Presley CARTER was born about 1765 in Halifax County, Virginia. (1) He resided in 1820 in Caswell County, North Carolina. (126) He died after 1820 in Tennessee.

On 29 Jan 1791, Presley bought 16 1/2 ac. in Halifax County from William WADDELL for 9 lbs. 15 shillings. Witnesses: Levin CARTER and Nathanial WADDELL. DB 15, p.137.
On 19 Apr 1792, Presley bought from Noel WADDELL for 50 lbs. 200 ac. on Toby's Creek bounded by Philip THOMAS and RUSSELL. Not witnessed was presented in court by Noel himself. DB 15, p. 336
On 3 Jul 1795, Presley CARTER deed to Abner RODING. Witnesses: John ATHERTON, James RODDEN, Frederick MILLER. DB 16, pg. 483.
On 7 Apr 1805, Presley CARTER, Levin CARTER, Thompson CARTER and Frederick MILLER sold to Spencer CARTER, 100 acres of Richard CARTER's land. Parents: Richard CARTER and Frances __?__ .[Walters]

Wm P. Carter Deed to A. P. Carter. The State of Texas, County of Fannin. Know all men by these present that I Wm P. Carter of the county and State aforesaid, for and in consideraiton of the natural love and affection which I have and bear for my Son A. P. Carter of the County and State aforesaid and for the further consideration of Fifty Dollars to me in hand paid by my said son the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have this day bargained, sold, and conveyed such to the said A. P. Carter a certain 2 Horse Wagon and two large Black Mane mules, and Harnesses for the same, it being the wagon and mules etc brought by me from Tennessee to said State of Texas to have and to hold the same unto Said AP Carter, his heirs or assigns forever, hereby warranting and forever defending the title to Same to Said AP Carter, his heirs or assigns against the claim or claims of all persons whomsoever Lawfully claiming the Same. in 1830, Paschal had in his household, 1 boy under 5, 1 age 5 - 10, 1 10-15, one girl 10-15 and one 15-20.
Paschal was a staunch Confederate as was his son, John. However, his son Fauntleroy was a Unionist. Paschal disinherited Fauntleroy. The families did not speak to each other for years. Paschal was a member of the Masonic Lodge. The Masons drafted his obituary. In 1872, he gave a deposition in support of his sister, Henrietta Carter SMITHSON's application for widow's pension.

Notes:

Margaret Elizabeth Carter was born near Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. She was enumerated in the 1850 Census, Knox County, Tennessee, Strawberry Plains community, in her father's household. She came to Texas with her parents and siblings in 1859 and lived in Bonham, Grayson County. After the Civil War, she married a widower, William Anderson Routh, whose first spouse had died during the war. Margaret Elizabeth became a stepmother to three young children and had six children of her own. Her first baby was stillborn or died shortly after birth. The last baby lived about a month. They were buried in the churchyard of the little rural Porter Church where their maternal grandparents and a paternal grandfather were buried. When Margaret Elizabeth died in 1874, she was layed to rest by her babies and near her parents.

CARTER DEAD AT LUFKIN
Death Occurred Tuesday Night--Funeral at Weimar Cemetery Thursday Afternoon

News was received here early Wednesday morning announcing the death of H. M. Carter, which occurred at Lufkin, Texas, some time Tuesday night, after a long and painful illness. The body of Mr. Carter will be brought here for burial, and the funeral will take place Thursday afternoon immediately after the arrival of the 2:35 train form the east. All friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral.

Horace M. Carter lived here for many years, where he was engaged in the livery and hotel business, and afterward cotton weigher. He left here a number of years ago and moved to East Texas, engaging in the lumber business. During the time he lived here he was highly regarded by all. Being of a natural genial disposition, upright and correct in habits, as true as steel to his friends, generous to a fault, he won, the friendship of all, and few men possessed such a large circle of friends as he. His death is deeply and sincerely deplored by all.

He leaves a widow, one daughter and one son, besides a large circle of relatives and friends, to whom our hearfelt sympathy is extended.
