Margaret Lynne Owen

Margaret Lynne Owen, age 55, of Richmond, died May 22, 2000, at Ginter Hall West in Richmond.
Miss Owen was born in Halifax County on October 30, 1944, the daughter of William Leonard Owen and Margaret Louise Carter Owen. She was a member of Arbor Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Kay Owen Pugh and her husband, Rolland Pugh of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one niece and nephew,
Kelly Pugh and Craig Clement, both of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services for Miss Owen will be held May 25 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Averette
Witcher conducting the service. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening, May 24 from 7:00 until 8:30.

William married Margaret Louise Carter 24 Sep 1941, Halifax County, Virginia. Margaret (daughter of William Green Carter, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth 'Molly' Powell) was born 21 May 1915, Halifax Co., Virginia; died 26 Aug 1998; was buried , Oak Ridge Cemetery South Boston, Virginia. [Group Sheet]

I am glad to hear from you. As mentioned before I am the daughter of William Lee Carter born 1944. I have one brother Darryl William Carter, born 1970 (I was born in 1965) My grandparents were Gilbert Thomas Carter, (1905-1998) and Edna Booker Hall Carter. All of us was born in Halifax County VA. Gilbert T was born in Mt Carmel Va near Turbeville Va. My Papa Gilbert was the son of William Green Sr. and Mary E Powell Carter (1874 -1965) Wiiliam Green Carter Sr and wife are buried at Olive Branch United Methodist Church in Mt Carmel. George T. Carter (father of William G. Sr). and Sallie F. are also buried there.


Another William Green Carter who married Mary Thacker is found buried in Caswell County Notes here are placed in order to find the family of this other William Green Carter who is supposed to tied to the W. O Watlington Store and the Watlington Family of Caswell Co., NC. This William Green Carter has a son Charles 'Bo' Carter according to a newspaper account of the store owners.

1870 VA CENSUS HH/FAM 167/168 shows William Carter 62, Betsy 58, Edward and Harriett, George 20. This Richard age 67 appears to be the brother of William; however they are related (not known at this time 2011) Richard Carter age 59 shown in HH/FAM 359 is another Richard Carter who is distinguished by the middle initial "H.".

1910 VA Census shows George T. Carter and Sally Fannie Green have been married 25 years have 7 children, 6 of which are living. George and Sally Fannie live beside two of their sons and their families.


William Carter is the father of George Turner Carter. George Turner Carter named his first child William Green. William, for his father, and Green, for his wife's maiden name.
1900 Census shows George T.'s Birth as Nov 1850. The 1880 VA Halifax Census shows William Carter 72, and Elizabeth, his wife, 66 living in HH/Fam 30/33 next door to his son George Carter, 25 Martha (Sue Green) 25, with children, Wm.(William Green)7, Joseph (Joseph Alpha) 5, James 4, Martha (Mattie Carter Powell) 2, and baby George is 10 months old.

Carter, 59 and two of his sons; William Green, 38; and Harvey Angle 23: It is Harvey and Maggie's (first year of marriage (no children yet) and William Green and wife Mary E. 35, have children Charles E. 14, Ruby M.12, Lois P. 16, Alma L.6, Gilbert 4, Willa 3, and George H. is 4/12..

This tidbit of information explains why the wife of Joseph A. Carter, their 2nd child, knew his Mother as Martha GRAVITT, as George was also known as George T. Gravitt. His wife, Martha Susan complete name is Martha Susan Gravitt GREEN. She is the d/o Susan H. Gravitt and Wm. Nathaniel GREEN.

George married Martha Susan Gravitt 'Susie/Sue' Green 10 Jan 1872, Halifax County, Va., Mt. Carmel District. Martha (daughter of William N. [Nathaniel] Green and Susan [Hunt] Gravitt) was born 18 Feb 1855, Halifax County, Virginia; died 7 Mar 1886, Halifax County, Virginia. [Group Sheet]

Susie Green marries George T. Carter about 1872; they have
8 children, 4 of which die in infancy, and he marries Sally Fanny [Sarah Frances] Green around 1887.

George T. Carter had two wives. Susie Gravitt is found on the death certificate as the mother of Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr.. Both George and Susie are listed as having been from Halifax County, Virginia. Later investigation shows the marriage record as Martha S. Green. An 1890 document shows George T. Carter AlIAS 'Gravitt' is the explanation of my grandmother's recollection. His second wife, Sallie Fanny Green is the sister of his first wife. In 1924 she inherits money from her uncle, John King Gravitt and the 3 of the 4 children of Geo. T. Carter and Sue Green are listed as heirs in this will, as well. By 1930 George T. Carter is listed as widower on the census.


Died:
Martha Susan Green is shown on the 1880 Census in the HH of her husband, George Turner Carter, and living adjacent to the HH of George's Parents, William & Betsy Turner Carter. It is the last time her name will appear on the Federal Census. By 1887 George has remarried, Sally Fannie Green, Susie's Sister. Bible Records for this family show the exact death date of Susan Carter, however, no death record can be located by the State of Virginia.
