    : Believed to be one of the 16-year olds in the 1810 Charlotte C ounty tax census.

    1812: Married in Charlotte County on 12 September 1812 to Patsy S cates, ward of Joseph Oliver. His older brother John Eanes posted Sure ty.

    1814: Charlotte County Deed Book 13, page 42 shows William Eanes s old land to C. Hurt on 2 may 1814.

    1815: In Charlotte County court, William Eanes was prepared to t estify for Jabez Smith in August 1815 (Charlotte County Order Book 20, [ 1814-1816], p153). Smith was the plaintiff in a case against Christoph er Hurt. The case was dismissed by the plaintiff. This was one of thr ee cases that day involving Smith who was identified as ÙSan assignee o f Edward Eanes.ÙT Suits against John McNichol, Mager Cumber and Avo n Smith were also dismissed.

    1820: Pittsylvania County Census reflects four free white males u nder age 10, one free white male from 26 to 45, one free white female b etween 26 and 45 years of age. One person was engaged in Agriculture.

    1830: Pittsylvania County Census reflects two male children unde r 5; three male children from 5 to 10 years of age; 2 male children fro m 10 to 15 years of age; one white male from 45 to 50 and one white fem ale from 30 to 40 years of age.

    1840: Pittsylvania County. Census identifies these households as p art of the 107th Regiment of Va Militia. Household includes one white m ale from 5 to 10 years of age; three white males from 10 to 15 years of a ge; one white male from 15 to 20 years of age; two white females under f ive years of age and one white female from 40 to 50 years of age.

    During this period, it is assessed that first wife Patsy Scates died as t he 1850 census names another woman, Martha age 47 as the wife. She wou ld have been too young to be the 40 to 50 year-old woman in the 1840 ce nsus. If Patsy had fatal complications during childbirth, her year of d eath would have been about 1846.
    1849-1855 William figures prominently in his father's will and t he settlement of the estate. The executor's report to the County Clerk i ndicate several significant payments prior to the final settlement in 1 855. (Most of the estate had been settled by March 1, 1852.) William w as advanced $187 when the Will was initially published and received cas h of $439.19 on 15 May 1849 from the executor. His son James received, o n his behalf from the executor, the sum of $203 on 1 January 1852 and t he balance of $32.99 was paid on 1 March 1852. Miscellaneous interest a nd fees were settled and closed the estate account in 1855.,

    Census on 6 November 1850 for the Northern District of Pittsy lvania County. Household number 1154. Lists William Eanes, 66, labore r; Martha, 47; Richard, 23, laborer; Calep (Caleb), 18, laborer; Julia, 1 6 and Fanny, 14. William, Martha and Richard were annotated as ÙSper sons over 20 years of age who cannot read or write.ÙT

    1860: Henry County Census enumerated on 30 July 1860 in the Cart er's Store Post Office District. William was living in Household No. 6 92 between sons Caleb and Richard. William was noted as 79 years of ag e and Martha was noted as 63 years of age. He had a personal estate of $ 50 and both were noted as not being able to read or write.

    Death date has not been determined. Believed to be more than 76 y ears of age.

    1870: Census does not mention him.
    Two unidentified males Reflected in 1820 Census. One of these may a lso be a 'Stephen Eanes'. He is mentioned in Charlotte County Order Boo k No. 10, p134.

    Richard is listed as Private, Co. G, 42nd. In 1860 census, age 26, Ca rter's Store Post Office, Henry County; enlisted 17 March 62 in Martins ville. In Richmond Hospital for debility, 16 Sept 62; AWOL 1 Nov 62; c ourt-martialed 7 Dec 63 and fund guilty of AWOL; sentenced to forfeit 1 2 months pay and to perform hard labor at Richmond for 12 months with 1 2-pound ball attached to his left leg by a three-foot chain; Confined t o Salisbury NC by 15 May 64 when hospitalized there for dropsy; Sentenc e set aside by President Davis and he was ordered to report to his unit 1 D ecember 64.

    James's birth year is inferred from an examination of census records. T he 1860 and 1880 census records put his birth year around 1826/27 while t he 1870 census suggests 1830.

    Caleb is listed in the 1860 census as age 25, a farmer, Carter's S tore Post Office, Henry County. Enlisted as Private at Martinsville. S ice by 30 April 62 in the Staunton Hospital; wounded 8 May 1862 at McDo well ÙSblowed up by powderÙT which fractured his skull. Present 30 June 6 2 to 12 Oct 62
    when he was listed as AWOL. Court-martialed by 2-3 May 63. Sentence w as set aside on 29 May 63 for gallantry at Chancellorsville. AWOL by 1 9 January 64 when court-martialed, found guilty, sentenced to forfeit f our months pay and to perform hard labor for one month under the brigad e commander's direction. Wounded on 19 September 64 at Winchester by ÙS ball which nearly cut the backbone in twoÙT and made POW. Sent to Balti more, MD hospital from 19 to 25 Oct 64; sent to Point Lookout from 26 t o 30 Oct 64 and exchanged at Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia on 15 N ov 64. Transferred to Richmond hospital then furloughed for 30 days. D ied in 1896 from the effects of wounds.

    Name:
    Henry Eanes was the son of Edward Eanes and Jane Sublett (originally the name was Soblet). Jane was a descendant of a Huguenot refugee who settled at Manakintowne south of Richmond on the Huguenot Trail. His cousin and wife Sarah was the daughter of Arthur Eanes and probably Nellie Murray. Arthur's will lists "Eleanor" as his wife, but that could be the formal name for "Nellie." Both Edward and Arthur fought at the Battle at Guilford Court House in 1781. They obviously crossed the Dan River at Boyd's or Irvine's Ferry with General Nathaniel Green.
