    Peyton Carter
There is a George Carter, who inherits land in the will of Richard Womack at Gilly's [possibly Grilly] Mill in Henrico County, Virginia (in a part that later became part of Chesterfield County, VA)in 1725. It seems likely that George Carter was Womack's son-in-law. He then immediately sold this land to Thomas Jefferson II (grandfather of the future President). Jefferson bequeathes this land in his will, written in 1725 to his daughter Judith Farrar, wife of George Farrar. (This land was adjacent to additional lands that were owned by Matthew Ligon, father of Richard Ligon, 1745 - 1820, of Amelia/Nottoway.) About 1760, the Farrars sold this land and moved to Mecklenburg to be near Judith's brother, Field Jefferson.

Their fathers, Field and Peter Jefferson are the sons of Thomas Jefferson Jr. and his wife Mary Field. Another son, George Jefferson, explored the largely unpopulated area which is now northwestern Pittsylvania County and Franklin County, Virginia. Peter Field brought some of George's land in 1774 and was in the order books as a resident by 1779. When he died in 1794, he left his widow and eleven children, ranging in age from 9 years to 31.

    THE JEFFERSON FAMILY OF PITTSYLVANIA
    COUNTY.

Communicated by Mrs. N. E. Clement, Chatham, Va.

In number 3 of Vol, XXII., in an account of the Allen family,
mention is made of he marriage of Elizabeth Allen to Field Jefferson,
mother of Col. Peter Jefferson, of Albemarle. Field Jefferson's
will, dated 1762, is filed at Mecklenburg Courthouse, and in it he
names four sons, viz.: Thomas, Peter Field, George and John.

George Jefferson patented large bodies of land in Pittsylvania
County, a part of which he later sold to his brother Peter Feld.

In the first lists of tithables taken in Pittsylvania County we
    find,
"List of Tithables taken by George Jefferson in Pittsylvania
    County, Camden Parish, Year 1767."

    In list occurs following items:

    "George Jefferson (Mecklenburg)
John Davis, Overseer, and negroes (to wit), Land
    Tithes Acres.
Sam, Chance, Pompey, Phillis, Pal and Sary 7 8000

In May, 1774, George Jefferson, of Lunenburg, sells to Peter
Field Jefferson, of Mecklenburg, for L120, 409 acres on Turkey
    Cock Creek, Pittsylvania Co.

For L60, 321 acres on Sailor's Creek, Pittsylvania Co.
For L500, 1005 acres on Turkey Cock Creek, Pittsylvania.

Again in 1776, he sells him 140 acres in Pittsylvania. Peter
Field Jefferson must have soon after this removed to Pittsylvania
County to live, for in 1779 we find him selling 380 acres for L350
to Elisha Walker, and in the deed giving his place of residence as
Pittsylvania County. There is no will of Peter Field Jefferson
recorded in Pittsylvania, but there is one of his wife, Mrs.
Elizabeth Jefferson, dated 1828. In it she mentions

    Page 182.

following children: Sons Field Jefferson, John Jefferson, Samuel A.
Jefferson, Alexander Jefferson, Archer Jefferson, dec'd, and Thomas
Jefferson, dec'd; daughters Patsy Brewer and Judith Jefferson. From
the marriage Register we find that on Feb. 27, 1806, Thomas Jefferson
married Elizabeth Ball. Feb. 20, 1808, Alexander Jefferson married
Elizabeth Smith. Alexander Jefferson's will is dated 1837 and
    probated 1838.

A grandson of Alexander Jefferson, Col. David Alexander Jefferson, of Chatham, Virginia is a prominent member of his family to-day.

Peterfield married Elizabeth Allen 29 May 1762, Cumberland County, Virginia. Elizabeth (daughter of Samuel Allen and Martha Archer) was born 7 Dec 1739, Cumberland County, Virginia; died 7 May 1828, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. [Group Sheet]

    Lunenburg marriages:
David Garland's letter of consent to the marriage of George Jefferson and daughter, Elizabeth Garland.

Rudolph Rorer and Elizabeth Rorer, twins, were born in 1797 on Sunday, 8th day of October, under
the planet LUNA. He apparently owned slaves. In the Pittsylvania County, VA death records there is a record of a slave named Eliza Rorer, owned by Rudolph, who died of cancer at age 39 in June 1861. Rorer's Harpen Creek Mill Rudolph Rorer received title to this forty-one acres as a gift. The Rorers were millers and Abraham Sr. and Abraham Jr. both owned sawmills in the county. The elder was a son-in-law of Harmon Cook, who owned at least two mills. Cook built one of these on Tomahawk Creek, and the other he bought from George Jefferson on Turkey Cock Creek.

George married Elizabeth Garland 2 Jul 1764, Lunenburg, Virginia. Elizabeth was born 10 Sep 1745, Caroline Co., Virginia Colony; died 1815. [Group Sheet]

  5. 13.  Thomas JeffersonThomas Jefferson Descendancy chart to this point (4.Peter3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Martha1) was born 2 Apr 1743, Shadwell Estate Goochland, Virginia; died 4 Jul 1826, Monticello, Albemarle County, Virginia.

    Notes:

John Wayles was Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson's father, Thomas Jefferson's father-in-law. He was born in Lancaster, England, on 31 January 1715. At some point he emigrated to Virginia. His home was The Forest, in Charles City County. His first wife was Martha Eppes, born at Bermuda Hundred on 10 April 1721; they married on 3 May 1746. Martha gave birth to twins on 23 December 1746, a boy and a girl; according to Thomas Jefferson's notes, the girl was stillborn and the boy lived only a few hours. Almost two years later, on 31 October 1748, Martha Wayles gave birth to her only surviving child, also named Martha. She died less than a week later, on 5 November 1748, at the age of 27.

Wayles' second marriage, according to Jefferson's notes, was to a woman of the Cocke family (no first name is given). The first child of this marriage, Sarah, did not survive to adulthood. The second child, Elizabeth, was born 24 February 1752; Tabitha was born 16 November 1753; and Anne was born 26 August 1756. Jefferson notes that Wayles' second wife died, but not the date; obviously sometime between August 1756 and 26 January 1760, when Wayles married his third wife, Elizabeth Skelton (incidentally the widow of Reuben Skelton, brother of Martha Wayles' first husband Bathurst Skelton). Elizabeth Skelton Wayles died a little more than a year after her marriage to John Wayles, on 10 February 1761; they had no children.[1]

After the death of his third wife Wayles took his slave Elizabeth Hemings as his mistress, according to several sources. He was the father of her children Robert, James, Peter, Critta, Sally, and Thenia Hemings.[2]

Wayles died on 28 May 1773, leaving substantial property and debt which took years for Thomas Jefferson and the other co-executors of Wayles' estate to deal with. The majority of Wayles' papers and financial records do not survive, having disappeared from Eppington in the mid-nineteenth century.

All of the above information comes from a memorandum by Thomas Jefferson in the Edgehill-Randolph Papers at the University of Virginia.

    2. Isaac Jefferson, Memoirs, 4; Madison Hemings, "Life Among the Lowly," Pike County Republican, March 13, 1873. A December 20, 1802 letter from Thomas Gibbons, a Federalist planter of Georgia, to Jonathan Dayton states that Sally Hemings "is half sister to his first wife." Similarly, a letter from Thomas Turner in the May 31, 1805 Boston Repertory states, "an opinion has existed . . . that this very Sally is the natural daughter of Mr. Wales, who was the father of the actual Mrs. Jefferson."

John Wayles was born in Lancaster, Lancashire, England January 31,1715. John died 23 May 1773 in The Forest, Charles City Co., Virginia, at 57 years of age.

He married three times. He married Martha Eppes in Henrico County, Virginia, ca 1746. Martha is the daughter of Col. Francis Eppes. He married Tabitha Cocke. There is some question as to the surname of Tabitha. Bear in his "The Hemings Family of Monticello" says that her surname was Cocke , but in his book The Slave Children of Thomas Jefferson, Samuel H. Sloan says that it is more likely Cooke.

He married Elizabeth Lomax 1760. Elizabeth died 10 Feb 1761. In addition to being Sally Hemings' father, he was also her owner. John Wayles was a slave owner who fathered six children with his slave, Elizabeth "Betty" Hemings.

John Wayles and Martha Eppes had the following child:

2 i. Martha Wayles was born in Charles City Co., Virginia 19 Oct 1748. Martha died 6 Sep 1782 in Monticello, Albemarle, Virginia, at 33 years of age. She married twice. She married Bathurst Skelton 1766. Bathurst was born Jun 1744. Bathurst died bef 1 Sep 1771. His will was proved in Charles City County, Virginia on 1 September 1771.

She married Thomas Jefferson in The Forest, Charles City Co., Virginia, 1 Jan 1772. Thomas was born in Shadwell, Goochland, Virginia 2 Apr 1743. Thomas was the son of Peter Jefferson and Jane Randolph. Thomas died 4 Jul 1826 in Monticello, Albemarle, Virginia, at 83 years of age.

John Wayles and Tabitha Cocke had the following children:

Elizabeth Wayles. She married Francis Eppes. Francis is the son of Richard Eppes.

    Tabitha Wayles.

Anne Wayles. She married Henry Skipwith in Charles City Co., Virginia, 7 Jul 1773.

John Wayles and Elizabeth Hemings had the following children:

Robert Hemings was born 1762. Robert died 1819 in Richmond, Virginia, at 57 years of age. He married Dolly bef 1794. Robert was freed upon the death of his master 1794.

James Hemings was born 1765. James died 1801 at 36 years of age. James was freed upon the death of his master 1796. His death was a result of suicide and there is conjecture that heavy drinking was involved, based on a letter from William Evans to Thomas Jefferson in which Evans verified for Jefferson the way James died.

Thenia Hemings was born 1767. Thenia died aft 1795.

Critta Hemings was born 1769. Critta died aft 1827.

Peter Hemings was born 1770. Peter died aft 1827.

Sally Hemings was born in Guinea Plantation, Cumberland, Virginia 1773. Sally died 1835 in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia, at 62 years of age.

After the death of his first wife, Martha Eppes (the mother of Mrs. Jefferson), John Wayles married two more times; he married secondly to Mary Cocke by whom he had one [name unknown] daughter who died young; John Wayles married a third time, on 3, January 1760 to Elizabeth Lomax, with whom he had three daughters. After the death of Elizabeth Lomax (28 May 1763), Wayles took the half-black half-white slave Betty Hemings as his concubine and had six children by her. Betty Hemings was mentioned in the will of John Wayles, thus providing evidence that she really was his mistress and not merely his slave.

The first husband of Elizabeth Lomax was Reuben Skelton - he was the brother of Martha Jefferson's first husband, Bathurst Skelton; thus Martha Wayles Skelton's brother-in-law was her stepmother's first husband.

Ancestry: English; Martha Jefferson's father was an English immigrant. Her maternal great-great grandparents Francis Eppes and his wife Frances emigrated from England to Virginia sometime before 1659.

-------------------- John Wayles was Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson's father, Thomas Jefferson's father-in-law.

Elizabeth Skelton Wayles died a little more than a year after her marriage to John Wayles, on 10 February 1761; they had no children.[1] After the death of his third wife Wayles took his slave Elizabeth Hemings as his mistress, according to several sources.

Jefferson." John Wayles was born in Lancaster, Lancashire, England January 31,1715.

    Married three times.

    1. Martha Eppes Wayles who died within three weeks of her daughter Martha's birth.
    2. A Miss Cocke who bore four daughter, three of whom, Elizabeth, Tabitha and Anne who grew to maturity.
    3. Elizabeth Lomax, widow of Reuben Skelton, who survived only eleven months after her marriage to John Wayles.
Also fathered Sally Hemmings 1773 by a slave mistress Elizabeth 'Betty' Hemmings after his wife died.

"As a prelude to the Virginia Declaration of Religous Freedom, please remember it was Edward Carter of Blenheim, youngest of Secretary John, who made a compact with his neighbor, Thomas Jefferson, to have Primogeniture done away with just before the Revolution. He was not going to leave everything to his Gambling, no good son! The War saved them from having to push the controversial subject thru the Burgess!

  12. 20.  William Farrar Descendancy chart to this point (7.Judith3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Martha1) was born Abt 1718, Farrar's Island, Chesterfield Co., Virginia; died 1788, Granville Co., North Carolina.

    Notes:

William Farrar (son of George Farrar and Judith Jefferson) was born Abt. 1718 in Farrar's Island, Chesterfield Co. Virginia, and died 1788 in Granville Co. North Carolina.

    Includes NotesNotes for William Farrar:
William Farrar was born in Henrico Co. Virginia and joined his father's family in their move to Mecklenburg Co. Virginia. He was a Sergeant in the French and Indian War, from Mecklenburg County under Major William Caldwell.

He later moved to Granville Co, North Carolina. While he remained loyal to Britain during the French and Indian War, his son George (and perhaps John as well) fought for independence in the American Revolution. After the Revolutionary War when most were struggling in an economic depression, William managed to prosper and increased his estate and livestock in Granville Co, NC.

William, son of George and Judith (Jefferson) Farrar, named first in his father's will, was probably the oldest living son as George, Jr. and Abel had predeceased their father. William married twice. First to Winifred Clark and second, in 1780, to Lucy Medley who is named in his will, probated in August of 1788.

On Aug. 5, 1760 he bought 100 acres on North side of Allen's Creek, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, very near brother Thomas Farrar and James Clark. In 1764 he was listed as a tythable in the St. James Parish of Mecklenburg - 1 person, 450 acres. Another land purchase of 200 acres is recorded in 1766. In 1780 he had 580 acres. In the 1782 Virginia Census he is listed in Mecklenburg Co., in the same district as his mother Judith Farrar, as the head of a family of 11 and 7 slaves. As he did not marry Lucy until 1780, his children would have been by his first wife, Winifred Clark. On May 10, 1781 he sold his land and in 1784 bought 500 acres in Granville County, North Carolina.

  13. 21.  Thomas Farrar Descendancy chart to this point (7.Judith3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Martha1) was born 10 Aug 1726, Farrar's Island, Chesterfield Co. Virginia; died Aft 1772, Carnesville, Franklin Co., Georgia.

    Notes:

Thomas Farrar (son of George Farrar and Judith Jefferson) was born August 10, 1726 in Farrar's Island, Chesterfield Co. Virginia, and died August 20, 1809 in Carnesville, Franklin Co. Georgia. He married Elizabeth Howard on Bef. 1756 in probably Mecklenburg Co. Virginia, daughter of Francis Howard and Dianah Hillsman.

    Includes NotesNotes for Thomas Farrar:
Thomas Farrar was born August 10, 1726, the fourth son of George Farrar and Judith Jefferson, at Farrar's Island, Chesterfield Co. Virginia. Both Thomas Farrar, and his younger first cousin (future U.S. President) Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) were named after their mutual grandfather, Thomas Jefferson II. Numerous decendants of Thomas Jefferson II were named after him long before his most illustrious grandson made the family name famous by writing the Declaration of Independence and serving two terms as President of the United States. It is not known what relationship, if any, existed between the president and his Farrar cousins.

Thomas and his brother, George Farrar, Jr., moved from Chesterfield Co. to Lunenburg Co. Virginia, which later became Mecklenburg Co., to join their uncle Field Jefferson (1702-1765). In 1749 Thomas Farrar is charged with a tithable for Thomas Akin, and soon became a planter who bought and sold a good deal of land. Patent books show that he patented 850 acres on a branch of Layton's Creek adjoining Lanier and Ellige in 1759 and 1772. His various land purchases totaled 1500 acres and show that he was a neighbor of the Howards, Moores, Clarkes, Laniers and Avary's, as well as his brothers and uncle Field Jefferson.
About 1756 Thomas Farrar married Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Francis Howard and Dianah Hillsman (Thomas' sister-in-law since abt 1740). Dianah Hillsman's second husband was Thomas Farrar's brother, George Farrar, Jr., who had become Elizabeth Howard's step-father when she was about four years old. Thomas and Elizabeth raised a large family.

His father George Farrar died in 1772, and Thomas with brothers William and John served as executors of the estate. Sections of George Farrar's will, dated March 16, 1772 in Mecklenburg Coounty, mentioning son Thomas Farrar:

"I desire that at the death of my loving WIFE my Negro fellow Dick may choose which he please for his master of those of my sons, THOMAS FARRAR, WILLIAM FARRAR or JOHN FARRAR.

Item: I give to my son THOMAS FARRAR two young Negroes Sam and Annie.

I do hereby constitute and appoint my sons THOMAS FARRAR and WILLIAM FARRAR the executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 16th day of March 1772."

Executed & proved 12 Oct 1772, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia
    *******
Thomas Farrar's first cousin, Thomas Jefferson, wrote the Declaration of Independence and was one of it signers July 4, 1776. The DAR shows that Thomas Farrar served as a Major during the Revolution. SAR lists him as a Patriot. The Governor commissioned him a Lt. Col. in 1802. Other records refer to him as Col. Thomas Farrar.

The 1782 Census of Heads Of Families in Virginia lists Thomas Farrar in Mecklenburg County. His household consisting of eleven white persons and ten black persons (slaves). His mother Judith Farrar is listed as Head of her household nearby consisting of one white person (Judith, age 84) and four black persons (slaves). Thomas' brother William Farrar lived beside their mother. John Farrar resided nearby (Thomas' brother?)

Wife Elizabeth Howard died in 1782 in Richmond Co. Georgia.

The 1783 Census of Heads Of Families of Virginia lists Thomas Farrar in Amherst County. His household consisting of ten white persons and one black slave. Wife Elizabeth Howard had died the year before; a William Howard is a close neighbor.

The 1785 Census of Heads of Families of Virginia lists Thomas Farrar in Amherst County. His household consisting of eight "white souls." The property having one dwelling and two other buildings upon it. Neighbor William Howard's property listed as an Estate of the now deceased owner.

October 4, 1785, Thomas Farrar (of Spartanburg Co. South Carolina) bought from William Dickson (of Duptin Co. NC) for 60 pounds NC money 300 acres on head branch of Fairforest Creek middle grounds of Tyger River and Pacolate River, bordering John Prince. This land a grant of Oct. 26, 1767 George III via Governor William Tryon of NC to William Dickson; recorded in Mecklenburg Co. NC and on April 28, 1773 in South Carolina. (Is this record Thomas or his son Thomas??--several more land records...)

The 1787 Personal Property Tax List of Mecklenburg Co. Virginia named the Head of Household, males 16 years and older, names of slaves, and the number of horses and cattle owned. Thomas Farrar (age 60 at the time) is listed with two white males age 16-21. They are sons Abner (19 years) and Thomas (17 years); one slave over 16 years, and seven slaves under 16 years; names listed: Pat, Jim, Nelson, Edmund, Charles, Ephraim, Billy and Nan. Two horses and seven cattle also owned. Son Abel Farrar, 16-21 years old at the time, is listed at the nearby farm of Carter Clark, along with his three slaves; Jack, Jim and Fan, and six horses and ten cattle.

The Patent Land Survey Book D 1788-1799 of South Carolina lists Thomas Farrar as owning many thousands of acres of land in Greenville County, SC; along the Saluda River, Oil Camp Creek, Beaverdam Creek, Green River, and Gap Creek. (Is this Thomas or Thomas Jr.??)

In 1806 Thomas Farrar deeded to his grandson, Francis Howard Farrar age 5 (son of Abner), any land he might win in the Georgia Land Lottery.

At the end of his life Thomas Farrar lived with his son, Abner Farrar, who owned a large plantation on a branch of the Broad River, about two miles from Carnesville, Franklin Co. Georgia. Abner's family included his wife, Catherine Carter, and Thomas's grandchildren, (ages as of 1809) Elizabeth 17, Jesse Carter 14, Thurza 11, Francis Howard 8, Diannah Hillsman 3, and newborn William Malone.

Thomas Farrar died at his son Abner's home on August 20, 1809. OBITUARY OF THOMAS FARRAR

"Died in Franklin County, on Sunday the 20th inst. (ultimate) Mr. Thomas Farrar, aged 83 years and 10 days. He was a cousin of the late President Thomas Jefferson. He expressed a great anxiety to be free from the burden of life and appeared to have no dread of death to his last moments. A few minutes before he expired he sat up in bed and possessed his mental faculties. He believed that all things were made for the glory of God and anything he could do could not change his purpose; he was averse to vice and revered morality, but thought there was no reality in enthusiastic religion."
