Rice D. Montague was a native of Cumberland County Virginia. Moved to Christiansburg, Virginia in 1821 and began working in the Montgomery County clerk's office as deputy clerk at the age of fifteen. He served as the Montgomery county clerk from 1831 to 1858.
He was a member of the 1834 committee assigned to oversee the construction of a new courthouse.
He was a member of the US House of Delegates from 1859 to 1861.
Son of Rice Daniel 1764-1849 and Judith Toler Montague.
