My Dad?s brother?s granddaughter let me know that she has found the family link back to Gyles Carter, born in the 1600?s and prominent in the early Virginia settlement, but I do not have the details. Looks like a good time to see what she has.

He also lived in Sutherlin when I knew him. I have some of Edward?s data but it has not been scanned. Another project!!!!

      Hi James,
I appreciate hearing from you! Here's the thing.....my Carter line appears to be from your Guthrie line. I just recently discovered my Carter line is not really a Carter at all, and I had started by researching my 3rd great grandfather - James Thomas Carter, Sr. born about 1810?-1885? married to a Martha McCann 1822-1885 and both hailed from Halifax county, VA. No one in my family could ever discern their parentage. I tracked down a male descendent via his son, another James Thomas Carter, Jr. 1842-1943 to his son - Walter Raleigh Carter 1874-1970 married to Lottie Sylvia Carter - they are 1st cousins to their son - Andrew Garland Carter 1902-1980 married to Leona Stroman 1907-2001, which lead me to Andy Carter.
Now back to James Thomas Carter, Jr. - he was married 3x and Andy descends from his 1st wife of Caroline H. Wesley 1844-1883 and I descend via his 2nd wife of Elizabeth Hill 1856-1900 and through their son and my great grandfather - James Hill Carter 1894-1961 married to a Martha Price Williams to their son and my grandfather - Carlton Williams Carter 1914-1996. All my people from this line were in or around Halifax county.
I am completely new to researching and using DNA, so please be patient with me. I do have a tree in progress on FTDNA and Ancestry under: BARTUSEK/CARTER Tree and my kit #867350 and password: AC5DC7. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide. I can also provide Andy's kit # and password but I currently have misplaced it....bear with me on that.
I also tracked down 2 other male cousins who descend from this line and waiting upon their results. This is what I have at the moment and I hope to hear from you soon. Have a nice evening and thank you for contacting me.

      > As I mentioned to you, I believe, I am the co-administrator of the Guthrie Project at FamilyTreeDNA. My immediate group in the project is Group 8A, Halifax County, VA. We are descendants of Thomas Guthrie (who left his will in that county in 1786) and wife, Mary Cason.
      >
      > Andrew Garland "Andy" Carter is a Carter by name only and, genetically, a Guthrie. There are several ways that could have happened but adoption is the usual method. I compared Andy's 37 marker DNA profile to mine and we match 35 of 37 genetic markers.; an indication at that level that we are of the same family. Most of the members of Group 8A have tested at the 111 marker level so it is hard to make a call on Any Carter. Occasionally, people have matches at 37 markers and fall completely away by the 67 marker level. I hate to ask people to spend more money on these projects but in this case, Andy really needs to advance his Y-DNA evaluation to 67 markers and, if possible, ideally to the 111 marker level (the highest level). As you probably know, the higher the number, the more refined the discrimination. 37 markers would indicate that he is part of the Group 8A family but not of which branch. Testing at a higher levels would indicate the branch because the project has participants at all the known branches.

      > Halifax County, Virginia is a very tricky slope for genealogists because there were three Guthrie lines in the county. Genetically, none of the three were related. Briefly (about 1820) there were FOUR Guthrie lines in the county but the short term individual married a woman there, remained for a short while, and then left for parts unknown.

      > If you are in contact with a small group of Andy's Carter descent, maybe you all can get together and have Andy's Y-DNA profile increased so that we can determine your origins with the branches. Some stayed in Halifax, some went to Kentucky, some to Tennessee, and some to Mississippi. I suspect you have Carter research and it is certainly good back to when the name change took place. I would put the deep Carter research on pause for the time being until we get this connection done.

      > See if you can get some participation to move up Andy's profile since there appears to be several of you that would share the same descent. Financially, he may be able to do the higher testing himself but it's always good to have a back-up plan.

Andy seems to be more associated with Harry Lee Guthrie, Jr. at 25 and 37 markers than he does me and some of the others. Ronald Burton Guthrie is a documented Ephraim Guthrie descendant and Andy seems to be a marker or two off from Ron. We really need to get Andy tested at higher levels to make a call on his line. Harry is of the Thomas Jr. line of Halifax, Rockingham and Lincoln Cos. descent I mentioned.

Cason Guthrie was the son of Thomas Guthrie and Mary Cason Guthrie who remained in Halifax County and was there at the time of your James Thomas Carter's birth. He was born 1760, married Dorothy Reeves in 1787. He had sons Ephraim, Thomas and Richard B. and a spinster daughter named Letitia. Dorothy died ca. 1800 and Cason married Elizabeth Lee ca, 1802 and had three more children. The second family moved to Christian Co., KY. ca. 1831 and Cason was still alive in the 1850 Census at 90 years of age.

Any of the three sons of Cason were old enough to father your Carter ancestor and so was Cason Guthrie, the father.
