as Miles:
Halifax Co., VA, Deed Bk 16, p. 713, Sep 26, 1796 from John Turpin of H, to James Powell of H, for 75 lbs, all that tract of land left him by his decd father's will, on Sandy Cr & Banister [River], which said land is now in the actual possession of his mother, [Edith] Turpin, and so to remain during her natural life, as will appear by the will of her decd husband, Miles Turpin. But after the death of the sd Edith, sd land to belong to me. I therefore sell all my right to the land willed to me by Miles Turpin my decd father, to James Powell. Signed John Turpin. Wit: none. James Turpin
    Sex: M
    Death: AFT 1812
This James Turpin disappeared from the Halifax Co., VA, tax lists in 1812. He and John Turpin who m. Elizabeth Carter were the only male Turpins in Halifax Co. around the time George Turpin was born. It is possible George was a son of James & Polly Smith Turpin and I am placing him with this couple as a place marker. There is little evidence of James Turpin's presence in VA and I believe that is why most researchers placed George with John. It is possible that George was John's nephew. Research continues.

Halifax Co., VA, Deed Bk 16, p. 632, Jun 24, 1796 from James Tirpin [Turpin] to Robert D. Milner, both of H, for 10 lbs 10 shillings, about 7 acres in H on Sandy Cr near the Mouth, and bounded by James Powell's gate on the New Sandy Creek Rd, sd Robert D. Milner, sd Powel's Tobacco ground below sd Powels Spring. Signed--James Tirpin. Wit: J. Eastham, Reuben Smith [brother-in-law of James Turpin], Benjamin Clements, Elisha (x his mark) Towlin. Recorded Jun 27, 1796.

    p. 633, Aug 24, 1794 from Robert D. Milner of H, to Frederick Farmer of H, for 35 lbs 5 shillings, about 31 acres in H on the hills of Sandy Cr. Signed--Robert D. Milner. Wit: James Eastham, David Farmer, John Tirpin. Recorded Jun 27, 1796.

    Birth: ABT 1796 in VA
Death: ABT 1866 in Pittsylvania Co., VA
Note: It remains unknown exactly who George's parents were. Some researchers place him with John & Elizabeth Carter Turpin. It is possible, however, that he was a son of James Turpin who m. Mary "Polly" Smith. Both John and James were the only male Turpins enumerated in Halifax Co.'s tithe lists during the years George was likely born. They were both sons of Michael & Edith Turpin. Michael Turpin died about 1794 and Edith was tithed a year or so after that. This James Turpin disappeared from the tithe lists about 1812. George Turpin was first tithed in 1818.
