      served in Revolution; he and Carson Guffey [Cason Guthrie] were returning from collecting horses and mules for General Green's Army when they rushed to cross the river unaware that Cornwallis Army had camped there beside the swollen river. Neely and Guffey were recognized and Guffey was shot from his house and killed. Francis loosed his horses jumped into the cane break and on down the river, where he remained until after dark when he discarded his clothes and swam the swollen river and onto his home of his anxious parents

      From the Fort Worth Record-Telegram, Friday, April 8, 1927, p. 9:

      Funeral services for R. P. Neely, formerly in the produce business in Fort Worth, who died in Memphis, Tenn., Thursday, will be held at the Robertson & Mueller Chapel at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The body will arrive at the Robertson & Mueller Undertaking Company at 8:30 o'clock this morning. Neely is survived by one son, James Saufley Neely, Fort Worth, and one daughter, Miss Bertha Neely, Paris. Rev. E. H. Eckel, pastor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, will officiate at the services and interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers are: Max Bergman, W. W. Shipman, K. T. McDavitt, R. C. Combs, Frank Taylor and Charley Nichols. Honorary pallbearers are: Dr. I. C. Chase, Dr. Webb Walker, Dr. R. W. McKean, W. N. Moore, Ben E. Keith and Sam Vaughan.
