Horace W. Witman of Nottingham
Friday, October 27, 2006
Horace William Witman, 93, of Nottingham, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Reynolds Witman; a daughter, Elaine Pennell, wife of Dale of Nottingham; a son, John Witman, residing at home; a sister, Catherine Garver of Wilmington, Del.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Taylor and Lauren Kirk, both of Oxford; three grandsons, Jeffrey Kirk of Nottingham, Gregory Pennell of Oxford and Randy Pennell of Philadelphia; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Pennell, Claire Taylor and Joseph Kirk; many nieces and nephews; and Yildiz Ediger of Ankara, Turkey, who lived with the Witman family in 1963-64 as an AFS exchange student.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Hope Kirk, wife of Larry, on Feb. 13, 2004; his parents, William and Lydie McCaslin Witman; and two brothers, Kenneth Witman and Vernon Witman.
Horace was born on a farm near Rock Springs, Cecil County, Md., July 18, 1913. When he was seven years old, the family moved to a farm below Sylmar, Md., and he lived there until his marriage.
He attended Cherry Hill, a one-room school, for his elementary years. He graduated from Rising Sun High School, Rising Sun, Md., in 1930. In 1934, he graduated cum laude from St. John's College in Annapolis, Md.
He taught high school math and sciences at Calvert High School and Rising Sun High School for 25 years. After teaching school, he worked as a physicist in the Ballistic Research Laboratory, the Limited Warfare Laboratory and the Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Md., for 23 years.
He also attended summer school at Penn State, University of Maryland, Duke University, George Washington College, Washington College, Franklin and Marshall College and Cecil Community College.
Horace was a gentle, quiet and humble man. He was a loving husband and father.
Few people realize that after receiving his master's degree at Penn State, where his thesis was "The Wild Flowers of Cecil Co., Md.," he was asked to teach in the botany department at Penn State. While working at Aberdeen he was asked by the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., to be a physicist in the physics lab there. He refused both positions, not wanting to uproot his family.
He was a member of the West Nottingham Township Historical Commission.
He attended Nottingham Presbyterian Church, Nottingham.
Horace enjoyed hunting Indian artifacts with his family, photography, botany, Cecil County history and following Penn State and Navy sports. He also enjoyed the family cats, Ollie, Mollie and Bessie.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Nottingham Greenstone Presbyterian Church, 499 West Christine Road, Nottingham, where friends and family may call from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday.
Interment will be in the Brookview Cemetery, Rising Sun, Md.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, Building A, Suite 100, 625 W. Ridge Pike, Conshohocken, PA 19428-0860.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Edward L. Collins Funeral Home Inc., of Oxford. Online condolences may be sent to www.elcollinsfuneralhome.com.
