Stephen Dubose, born ca. 1702/3, son of Isaac and Suzanne Couillandeau Dubose, the emigrants, married 1st Lydia (d. ca. 1739) and married 2nd Elizabeth. He lived for a time in Williamsburg Dist., and about 1769/70 he and his family moved up to Lynch's Creek - from Land Grant in 1770 in Craven Co., in Memorials records at Dept. of Archives, Columbia, S. C. On this he is listed as "Dubusk". His plat of 1769 shows him on the south side of Lynchs Creek in the location of what later became Cartersville, S. C.

Mary married Giles of Rockingham NC Carter 1785, Jamestown, Berkeley, SC. Giles (son of Charles Powell dna Carter and Lydia, [maybe] Mrs. Charles Powell Carter) was born Abt 1764, Virginia; died 2 May 1846, Carter's Crossroads, South Carolina. [Group Sheet]

Thirty-Ninth Alabama Infantry Regiment

This regiment was organized at Opelika in May 1862, and proceeded at once to Mississippi. It was there brigaded under Gen. Frank Gardner, with the Nineteenth, Twenty-second, Twenty-fifth, and Twenty-sixth Alabama regiments. It participated in the weary march into Kentucky, and came back with the army to Murfreesboro. The regiment took part in that battle, and with heavy loss in casualties, having gained much credit for repulsing an attack of the enemy the day before. The regiment was with the army when it fell back to the Chattanooga line, and took part in the battle of the Chicamauga with a very heavy loss of men. At Mission Ridge the loss was light, and the Thirty-ninth, now under Gen. Deas of Mobile as brigade commander, wintered at Dalton. From there to Atlanta the regiment was a conspicuous actor in all the fighting of the army, suffering severely. And when, under Gen. Hood the fate of the Confederacy was risked on the "iron dice of battle," in the trenches of Atlanta, and at Jonesboro, the ranks of the Thirty-ninth were thinned sadly by the casualties of those desperate struggles. It marched with the army into Tennessee, and lost a number of prisoners at Nashville. Emerging from that train of disasters, the regiment rallied to the call of Gen. Johnston in the Carolinas, and took part in the operations there, though reduced to a bare skeleton. It was there consolidated with the Twenty-second and Twenty-sixth-Fiftieth Alabama, but was surrendered a few days later.

Actually, at the time of William Ingram Carter's birth, Cartersville was in old Darlington District, which became Darlington County only after the Civil War was over. In 1901 Florence County was part of the split-up of old Darlington County, and Cartersville then became a part of Florence County. It is just west of Timmonsville on U.S. Highway 76.

At the start of the War Between the States a.k.a. Civil War, the then Capt. Carter, known as "Bill" was the Commanding Officer of Company A, 14th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, Confederate States of America, headquartered out of old Cartersville, which was then a thriving town with a railroad running through the center, the same tracks that carried many of the men who enlisted there off to boot camp in what is now known as Dentsville in Richland County adjacent to Columbia. Cartersville was later destroyed by fire, and is now just a sleepy rural crossroads on U.S. Hwy. 76.

Bill Carter was the husband of Caroline "Mink"/"Minkie" Timmons Carter, and both of them rest within the fenced and gated cemetery, located in a field very near the crossroads. Also buried there is his brother, Giles Carter, who also served the South as a member of Company A.

Bill and Giles' father was a prominent area man named Charles Powell Carter II who reared a large family, predominately sons, along with his wife, the former Susan Ingram. It was Bill's father who inspired the name Cartersville.

Two of those sons were killed in the war. William was a Colonel by the end of the conflict. His brother, Company A's Adjutant, Lt. Sidney Carter, "Sid" sent letters home to his wife Ellen Timmons Carter, known commonly as "Bet" and "Bettie" during the unit's travels. The letters, for the most part, were well preserved, and led to the now out-of-print book "Dear Bet-The Carter Letters 1861-1863" by Bessie Mell Lane of Clemson, South Carolina. The book is registered in the Library of Congress. It was printed in 1978 and a 2nd printing was in 1979. Sidney was killed at Gettysburg, and the letters stopped. John Carter was killed at Chancellorsville, Virginia.

A few of William's male siblings were part of the pre-war militia group known as the "Lynches Creek Guards" which formed the basis of Cartersville's Company A.

I have figured out this much on Leon Sellers Carter line utilizing Findagrave and death certificates for the more recent of the line.... Margaret Caroline Byrd must have been with child when her husband was killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia.
