      Ellyson

The Ellyson family of Virginia is with little dispute but just as little certainty descended from the colorful Doctor Robert of Maryland and Virginia. Theories on the particulars abound. One centers on a Robert of Newcastle born in 1589. Another involves Cuthbert of Hakwell in Northumberland. The most likely candidate is a Scot. Connecting these dots, however, is dicey and dubious and after all not even a minor sidenote in the scheme of things. Three men of the name appear early on in America ? John, William, and Robert. The first two were in Virginia in 1624 and the third died there in 1656. Documentation over the 150 years after that is fragmentary. The accuracy of this chart therefore begins in 1770 with Onan, the presumed and (if so) illegitimate son of Gerrard of Chesterfield.

Vestryman of St. Peter's parish. Married.
