A grave marker has been placed in the Cemetery at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, Parkertown, Hart Co GA, by Norman H. Walters, 1995. It states that Robert Walters, SR was born about 1732, died circa 1794 and was in the Revolutionary War. He states also believed buried here are: Peter Walters, John C. Walters, Franklin M. Walters. Much of the original Walters land now lies under Hartwell Lake.
Peter's dates are given as born circa 1755, died circa 1832.

In a 1787 tax listing, Joseph Smith is listed under Robert Walters who was charged with his tax - he was apparently hired out to Robert at that time. In 1795, Ezra Walters would sign bond for Joseph Smith when he married; and in 1832, Capt John Walters would testify to Joseph Smith's service in the Revolution.

1820 Census. Pittsylvania Co VA. Robert Walters, Senr. 1m and 1f over age 45 - no doubt Robert & Seletha. They must have a grown and married child living them because there is also a man and a woman age 26-45 and a boy under age 10 in the household.

1830 Census. Pittsylvania Co VA. Robt Walters Senr. One male age 70-80. No females in household; apparently wife deceased.

ROBERT WALTERS and SELETHA MCBEE were married about 1770 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. SELETHA MCBEE4, daughter of WILLIAM MCBEE and ABIGAIL ?HUBBARD, was born on 10 October 1751 in Halifax County, Virginia. She died before 1830 at the age of 79 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.24

[Have also seen her name as Selethia and Leithia and "Letty"; surname as Magby.]

Although Seletha appears as a daughter in every family tree - I have not found the absolute proof that she belongs here. She certainly did not leave Virginia and go to Tennessee, but then she was already married. Her age, and ages of her children, would indicate she couldn't have been the daughter of any of William McBee "Jr"'s brothers - she was older. Unfortunately no marriage record has been found for Seletha and Robert Walters - but then they haven't been found for several of her siblings. The source of her exact birthdate as often found, can also not be certified by any known document, but again, it must be close, considering ages of her children. And even if William McBee "Jr" was her father, that would not assure that Abigail was her mother. The given name Seletha, or forms thereof, does get handed down in this line of the family - I have not found the name Abigail used again in Seletha's line, but then I don't have the names of many of the grandchildren.

It is possible that the birth of Seletha and a death as Feb of 1834 came from the writings of Earl Quintrell, said to be at the Tennessee Archives. His wife was a McBee descendant. Seletha did not appear to be in the 1830 census with her husband.

Robert Walters and Seletha McBee. For many years, I carried Robert's name with the middle initial "C"; however, after much research I was never able to prove that his middle initial was "C". Hopefully you might be able to help me here.

Robert Walters was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, and died February 28, 1834, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He married Seletha McBee about 1771 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, daughter of William McBee and Abigail (?) McBee. She was born October 10, 1751, in Halifax County, Virginia, and died in 1834, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Clement Walters' uncle Robert Walters and several of his grown sons also moved to Georgia. Robert and family came in the 1790's and settled primarily in Franklin Co. Old maps show Franklin to have been quite large, encompassing part of South Carolina. A note found in a mail group states that some of his Warmack family deeds start out with the phrase "thought to be in Habersham Co but on survey found to be in Franklin" indicating some confusion about county lines. Franklin Co GA Tax list of 1798 includes Clement Walters. Clement Walters of Franklin Co GA was entitled to two draws in the 1805 Lottery, but drew two blanks; he drew land in 1832 in the Cherokee Land Lottery as a Revolutionary Soldier. [Some references state that he was in the War of 1812 - I believe it may have been the Revolution instead. Only an oath was required of Revolutionary soldiers for the 1832 Lottery. A Habersham Co mail group had a post concerning a Lucy Waters who married James Colley and lived in Habersham County. Clement's mother was of couse named Lucy.. In 1840 there was a William Waters living in Habersham, no others of similar name. He was still there on p.256b of the 1850 Census: William Waters age 55, born in GA. His family had only initials. N. A. age 45, female, born in SC. The following young men: G. W. age 16, C. V. W. age 11, and D. W. age 8. Since he was named as one of the Executors of Clement's will, I feel sure he was a son, born about 1795. Will dated 30 Aug 1835, Habersham Co, and proved by Benjamin C. Wyly, Obadiah and William Walters, Executors. Wife Rachel. Children Martha, Mary Ann. [Clement definitely had sons - see the 1820 census. Maybe he had already given to the older children and named only the children by Rachel in his will. Or maybe the original will would provide more information.] Here is a full transcript of the will which does show that Clement married twice and had other children. It also represents several spellings of the surname - Clement was illiterate so chances are good he didn't know how to spell his name and many other members of this family became Waters rather than Walters over time. The fact that it is very easy to cross both the L and the T has made the name difficult to interpret in handwritten documents. I have no clues as to when the first wife died and Clement Walters remarried so cannot venture a guess beyond the fact that it's likely the two young daughters were Rachel's and very possibly the only children of Rachel when he wrote his will in 1835. He did specify that money be divided among his first wife's children and made no other bequests except to the two youngest daughters. Sally Slayden was apparently still living in 1806 so the older children would have been hers. Published in the Southern Banner at Athens, GA, 5 Aug 1837 and 12 Aug 1837, and for at least the next three weeks. Postponed Sale. Son, Charles Ewell Carter names daughter Lucy Walters Carter; his wife Kesiah Walters, and Frances Carter (nee Walters) are relatives. Moreover, after studying this family for many years and observing the naming patterns employed by them, I have concluded that Frances Walters [wife of Richard Carter, Gunsmith] is very likely the granddaughter of Immigrant, Charles Ewell. The name Ewell is passed down for several generations among her descendants, as is the Magby name for her grandmother, Susannah Magby.

By proving who she is NOT, Frances Walters, wife of the Gunsmith. She is not Frances Neal; the Neals located in this part of Halifax are of the 'Beaverpond of Amelia Neals' The d/o William and Martha Neal married Samuel Carter. His daughter, Louisiana Franklin, married Thomas David Neal of the same family of Beaverpond Neals. So there was an association between the Carters and these Neals; but not to the Gunsmith, and certainly not to the Daniel Neales.

I also considered the Watkins of Chickhomany Creek and Swift Creek; location of Giles families very early, but no found connection to the Gunsmith.

Some member of the Walters family is shown singed, [witness] on every document signed by Richard and George and Frances Carter. [denotes a family member]

The Walters are documented with 4 Magby wives. Why else would Richard Elijah Carter, s/o Spencer Carter name one of his children with the middle name Magby, if his grandmother, Frances Carter is not a Magby. [The Magbys are Scottish immigrants who travel from Charles Co., MD]

This preponderance of circumstantial evidence and thorough research into the families around her, has led me to conclude Frances Walters married Richard Gunsmith Carter and after his death, James Lucas. She is the daughter of William Walters and Susannah Magby [Mockbee, etc]

Son, Charles Ewell Carter marries back into the Walters.

William Walters, in 1822, loaded his wife and two children in a Kub Boat in Alabama, and made his way to Illinois by way of the rivers, and landed in Sangamon Co., where he remained one year, and then removed to Fulton County.We frequently speak of old settlers being well known in the early history of this county, but Mr. Walters was known nearly all over the state and none knew him but to love him.
When he first landed in Illinois, he had one bed(straw), a rifle and .25 cents in money.The first horse he owned he mauled rails to pay for and this horse was killed by over-riding by a negro who took it without the knowledge of Mr. Walters.
Before his death, his property was valued at $10,000.He was a very strong man both mentally and physically and was called jokingly Paul Bunyan.He was born May 1788 in Jefferson Co., Tennessee. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 serving under General Jackson and consequently was a pensioner up to his death, which occurred September 16, 1877. He also fought in the Black Hawk War.I understand that in Lewiston, Ill. the D.A.R. is named after his father Thomas Walters.
William Walters bought the area, now Bernadotte Township, from the Pottawotamie Indians in exchange for an armful of fur pelts.The Indians atfirst were friendly then they put a price upon his head because of the land deal. We have a copy of the painting of William Walters trading with the Indians,(Jack L. Hysel).This picture was in the Lewiston, Il post office for years and nobody seems to know where it went. It is a very famous picture.

Among the mountains of Tennessee William Walters developed the physical strength and mental courage essential to successful pioneering.Through his veins flowed Scottish-German ancestors and on the maternal side his people were vigorous patriots during the Revolutionary War.His mother not only had carried on the work of the farm during her husband's absence, but she had carried supplies to the soldiers of the Continental Army, often wading through ice-clogged streams up to her waist upon her mission of mercy.William was a man of remarkable physical prowess and all through his life was wont to astonish observers by his feats of daring.It is recorded of him that he could take a two-bushel sack of wheat in his teeth and throw it ten feet and he at one time shot a deer across Spoon Creek, waded the ice-bound stream and swam back again, carrying the deer by the ear with his teeth.He was an unerring shot and there was plenty for him to shoot in those days.He knew much of military tactics, as he had served in the War of 1812 and subsequently was a soldier in the Black Hawk War.There were but twelve voters in what is now Fulton County at the time of his arrival, but there were plenty of Pottawatomie Indians, the majority of whom were peaceable inclined.There were bad Indians to be disciplined also and Mr. Walters use toalwayscarry his gun when he went to feed his stock.When it became known that he had been in the Black Hawk War the Indians of his neighborhood offered a hundred bucksins for his scalp and it is believed that a number of seekers after this prize met death at the hands of the able cracksman.Always on the lookout for danger from Indians or wild beasts, he became remarkably cleer of vision and quick of motion.About 1834 Mr. Walters sold his Bernadote farm for $400.00 and a horse and moved to Farmers Township, where the old soldier and pioneer passed his last days, his life milestones piling up until he reach ninetyyears, his death occurring in 1877.His wife preceded him in 1852.

Family research from a Manuscript titled "Genealogical Records of Richardsons and Waddills of Virginia and Kentucky" written by Mrs. Stacy [Pocahontas Hewell Hutchinson] in 1939 has information passed along from letters written in 1902 by Mrs. Mary Waddill of Woodville, McCracken Co KY. She is said to have been a great aunt of Mrs. Stacy and was 88 years old at the time the letters were written. Mary's father was Charles Waddell of Pittsylvania Co VA, son of a Noel Waddill. Peyton Carter:
There is a George Carter, who inherits land in the will of Richard Womack at Gilly's [possibly Grilly] Mill in Henrico County, Virginia (in a part that later became part of Chesterfield County, VA)in 1725. It seems likely that George Carter was Womack's son-in-law. He then immediately sold this land to Thomas Jefferson II (grandfather of the future President). Jefferson bequeathes this land in his will, written in 1725 to his daughter Judith Farrar, wife of George Farrar. (This land was adjacent to additional lands that were owned by Matthew Ligon, father of Richard Ligon, 1745 - 1820, of Amelia/Nottoway.) About 1760, the Farrars sold this land and moved to Mecklenburg to be near Judith's brother, Field Jefferson.

In 1803 in Charlotte County, VA, a George Carter makes his will, in which he names his son Richard Carter, son-in-law Eli Roby, and wife Mary; it is wintessed by Clement Read, Daniel Hendrick and Coleman Carter. Coleman Carter married Elizabeth Smith in Charlotte in 1794 and then remarried to Mary Wingo in Amelia in 1806. (It is unknown if the inspiration behind Coleman Carter's name is related to James Coleman, mentioned above with a George Carter in 1745.)

Frederick, son of John Frederick and Anna Maria (Arnd) Miller, was probably born about 1751 near the line separating Patrick and Henry Counties in Virginia.
His name appeared on a list of tithables (taxable individuals) for Halifax County, Virginia during the period 1782-1809. On April 12, 1787, Frederick married Mary
Frances Carter of Halifax County. They were the parents of at least ten children, who were:
Anderson, Vincent, Richard, Frances, Patsey, Giney 'Jane', John F., Elizabeth, Ewell and Charlotte Miller. On June 26, 1790, a deed was recorded in Halifax County (DB14/636) for 200 acres of land on Birch Creek which Frederick Miller purchased from James Fears. On April 22, 1805, another deed was recorded (DB21/25) whereby Frederick Miller & c. sold 100 acres of land to Spencer Carter. [His wife's brother]
The Halifax County list of tithables for the period 1805-1809 show Frederick Miller's household with two tithables, indicating a son born prior to 1789. Available census records show the oldest son, listed above, to have been Anderson Miller, born about 1792, so there may have been one additional son in Frederick Miller's household.
The 200 acres on Birch Creek appear to have been sold to a William James on September 27, 1813 (DB24/374, 467) just prior to the family's departure for Maury County, Tennessee where Frederick's elder brother, Harman Miller, had already taken up residence. In a letter to Don Brown of Toledo, Ohio, Jane A. Miller, a descendant of Frederick, stated that she had found reference to him in Maury County, Tennessee Court Records, as early as August 1814. We also know from court records that Frederick Miller was a buyer at the estate sale of one O.P. Nicholson on October 28, 1815 in Maury County. Frederick Miller first appeared on the Maury County tax rolls in 1816, and died intestate, on his farm there in the Fall of 1827.
Anderson Miller, the oldest known son of Frederick and Mary Frances (Carter) Miller, was born about 1792 in Virginia (per, the 1850 Maury County, Tennessee Census). Though we do not presently have a marriage record for him, we know from that same census that his wife's name was Holley (b. ca. 1784 in Virginia). Selina J. Miller, born about 1826, is listed in the Anderson Miller household during the 1850 census and was probably a daughter. If so, then Anderson and Holley were married by 1824. There was a Bill of Sale recorded in Halifax County, Virginia on January 22, 1820, whereby an Anderson P. Miller bought slaves from a George A.
Wyllie (DB29/118). It is not known if this was Frederick Miller's son or not since Anderson Miller also appeared on the 1820 Maury County Census with two males and two females under 10 years of age.
Vincent Miller was married to his cousin Mildred, daughter of John Miller, and granddaughter of Harman Miller, Sr. of Maury County, Tennessee on July 14, 1828. They were the parents of at least three children, including: Alfred C.
(b. ca. 1829), Nancy Jane (b. ca. 1835) and William Rufus
Miller (b.ca. 1836). Vincent (Vinson) Miller appeared as a single individual in the 1820 Maury County Census at age 26-45 years. He apparently died about 1848 as his Last Will and Testament is recorded in W.B. B, p. 25 (1848). From this document we have learned the names of the previously named children. The Will of John Miller (1848), also names his daughter, Mildred Miller, as the wife of Vincent Miller. In that document her father left Mildred .... eighty acres of land off of my Campbell tract ... also the following negores Henry, Beck, and her child Harvey and fifty dollars ... was born on March 7, 1799 in Halifax County, Virginia and
accompanied his parents to Maury County Tennessee about 1814. He was married in

Jane A. Miller of Memphis, Tennessee, they were the parents of seven children. Of these,
Thomas Miller
(1833-1913) is the only one who is known. He was born in Calloway
County, Kentucky.
John F. Miller
was born about 1808, probably in Halifax County, Virginia. He was
married to
Hannah Williams
in Maury County, Tennessee (Bond date: Oct. 9, 1826).
They were the parents of 11 children who were:
J.H., Jeremiah T., Martha E., Mary C.,
Susan, Amanda, N.E., John A., RebeccaT., Sarah A.
and Frances G. Miller.
Ewell Miller was the youngest son of Frederick and Mary Frances (Carter) Miller. Born about 1811, probably in Halifax County, Virginia. Married in Maury County, Tennessee on Oct. 17, 1834, to Mary W. Sladen (b. ca. 1820). They were the parents of Joseph T., William B. and Coleman Miller.
Frances Miller, was obviously an elder daughter of Frederick and Mary (Carter)Miller, for she was married to Thomas Hodges in Halifax County, Virginia and apparently lived in Caswell County, NC later, not accompany her parents to Maury County, Tennessee. On Sept. 22, 1829, Frances and Thomas Hodges gave William Miller (her brother?) of Maury County, Tennessee, Power of Attorney to secure their part of the estate of Frederick Miller (Halifax County DB37/354).
Of the other daughters of Frederick and Mary Frances (Carter) Miller, even less information is known. Patsey (
Martha) was married to James Higgs and possibly lived in
Alabama.
Gincey(Jane) was married to Evan S. Polk.
Elizabeth was the wife of Joseph Leymaster
and Charlotte was married to William Sherrod on Oct. 14, 1816, in Maury County, Tennessee.

Presley CARTER was born about 1765 in Halifax County, Virginia. (1) He resided in 1820 in Caswell County, North Carolina. (126) He died after 1820 in Tennessee.

On 29 Jan 1791, Presley bought 16 1/2 ac. in Halifax County from William WADDELL for 9 lbs. 15 shillings. Witnesses: Levin CARTER and Nathanial WADDELL. DB 15, p.137.
On 19 Apr 1792, Presley bought from Noel WADDELL for 50 lbs. 200 ac. on Toby's Creek bounded by Philip THOMAS and RUSSELL. Not witnessed was presented in court by Noel himself. DB 15, p. 336
On 3 Jul 1795, Presley CARTER deed to Abner RODING. Witnesses: John ATHERTON, James RODDEN, Frederick MILLER. DB 16, pg. 483.
On 7 Apr 1805, Presley CARTER, Levin CARTER, Thompson CARTER and Frederick MILLER sold to Spencer CARTER, 100 acres of Richard CARTER's land. Parents: Richard CARTER and Frances __?__ .[Walters]

Wm P. Carter Deed to A. P. Carter. The State of Texas, County of Fannin. Know all men by these present that I Wm P. Carter of the county and State aforesaid, for and in consideraiton of the natural love and affection which I have and bear for my Son A. P. Carter of the County and State aforesaid and for the further consideration of Fifty Dollars to me in hand paid by my said son the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have this day bargained, sold, and conveyed such to the said A. P. Carter a certain 2 Horse Wagon and two large Black Mane mules, and Harnesses for the same, it being the wagon and mules etc brought by me from Tennessee to said State of Texas to have and to hold the same unto Said AP Carter, his heirs or assigns forever, hereby warranting and forever defending the title to Same to Said AP Carter, his heirs or assigns against the claim or claims of all persons whomsoever Lawfully claiming the Same. The P Couort, last Dec, ordered that the overseers should bind out Travis Carter, orphan of Richard Carter, decd. The overseers aforesaid, in obedience to that order, have bound out Travis Carter as an apprentice to said Spencer until 20 Oct 1794. Carter will be taught the trade of bricklayer. Travis Carter, s/o Richard and Frances Walters Carter was not age 21 at his Father's death. He was bound out to Spencer, his uncle, until his 21st birthday 20 Oct 1794.

Spencer Carter is NOT linked by DNA to the Giles Carter Lines of Halifax Co. He is found in Halifax, upon his marriage to Verlinda Lucas. He is also found in Albermarle on the 1785 Federal Census. He is the s/o Frances Walters, d/o William. Frances Walters married Richard Carter and 2nd James Lucas. The known dna for Giles Carter Descendants is NOT a match to other descendants of Giles, nor the Goochland Carters, nor the Robert 'King' Carters. These descendants of Richard 'Gunsmith' Carter is R1b-08; descendants of Giles2, s/o Giles are R1a-02. Richard 'Gunsmith' Carter's parentage is still a question.

Spencer Carter died about the year 1861 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jane Soyars, in Pittsylvania County. Her home was burned later, and the family Bible and other records destroyed.
Of the 17 children of James Soyars; 2 married into the Thomas Carter lines; and another married into the Giles Carters; daughter of Spencer Carter and Verlinda Lucas Carter m. Thomas Oakes Soyars. Spencer Carter died in their home in Danville, Virginia.
