Samuel moved with his father, William, to Cabell Co. in the late 1850's, and was listed in the 1860 Cabell census, but Samuel did not continue to Texas with his father in the late 1860's. Instead he appears to have returned to Henry Co., possibly to live with Goode relatives or work family land. He returned to Charlottesville, WV, by 1878, and by 1900 he was living in LA Co., CA, where he died by 1940.

In 1870, Alex and Martha Eggleton are living in Brownsville, Franklin Co., with daughter Nancy, 16. Martha Eggleton is Martha Jane Goode, Mary Draper's younger sister. In 1871 Henry Co., VA, Samuel M. Draper was plaintiff in chancery suit against John L. Wells. In 1873 Samuel purchased land deeded by Patrick Eggleton, and in 1874 he returned land to Patrick's sons, Alexander and George Eggleton. Patrick was Nancy's uncle, and Alex and George were cousins.

Samuel's last recorded transaction in Henry Co. was deeding land to Benjamin F. Gravely in 1876. But according to descendent Terry Alford, Samuel's great great grandson, Samuel's and Nancy's first daughter, Zora, was born in 1874 in Griffithsville, WV.

Before or at the time of his father's death in 1897, Samuel moved to CA and was found farming in the Downey area of Los Angeles Co. near his brother and mother in the 1900 Los Angeles Co. census. Samuel cannot be located in the 1880 census record, so his whereabouts between 1880 and 1897 are unidentified, except that his children were born in WV between 1874 and 1893. He stays in the Downey area of Los Angeles Co. until sometime around 1930 when he is located in the Long Beach area of Los Angeles Co.

Census records identify three sons and five daughters, and Terry Alford adds two more daughters married before the 1900 census. By 1910, Samuel's widowed mother, Mary "Polly" Goode Draper, is living with Samuel and his family. Samuel died sometime between 1930 and 1940, while Nancy died 3 Oct 1841 in Los Angeles County. According to Terry Alford, Samuel and daughter Zora are buried in WV.

Samuel did not appear with his father's family in Texas in 1870, but he has not been located in 1870 and 1880 census records. According to later census records, all of his children born between 1878 and 1897 were born in West Virginia.
