I am glad to hear from you. As mentioned before I am the daughter of William Lee Carter born 1944. I have one brother Darryl William Carter, born 1970 (I was born in 1965) My grandparents were Gilbert Thomas Carter, (1905-1998) and Edna Booker Hall Carter. All of us was born in Halifax County VA. Gilbert T was born in Mt Carmel Va near Turbeville Va. My Papa Gilbert was the son of William Green Sr. and Mary E Powell Carter (1874 -1965) Wiiliam Green Carter Sr and wife are buried at Olive Branch United Methodist Church in Mt Carmel. George T. Carter (father of William G. Sr). and Sallie F. are also buried there.


Another William Green Carter who married Mary Thacker is found buried in Caswell County Notes here are placed in order to find the family of this other William Green Carter who is supposed to tied to the W. O Watlington Store and the Watlington Family of Caswell Co., NC. This William Green Carter has a son Charles 'Bo' Carter according to a newspaper account of the store owners.

Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr. was a salesman and then a manager
of Cobb & Crew, Co. Inc. He lived with his family at 672
Jefferson Avenue Danville, Va. from about 1918-1919 until
his death in 1930, after which his family there resided
until 1965-1966 when his widow, Mattie Edwards was
incapacitated.

Samuel Wilson Satterfield, 92, of 1007 Piney Grove Road, Alton died Oct. 27, 2010 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Satterfield was born in Halifax County June 26, 1918 to the late Samuel Ellam Satterfield and Sallie Fannie Carter Satterfield and was married to Virginia Ellen Long Satterfield, who survives. He was a retired self-employed farmer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Patricia S. Walden and her husband, Sam, of Danville; three sons, Eugene Satterfield and his wife, Barbara, of Alton, George Sammy Satterfield and his wife, Sue, of South Boston and Owen Satterfield and his wife, Barbara, of Crystal Hill; one sister, Sallie Carter of South Boston; a brother, Keith Satterfield of Alton; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Carlton Williams of South Boston.

One daughter, Estelle Satterfield Williams and one sister, Myrtle L. Satterfield, also preceded Mr. Satterfield in death.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Olive Branch U.M.C. Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Woodfin officiating.

Visitation was held at Brooks Funeral Home Thursday, Oct. 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Mildred Carter Wilson, 80, passed away February 17, 2015 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She was born in Halifax County on February 23, 1934 to the late Charlie Eddie Carter and the late Lillian Edwards Carter. Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Aubrey Carter, Sarah Carter Calvert and Charles Carter.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters; Thomas Carter, Mary Ellen Carter Goss, Jack Carter, Hilda Carter Nostrandt, Jane Carter Saunders and James Carter.

Margaret Lynne Owen, age 55, of Richmond, died May 22, 2000, at Ginter Hall West in Richmond.
Miss Owen was born in Halifax County on October 30, 1944, the daughter of William Leonard Owen and Margaret Louise Carter Owen. She was a member of Arbor Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Kay Owen Pugh and her husband, Rolland Pugh of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one niece and nephew,

Joseph Welch Reynolds, brother of Mary Frances Reynolds Eggleston contracted polio when he was 13 years old. Unlike many victims, he recovered almost completely and was left with only a weakness in his left leg, ultimately until his death.

Joseph Welch Reynolds was named for his mother's brother, Joseph Alpha Carter, Jr. who died the year he was born; and the Welch name came from Mr. William Welch Clark who was the protector of his father, Samuel Lovelace Reynolds. After the death of his mother, Mary Lou (Molly) Reynolds, Mr. Clark took Sam under his wing and educated him. Molly, who died when Sam was 15 years old, contracted appendicitis, it ruptured, and she died of Sepsis. Mr. Welch Clark lived in a historic house on Main Street, Danville, VA and was a well know bachelor who traveled widely and is remembered by even distant family members and community members as having brought back from a trip to Florida, an alligator for a pet. See photograph of Mr. Welch Clark and his alligator from circa 1918-1921. Mr. Clark never married and had no issue, but my father loved him as though he was his father.

In 1728, William Byrd headed an expedition sent to determine the true boundary between Virginia and North Carolina. One night late that summer, the party camped upstream from what is now Danville, Byrd was so taken with the beauty of the land, that he prophesied a future settlement in the vicinity, where people would live ?with much comfort and gaiety of Heart.? The river along which he camped was named the ?Dan?, for Byrd, supposing himself to be in the land of plenty, felt he had wandered ?from Dan to Beersheba?.
The first white settlement (numerous Native American tribes had lived in the area) occurred downstream from Byrd?s campsite in 1792, at a spot along the river shallow enough to allow fording. It was named 'Wynne?s Falls,? after the first settler. The village has a ?social? reason for its origin, since it was here that pioneering Revolutionary War veterans met once a year to fish and talk over old times.
The establishment by the General Assembly of a tobacco warehouse at Wynne?s Falls in 1793 was the beginning of ?The World?s Best Tobacco Market.? Virginia?s largest market for bright leaf tobacco. The village was renamed Danville by act of the Virginia Legislature on November 23, 1793. A charter for the town was drawn up February 17, 1830, but by the time of its issue, the population had exceeded the pre-arranged boundaries. This necessitated a new charter, which was issued in 1833. In that year, James Lanier was elected the first mayor, assisted by a council of ?twelve fit and able men.?
On July 22, 1882, six of Danville's enterprising citizens founded the Riverside Cotton Mills, which was in its day known the country over as Dan River Inc., the largest single-unit textile mill in the world. The mill is now closed, and many of its buildings have been torn down and the bricks sold. One very important building, "The White Mill," is now being renovated as an apartment complex.
On September 9, 1882, Danville mayor John H. Johnston shot and killed his chief of police John E. Hatcher, after Hatcher demanded an apology for a statement Johnston had made regarding unaccounted fine money. Johnston was charged with murder, and acquitted at trial.

My favorite squash casserole

2 lbs. yellow squash cut in 1/4 slices (4cups
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp. salt
1 onion, chopped
1 red sweet pepper, chopped
1/2 cup margarine
1 egg, beaten
1 cup cheddar cheese
1 8 oz. can water chestnuts, drained
2/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp pepper

Steam vegetables OR put squash, onions, pepper in the 1/2 cup water with the margarine and cook just until tender. Add beaten egg to mayonnaise, sugar, and pepper and melted margarine if veg. steamed.. Add cheddar cheese and water chestnuts. Spoon all into baking dish and bake at 350 for @30 minutes. Freezes really well.

Cynthia Carter Kirkland passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. She was born on November 10, 1947, in Danville, Va. to the late William and Rowena Carter. Cindy was a graduate of George Washington High School, received her Associates and Bachelors degrees from Averett University, and her Masters from Old Dominion University. She spent her entire professional career dedicated to working in social services in Danville, Va., Cumberland County NC Social Service, DSS in Virginia Beach, Va. and as Director of Social Services in Lynchburg, Va. She is survived by her son, Alex Kirkland, and grandson, Jake Kirkland, of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.; her daughter, Anna Kirkland of Greenville, S.C.; her sisters, Susan Carter and Billie Wyatt; brother, Jim Wyatt of Danville, Va.; and nephew, Trey Yeatts and family of Richmond, Va. A funeral will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. Maud Powell Gordon, of Front Royal, Virginia died peacefully at home on April 25, 2011 in the loving presence of her husband of 64 years, Col. A.R. Gordon, Jr. (USAF Retired) and two daughters, Judy Gordon Mentlik of Westfield, NJ and Polly Gordon of Waldorf, MD.

Maud was born May 23, 1926 in Greenville, NC.

After retiring from the Federal Government, she enjoyed overseas travel with her husband. For many years she was an enthusiastic volunteer with the Samuels Public Library.

In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by her wonderful grandchildren, Philip Cosmos Bell of New Zealand, Carly Mentlik of CA, Jacob Mentlik of ME and his life partner, Maia Campoamor and their children Osa and Quillan; her dear sister Alte Faust; sisters-in-law, Julia and Elsie Lammert; and numerous nieces and nephews.

71, of Worthville, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired farmer and tobacco grader for the federal government, a member of Worthville Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Spenneberg Terrell; daughters, Kathleen Terrell of Charlestown, S.C., Rebecca Bourne of Lipton, Ga.; sons, William T. Terrell of Kingsport, Tenn., and Burnard Ashley Terrell of Worthville; a sister, Margaret Ann Reese of Kingston, N.C.; a brother, Rufus P. Terrell of Southhill, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.

She was a member of Queen Street United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was a member of the church choir and The United Methodist Women. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
