Pittsylvania County Clerks Office, Mary Bigger by her Letter filed relinquishes her right to the administration of the estate of her late Husband James Bigger deceased, to Robert Devin, who took the oath by Law, required and together with Arron Hutchings his Security, entered into and acknowleged their bonds in the penalty of fifteen Hundred Dollars, Conditioned as the Law directs, Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of administration on the said Decedants estate in due form. Ordered that Jonathan Thomas, William Elliot Senr. [Greg] Thomas and Edward [Long][bush] or any three of them being first Sworn as the Law Directs do appraise in Current money the personal estate of James Bigger Deceased and reprt thereof to the Court

Named in her Father's Will. Susannah Elizabeth. There is also another child named Elizabeth. So Susannah was probably called Susan.

Notes:

William Devin, Senior is considered to be the Progenitor of the protestant Devin family in the United States of America. William Devin, Senior of Virginia was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to America in 1745 or 1746. In 1750, he married Sarah Smith and settled in what is now Pittsylvania County, Virginia. --The Devin Family, page 1.

William Davin along with son James Davin is listed in the
1767 list of Tithables for Pittsylvania County, Virginia
Colony. As did many landowners of the era and region, William Devin Senior owned slaves. His will states that he owned at least one male slave, named Alleck, which he bequeathed to his daughter Sarah Devin.

William Sr. served as Sergeant of Infantry, Virginia Continental Line. He "received a certificate for balance of full pay, according to act passed November session 1781". [more likely this was his son William Jr.] Children listed in will: James Devin, Mary Biggar, William Devin, Jr.

Smith surname assumed based on serveral grandchildren named
'Sarah Smith _____'. No documents have been found to
support her last name except for a manuscript by Dessa
Hoffstetter. However, its source is suspect.

Not named in will of her husband which was dated 25
November 1800.
Dessa's booklet mentions a letter to Alfred Harrison Devin
written by Rev. Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of
William Jr, son of William Sr. The letter is said to make
the following statements: "Records of the Parish of Camden:
'Sarah Devin born March 20, 1728.'"

After Sarah and William were married, they settled in the area now known as Pittsylvania County, Virginia. William and Sarah were members of the Presbyterian Church and accumulated some wealth. They had eleven children; some dying in childhood. Their four oldest sons fought in and survived the Revolutionary War. (Hofstetter, Dessa; The Devin Family; page 1)

The Devin property in Pittsylvania County, Virginia is shown by deeds and records to be near the Bannister River in the southwest corner of Pittsylvania County, northwest of Danville and east of Martinville, Virginia. In February 17, 1794, William Sr. deeded property to William Jr. as recorded in Pittsylvania County, Virginia Courthouse records. William Sr. bequeathed his house to his daughter, Sarah Devin.

John Bibb of Goochland is the third generation of this family in this country. His grandfather Benjamin Bibb came from Wales to Hanover Co., Virginia. Whom he married is not known. It is said he was a Huguenot who fled to Wales after the revocation of Edict of Nantes, 1685. He had three sons; James, William and Thomas. William Bib had issue: 1) John Bibb; 2) Nancy who married Robert Edwards; 3) Mary married Barton Key [William & Mary Quarterly, VII,103. The son, John of Goochland (Will 24 May, 1769; proved 17 Jul 1769)in 1738 entered 800 acres in Amelia County on Buffalo River and in 1745 1200 acres and in 1759 150 acres married Susannah, d/o William Bigger; His will mentions: "Sons Richard, John, James, William and daughters Susannah wife of James Clark (whom she married 19 May, 1762); Elizabeth, wife of William Farrar; my granddaughter, Lucy Clark, my granddaughter, Susannah Eliz. Bibb; my father-in-law, William Bigger"

Her daughter Unity West, married (1719) William Dandridge and had Nathaniel West Dandridge (b. 1762)d.1810) who married Sally, d/o John Watson and Mary Bigger, d/o Mr. Bigger above.....
