    Sarah R. Hasson

Sarah R. Hasson, a former hairdresser in Perryville, died suddenly on August 12, 2009, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, MD. She would have celebrated her 95th birthday in October.

Sarah Louella Reynolds, daughter of Thomas W. and Sarah E. Reynolds, was born in a house on Harford Avenue in Perryville, the town where she lived for the majority of her life.

After graduating from Perryville High School in 1931 at the age of 16, she really wanted to attend nursing school but was too young to apply, so she decided to attend Hairdressing School in Wilmington, DE.

Upon graduation in February 1932, she worked at several different shops in Havre de Grace ?to see how it worked.?

She then moved to Baltimore and worked in a shop there for several years before returning to Perryville to start her own business, the Milady Beauty Shoppe, which she operated for over 60 years.

Her first place of business was in an area over Owens? store on Broad Street in the heart of Perryville. She then moved her shop to an apartment over Sanders? Drug Store. In 1940, she bought a house on Otsego Street, where she both lived and had her business.

In October 1940, she married George Burris Hasson, Perryville Postmaster, who died in 1974. They lived in their Otsego Street home their entire married lives and Mrs. Hasson was still living there at the time of her death.

In November 2002, she was diagnosed with cancer of the hypopharynx and underwent extensive radiation treatments at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. As a result of the radiation, she had some trouble swallowing solid foods and so had existed mostly on liquid nutritional supplements for almost seven years.

?She was a true inspiration to many who knew and loved her,? said Gail Carney, her daughter.

She accepted her illness philosophically and adopted a ?what is to be will be? attitude allowing her to enjoy her life without complaint.

In December 2003 in her late 80?s, she fell and broke her hip, but this didn?t keep her down for too long, either.

Upon discharge from Union Memorial Hospital, she agreed to participate in an NIH study which involved frequent physical therapy treatments by a therapist who came to her home.

She made a very satisfactory recovery and was able to resume most activities she had enjoyed before her fall.

Sarah was known for being a very independent, hard working, fun-loving person with a great sense of humor and wit.

She greatly enjoyed being around people and often commented how much she missed her customers when she finally closed her business because of her illness.

She loved to read and travel ? whether it be close to home or a far-away trip she was always ready to go.

    She enjoyed needlecrafts, especially knitting.

?Her grandchildren never wore a machine-made sweater until they were probably 10 years old,? her daughter commented. ?She has made literally hundreds of baby sweaters and baby blankets which she sold or gave away. She was always working on some type of project.?

She loved family gatherings and recently attended the wedding of a great-niece, followed the next day by the wedding of the daughter of a close family friend.

This past December she traveled to Stratton, VT, to celebrate Christmas with her family at the home of her grandson and his wife.

In October 2007, she traveled to Newport, RI, for her eldest grandson?s wedding, which she thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end, dancing into the evening at the reception.

She also loved to go with her family to their condo in Ocean City, MD, and enjoyed entertaining her friends there, as well.

Sarah or ?Nana? as she was known to her grandchildren, had an incredible will to live a full life, which she definitely accomplished in spite of many serious medical obstacles.

Mrs. Hasson was a lifelong member of the Perryville United Methodist Church, as were her parents before her. She enjoyed volunteering at their monthly potpie luncheons as well as helping weekly at the soup kitchen also sponsored by the church.

For many years, she attended the Perryville Senior Center, participating in most of its activities, and was also a member of the Perryville Homemakers and the American Legion Auxilliary.

Mrs. Hasson is survived by her daughter, Gail Hasson Carney and her husband, Brad, of Timonium; and two grandsons, Jason B. Carney and his wife, Leslie, and Brandon B. Carney. She is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews.

    Her three sisters predeceased her.

As Mrs. Hasson requested, her body was donated to the State Anatomy Board.

Friends are invited to a service in celebration of Sarah?s life to be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Perryville United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Perryville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 312, 375 Broad St., Perryville, MD 21903, or Radiation Oncology Department, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, 6701 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21204
