Henry Campbell Rice was killed when James H. Philpott shot him in the chest. Mr. Philpott's daughter Esterleen, married Henry`s brother George, without her father's permission. Henry acted as surety for the marriage license. James Philpott was very angry with Henry. Henry Rice was later called to testify at a local trial, Mr. Philpott declared him a dishonest man who would not be a truthful witness.

Mr. Philpott and Henry Rice later, had words in a store, which was owned by Henry's brother-in-law Wm. Goggin Reynolds. They took their argument outside. Mr. Reynolds watched from the store window and would testify that Henry had slapped Mr. Philpott on the check at which point Mr. Philpott pulled a hand gun and shot Henry through the chest. James H. Philpott was tried twice, but neither jury convicted him.

    William George Reynolds
    1834 - 1862
    Co. E, 57th Va. Infantry

Born in Pittsylvania County on 27 March 1834, William was one of three known children of John Philpott and Rhoda (Smith) Reynolds. William?s siblings were: Susan, and Heary Ann who was born in 1839 and married Ralph G. Adkins in 1861. William and his family farmed in Pittsylvania County as did many of their neighbors. On 9 June 1858, William would marry Elizabeth Adkins. She was born on 2 January 1839 in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of Anderson and Nancy Booker (Adkins) Reynolds. Together they would have two children; William Goggins, born on 21 May 1859; and Elizabeth Cornelius, born 6 October 1861. William and his brother-in-law, Ralph Adkins, enlisted on 1 July 1861 in Company E, 57th Virginia Infantry. Company E was known as the ?Pigg River Greys? and was organized by William H. Ramsey. The regiment would move to it?s camp north of Richmond near the Fairfield Race Course in the fall of 1861. In November they moved to Howard?s Grove and entered winter camp. The unsanitary conditions of camp life brought about sickness and soldiers became unfit for duty and required hospitalization. Many died of typhoid fever, measles, diarrhea or other diseases. Even though many recovered, they were unable to return to duty. William was one of these men who was unable to return to duty. William died of rubella in the Confederate States Hospital in Petersburg, on 16 May 1862. His father drove a buckboard to Richmond and brought his body back to Pittsylvania County for burial. It is not known if William was able to see his infant daughter before his death. His brother-in-law, Ralph was wounded at the Battle of Malvern Hill, but returned to duty when he was captured and taken prisoner at Gettysburg. He would be held in Point Lookout until his exchange on 18 February 1865. Elizabeth was only 23 years old when William died and she never remarried. She died on 19 February 1919 and is buried beside her husband.

George K. Smith (the last ancestor that I have authentic
proof of in 1953 - BTA) owned around 1100 acres of land in
Pittsylvania County, Virginia on Tomahawk Creek (near
Museville). According to family tradition, he was born
near Museville, Virginia and buried near Tomahawk, Va.
where he lived. Family tradition says he was a miller.
Value of property, $15,302; George K. Smith married Susan
Adkins and had the following issue:
    1. Booker (Bowker) Smith was never married. He built the
R.J. Reynolds tobacco factory and manufactured tobacco. He
had a train of wagons and sold it through the Carolinas and
Georgia. He died in early manhood so showed a genius for
business ability quite young. (This line of Smith's are
related to R.J.Reynolds' wife according to Dr. George Smith
Anderson, nephew of Booker Smith). According to his
tombstone at the old Smith home near Tomahawk he died
    Sepember 23, 1841.

    2. Ralph Smith, born September 1, 1813; d. January7,
    1902; married 7th December 1843, Ardennia Wright (b. Jan.
    14, 1827;d. Jan. 24, 1904). Ralph was
willed land on Tomahawk Creek by his father, Geo. K. Smith,
and his son, William lived on a farm adjoining that of his
    brother, Ralph.

    3. William Smith, born September 2, 1818; died August
    2,1896. He married February 18, 1856 Rebecca Hodnett (b.
Sept. 28,1852;d. July 11, 1904). He owned a vast amount of
land on Tomahawk Creek and had many slaves who stayed on
with him even after the war as long as he lived, thus
making it most profitable for him. He was a very
successful farmer. During the Civil War he lost a leg but
this did not seem to handicap him in anyway. He once rode
horseback alone to Kentucky with nine thousand dollars in
his pocket and purchased 1000 acres of land from a Mr.
Grubb for himself, Mr. Joe Reynolds and Ward Reynolds which
extended from Greenpond back to Bearskin Creek, etc.
He and wife were buried at their old home place
where the home and tombstones still stand (1953).

    4. Jabez Smith married Catherine Ann Mahan and died
without issue. They were buried at the old home place near
    Tomahawk.

    5. Rhoda Smith married John Reynolds and lived near
Greenpond Church and they, too, are buried at their old
    homeplace. Adkins-Oakes Cemetery

son of Jesse Anderson of Franklin County. Their
descendants in the Anderson Family Book.

Mahan and are buried at their old homeplace.

    1816; d.April 27, 1883). They lived near Greenpond Church
and are buried at the family burial ground on his farm.
Their descendants in the Anderson Family Book.

    9. Letitia Smith married Ambrose Rucker on December 12,
1853. He was a Captain of Co. "C" 46th Regt., Virginia
Infantry. He was at one time a sheriff of some county.
