From Hwy 41 you will travel about a mile down the Dry Fork Road.
You will see Stowe Lane on your left.
You will turn on to Stowe Lane and follow this road which will turn into a farm road..you will pass some barns and a Stowe Cemetery on your left (keep going), you will then come to a house, it is white, looks like two houses joined together with another house close beside it (in the summer this house is used for the Mexican workers to live in)...you will keep to the right , pass that house and drive across a creek. After you cross the creek you will go on maybe 5 or 6 car lengths and stop. You will then walk across a field on your right and into the woods where the cemetery is located. I call this the Joel T. Stowe Cemetery since he is the oldest person buried there. This is where William Addison Wells is buried: his tombstone reads:

Now, lets go back to Hwy 41
Again you will go down the Dry Fork, as before just under a mile. You will see Johnson Road on your left. You will not go down Johnson Road, this is just a starting point. Directly across the Dry Fork Road from Johnson Road is a field. You will need to cross this field to the woods, at the woods stay to the right and you will see the cemetery shortly. In the last year the woods have been cut down so now the cemetery is right in the edge of the woods. I call this the Davis/Wells Cemetery since the Davis Family were the first to be buried here. (the Davis family are my husbands family). This is where Lelia E. Stowe Wells is buried; Her tombstone reads:

It has been quite some time since I was in this cemetery...when we were there the Davis family was buried in the woods and the Wells graves were in grass over 6 foot tall. My husband went into the grass to read the stones to me and I couldn't even see him. There were close to 20 graves there and some, I don't know how many had been moved away.

Hey girl, I can't get off this site of yours , love it. I found where I made a major screw up. I sent you a e-mail about James Fletcher Reynolds that said he is buried at Highland Burial Park. (WRONG) I got him and Joseph Cephus (Ceph) Reynolds mixed up. Ceph is buried at Highland. I went over and saw that stone a few weeks ago. All his information is correct. Fletcher only lived to be 33 years old and it is believed that he is buried in the Matthew Clay Wells cemetery since his parents are buried there. His wife is probably buried there too. She died a year after him.

Mr. Joseph Cephus Reynolds, 82, of 268 Gray Street, Danville, VA went to be with his Lord in his sleep. He had been in ill health for several years. A native of Callands, VA, he was the son of the late Cephus Wilson Reynolds and Tabitha Wells Reynolds. He spent most of his life in Danville where he served as High Constable until his retirement. He was a member of County Line Christain Church. He first married Mary Ellen Barbour, who died many years ago. He was later married to Dora Ann Rickman. Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by two daughters Mrs. Christina Love Pittman of Newport News, VA and Mrs. Anne R. Reynolds of Richmond, VA, one sister Mrs. Emma Reynolds of Callands, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Townes Memorial Chapel in Danville. Was born in a cabin on John Reynolds Place, Callands, Va

Charlie Wade Reynolds: From 1946 until his death he was a
farmer, then a merchant who owned Charlie's Store in Grady,
Va. From 1915-1945 (from the age of 27) he lived on the
Swanson Place and Charlie Wells' Place.

For a year or two after he was married he and Annie lived
on his father's (John Henry Reynolds) farm, which was sold
after his death. The cabin was very cold in the winter and
in bad shape.

Charlie, Annie, Basil & their baby Edith, Charlie's
sisters, Callie & Tabbie and brothers Bogey & Silas then
moved to the Swanson Place which was just across the road.
Tabbie died from TB while living there. She was in her
20's and was engaged to a man from Danville. She was
buried on the Lee Reynolds place near her parents. They
stayed there until about 1936. The rest of the children
were born while they lived there (7). It was a beautiful
place surrounded with Cherry Trees. The children played in
the Turkeycock Creek and the woods.

Uncle Allen and Aunt Charlotte lived on the place too.
They were an old Black couple who had been slaves when they
were children. Annie said that she couldn't have "done it"
without Aunt Charlotte. Annie told many stories about Aunt
Charlotte and how she helped care for the children. Aunt
Charlotte lived in a cabin and cooked over a fireplace and
carried water in a churn on top of her head up a hill from
the spring. She also made ash bread, so called, because
the dough was placed on a flat rock and covered with ashes
and placed in the fire where it cooked. You then brushed
or cut off the ashes and ate the bread. J. W. Swanson
built his house where the cabin had stood (residence in
1930).

Elise Wells Caldwell, age 100, passed away on January 19, 2018, at her home at Greenspring Village in Springfield, Virginia.

Born in Callands, Virginia on December 22, 1917, Elise was the
youngest of eleven children born to Charles Wesley Wells and Ida Hankins Wells.

Elise was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, John A. Caldwell, her parents, and her ten siblings. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Alexandria for 65 years.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Loretta M. Caldwell; three grandsons, Brian (Elizabeth), Keith and Michael Caldwell; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial service and inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

MARTINSVILLE - Mary Mildred Marlow Johnston, 89, of 225 Pine St., Martinsville, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.

Born July 26, 1915, in Callands, she was the daughter of Roy Howard Marlow and Mary Wells Marlow. She had a step-mother, Catherine Rigney Marlow.

She was a member of County Line Christian Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard L. Johnston.

Survivors include one daughter, Margie J. McCrickard of Hurt; one son, Ronald Johnston of Altavista; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Bernice J. Atkinson and two brothers, Eugene Marlow and Russell Marlow.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at County Line Christian Church by Minister Dean Ashby. Burial was in County Line Christian Church Cemetery.

Born in the Stoney Mill Community of Pittsylvania County, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas Howard Elliott and Serelza Wells Elliott. He had lived most of his life in Bachelors Hall.

He was a carpenter and worked for P L Anderson for 17 years. Later he worked for a number of years with John Daniel Construction Company.

He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Poquoson Tribe 124 of Red Men.

Survivors include his wife Edith Lyons Parsons Elliott of the home, four daughters Barbara Kelsey Elliott Kirks of Bowie, MD, and Joyce Jeanette Elliott Nanney, Rebecca Jean Elliott Boulware and Patricia Dale Elliott Curry, all of Danville, two sons Alvin Randolph Elliott of Sunset Beach, NC and Ronnie Ray Elliott of Kernersville, NC.

Also surviving are four sisters Lucille Elliott Hayden and Iris Elliott Shelton, both of Chatham, VA, Cordie Elliott Shelton of Danville and Irma Elliott Motley of Arcadia, CA, one brother Van Elliott of Westover Hills, VA, 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Edd Calhoun officiating.

Graveside services were conducted by the Poquoson Tribe 124 Red Men.

Interment was in Highland Burial Park in Danville.

She is survived by two sisters, Cordie Shelton of Danville and Irma Motley of Florida, and one brother, Van Elliott, of Danville. Other survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Jimmy McMann Hayden.

Graveside services for Mrs. Hayden were held at Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Jerry Smith officiating.

Barker Funeral Home in Danville served the family.

Mr. Van Elliott, Sr., 88, formerly of 108 Brook Circle, Danville, went to be with his Lord at the Danville Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Thomas Howard Elliott and Serelza Wells Elliott of Danville, VA.

He lived most of his life in the Westover Hills community, he was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from the City of Danville. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church where he was a superintendent and Sunday school teacher, a Boy Scout Master and Charter Member of Westover Sertoma Club.

He was predeceased by his loving spouse, Dorothy Wright Elliott whom he was married to for 65 years. Survivors include daughters Janice Elliott Richardson and husband, Berkley Richardson, Susan Elliott Ricketts and husband, H T Ricketts, Martha Elliott Knick and husband, Gary Knick, son, Van Elliott, Jr., and wife, Nickie Elliott, sisters Cordie Mae Elliott Shelton, Erma Motley, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Lucille Hayden and Iris Shelton, brothers, Calvin, Curtis, Cecil, and Hassell Elliott.

Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Kathleen Monge were held at Fairview United Methodist Church.

Interment followed in the Schoolfield Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion 1097.

and Mary Finney Wells. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Dove; and two
brothers, Thomas Wells Sr. and Bernard Wells.

She retired from the office of the Commissioner of Revenue
of Henry County, where she worked for 55 years.

She was a member of Chatham Heights Christian Church and
played the piano.

Surviving are her husband, Clifton M. Clark of the home;
two daughters, Kathy Clark Stephens of Martinsville and
Marsha Clark Neely of Axton; a sister, Christine Kirks of
Bassett; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Norris Funeral
Services in Martinsville with Minister Alan Vaughan
officiating. Burial will be at the County Line Christian
Church cemetery in Axton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at
the funeral home.

900 Robert Edwin and Nannie Richardson Kendrick Reynolds.
They were married on 3 Feb 1934. Nannie, the d/o William
Thomas Kendrick and Mary Mays, and Edwin, the son of John
Levi Reynolds and Emma. After their marriage they moved
into a one-room cabin on John Levi's place and produced
their first son Wesley 20 Jan 1935. That spring they moved
about a mile to a one-room cabin, with a loft and lean-to,
on Witchia A. Finney's farm. They farmed as tenant tobacco
farmers for about 12 years. They used a black pot to make
lye soap, heat water for baths and to can foods.
"Whitewash" was brought from a pit nearby and 'daubed' on
the inside of the cabin walls. Wewin cut his wheat with a
hand cradle (sic), and a group of men with a 'combine'
would come through the county each year and 'thrash' the
wheat to be ground for flour, hog feed, etc. Cider making,
corn 'shuckings, and 'pig pickins' were fall activities.
Three other children, Janice, Jackie and Betty Lou, were
born there. Those cold winter nights caused a lot of
snuggling. The children slept in the loft and sometimes
snow would blow in, between the logs and would cover the
bed and floor. In 1947 Edwin bought an 80 acre farm, with
a 4 room frame house and no electricity or plumbing, about
a mile south, from Johnny Fuller, with the help of an
uncle, Witchia Finney. In 1948 Edwin went to work at Lee
Telephone Co. Edwin retired at age 62 and he and Nannie
lived out their lives on the place, in much the same
life-style as in the beginning, until their deaths 7 Aug
1997 and Nannie's in 3 Aug 1999.

Russell "Cotton" Reynolds, 82, of Chatham, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, and was the son of the late Samuel Jackson Reynolds and Lenna Blair Reynolds.

He was predeceased by his wife, Hilda Wright Reynolds.

He is survived by one son, Russell Dwight Reynolds of Chatham; one daughter, Elizabeth R. Yeatts of Sandy Level; one brother, Suter D. Reynolds of Chatham; five sisters, Lucille R. Koehler of Cincinnati, Ohio, Emma Sue R. Mayhew of Farmville, Jean R. Goad of Franklin County, Jewel R. Rigney of Franklin County, and Frances R. Rigney of Sandy Level; five grandchildren, Evie R. Moore, Jill A. Reynolds, Stacey Y. Yeatts, Jason Yeatts and Matthew Yeatts and two great-granddaughters, Sierra Duffer and Hanna Moore.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Reynolds and one sister, Neva R. Reynolds and one grandson, Rusty Yeatts.

Mr. Reynolds was a retired carpenter and a member of Greenpond Baptist Church and had served on the building committee, and was serving on the pulpit committee. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II.

Funeral services were conducted at Greenpond Baptist Church on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. R. G. Rowland. Burial was at the Greenpond Baptist Church Cemetery.

Scott Funeral Home of Chatham was in charge of the arrangements.

Movher lived to be 93. She was so meek and patience with everyone. She worked so hard all her life, cooking, milking and taking care of all her family. Her mom died when she was about 12 so she quit school to take care of her brothes and dad. After her dad married again, her stepmom insisted she return to school. She went as far as the school taught. Her teacher told her that she had taught her every thing she knew. When she married , her husband's mom had also died so she took care of her father-n-law and two brother -n-laws and three sister-n-laws. Of course they pitched in and helped. She had 9 children. The oldest boy was killed in WWII. When most of her children were grown, she started raising grandchildren. I was the first! Everyone that knew her loved her. I still think of her several times every day.

Stella Frances Reynolds Nelson

DANVILLE - Stella Frances Reynolds Nelson, age 87, died at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center on Jan. 23, 2009.

She had made the center her home since April 2007.

Born in Callands, on June 11, 1921, she was the fourth child of nine, born to Charlie Wade Reynolds and Annie Eliza Staydon Reynolds.

She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, George Thomas Nelson of New York City, where she made her home until her retirement.

She moved to Danville to be near her family.

A few months later her brother, Kenneth, also retired and moved to Danville and Stella moved in with him until his death.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Basil Reynolds, Kenneth Reynolds, A. Wilbur Reynolds, and Nelson Reynolds and two sisters, Bernice R. Turlington and Edith R. Bullington.

She is survived by a foster son, Robert Nelson and wife, Cathy and their son, Neal of Mebane, N.C.; a special niece, Katherine Nelson of Chatham, and her two sons, Daniel and Joshua Coward of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Ann R. Coward and Nancy R. Hundley of Callands; special niece, Sandra Reynolds of Callands; a brother-in-law, Ralph Nelson and wife, Eileen of Gouldsboro, Pa.; sister-in-law, Frances Reynolds of Callands; nephew, Spencer Bullington of Richmond; great-nephew, Scott Reynolds of Callands; two great-nieces, Deena Reynolds of Maryland, and Lauren Beniwirtz of R.I.

Numerous nieces and nephews, who loved being in the company of their Aunt Stella, also survive her. She also leaves a dear, dear friend, Dianne Beverly, who has been like a daughter to her.

Stella never had children of her own but her home was always open to her nieces and nephews and several lived with her for years.

Stella had a wonderful witty, loving personality, which like a magnet drew people to her. She and brother, Ken, did a lot of entertaining for their large family and had many reunions in their home. She enjoyed cooking, reading, working jigsaw puzzles, and gardening before her health failed and also taking care of her cats and dogs that she adopted through the years.

Funeral services will be conducted at Scott Funeral Home Chapel Monday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Ben Barbour officiating. Burial will be at County Line Christian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home an hour before the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the charity of choice.

His leaving has left an empty spot within my heart
where no one can ever take his place
but thank God for the precious memories
and a mind that can conjure up his face.

He filled many shoes for me as I was growing up.
That of an uncle, a close friend,
a dear brother, and so many times a loving father.
To friends his ear, he was always willing to lend.

He saw beauty where others saw none,
His talent as an artist was well known,
He heard music when some heard nothing,
He was misunderstood and sometimes walked alone.

He would listen to every ones problems
and not a criticism would he offer
but let you talk your way through them
until the problems seemed softer.

The children remember him for all the silly times
he made them laugh, these memories we can never rob
for he loved to tease dogs and children and ask,
"Do you think the rain will hurt the rhubarb?"

He loved and cared for so many of us
with his gentleness of a butterfly.

I thought of the story I told you about Allen Wilbur
Reynolds, my uncle the painter. You took a picture of the
painting in Bassett. It's the one that has a boy sitting
on a horse. This was at Dr. Richardson's office in Mt.
Valley, VA. They was Wilbur. He was running in the hall
at school (Callands school) bare-foot and got a huge
splinter in his foot. When he got home his brother, Basil
I. Reynolds (was killed in WWII) took him to the Dr.
leading him on horseback. The heavy man was the Dr. I
meant to take you up to see the Dr's place. It was
restored by Max Kendall and sold to the present owner who
lives there. It's only a mile above CLCC. Wilbur was an
interesting fellow, very handsome and very talented. He
taught himself to paint and also to play the mandolin. He
was very good at both. He had a crazy since of humor and
his best friend from childhood, Clifton Aaron was just as
crazy. Clift lived in Roanoke and only visited Callands in
the summer as a child. He came to stay with his Aunt
Tabbie Aaron Coward but usually stayed with our family.
The two of them learned to play musical instruments from
mail order instructions. They build a small cabin with a
fireplace and slept there and cooked over the fireplace
when they were kids. They visited each other a couple of
times a year after they married and always sat around
playing the guitar and mandolin. They mailed an old dirty
sock back and forth to each other for years on Christmas
and birthdays. They were like two crazy kids all their
lives. They both died young. Wilbur was only 62 and Clift
was younger that that. Wilbur also build an airplane. Of
course it wouldn't fly but it was quite the conversation
piece, since it was covered in canvas and he had it hanging
in a tree. One person could sit in it. He loved to tease
children by pretending he had a baby chick in his hands and
a lot of other crazy things. A very good friend of his,
George Wells, who played the guitar with him had a
recording made into an album in memory of Wilbur. They had
taped themselves often and the tape has children talking in
the background but it is a great keepsake in memory of
Wilbur.

Nelson had no children but helped raise eleven. Four from
his first marriage and seven from his second marriage. He
retired from the Air Force in 1967 and then worked on the
same base, doing the same job for another 25 years.
Mary, Nelson's first wife, had three children when they married. Janice, Buddy (Nelson), and Joe. Their last name was Perry, but they took the Reynolds name until Mary and Nelson divorced. But before that Janice had a child out of wedlock that they raised. Can't remember his name but it was a boy, Mary took him with her when she and Nelson parted ways, He was 8 or 10 years old. Nelson then married Peggy who had 6 children. Turns out he adopted the three youngest. Richard, Tony and Shelby. One of the older ones, Newell ended up moving back in with them until Nelson's death. The other two, Michael and Sharon didn't spend much time with them. Anthony (Tony) married a girl in the military, she had a baby, Phillip and couldn't keep him with her so Tony brought him home to Nelson and Peggy. They raised him and Nelson was absolutely crazy about him. This young man's last name is Reynolds. He went into the Air Force, like his papa. The family were farmers. He left home and went to Maryland to work in a factory, met the lady he married and joined the navy. His brother Melvin went with him to Maryland but came home for a visit and never went back but joined the military and served as a Flight Maintenance Gunner in the 483 Bomb Group from April 23, 1943 until Oct. 5, 1945. He flew 36 missions on a B17 Bomber and received a silver Star, Bronze Star as well as numerous medals during his career. He married Rachel Ann Reynolds. Had 4 sons who also served in the military. He also had one daughter. Their father, William M. Coward was a Constable who was shot in the line of duty at Grady store in Callands. Va. He has a stone in Chatham, Va along with other fallen officers of the court. Hassell's brother Fred was married and had 4 sons. Justice Edward Coward never married.

CALLANDS - Melvin Rupert Coward, 73, 1012 Barn Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 27, 1997, at his residence.
Born June 23, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William M. Coward and Tabitha Aaron Coward.
He was married to Rachel Reynolds Coward, who survives.
He was a member of County Line Christian Church, and was retired from furniture factories in Martinsville.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force as a flight maintenance gunner in the 483rd Bomb Group. He flew 35 missions on a B-17 Bomber over Northern Italy.
He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and numerous other medals during his military career.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Tony Coward of Collinsville, Michael Coward of Danville and Perry Coward of Callands; a daughter, Robin Coward of Callands; two brothers, Fred Coward of Danville and Justice E. Coward of Callands; and four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. J.D. Hunt III.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, Chatham, and other times at the residence in Callands.

Whitey would like for everyone to know that his work here on earth is done. He received a call from his Lord and Savior on the 19th of June,2017 at 12:05 a.m., a sort of offer that he couldn't refuse, for an appointment for which he will not be returning. This divine appointment offered "out of this world" benefits, including a reunion with loved ones, but more importantly, an opportunity to meet his Jesus face-to-face and to offer Him unending praise. His new home is built on the streets of gold, where there is overflowing peace, joy beyond human comprehension, and eternal rejoicing. Pain, heartache, sickness, regret and suffering are not present, but eternal bliss is abundantly guaranteed. He departed his earthly life from the Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home, a peaceful place of rest before his final journey - his ascension into Heaven. Whitey was truly a Valentine, having been born on February 14, 1920, in Callands, Va. to the late Ora Isabelle Aaron Reynolds Wehry and William Edgar Reynolds. As a youngster born during the Great Depression, he began delivering groceries at a very young age, at which time the grocer nicknamed him "Whitey" because of his white hair. This nickname stuck with him for over nine decades, and few even knew him by his given name of Harold. Whitey graduated top of his class from high school, and lived most of his life in Danville, Va. until April 2017 when he relocated to Brookdale Assisted Living in Burlington, N.C. to be closer to his daughter. He retired from Dan River Mills as an Overseer in the Riverside Division, and was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church in Danville, Va. He always took pride in his yard, and enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music, Joyce's fabulous cooking, his cozy home, a good nap, and the Atlanta Braves, but most endearing to him was spending precious time with his family. Due to contracting Tuberculosis at the age of 21, he never imagined he would marry nor have children, but God saw differently. While recently hospitalized and reflecting back on his life, he told his daughter, "Life has been so good" and "I'm going to meet my Jesus". Indeed, these are priceless words of comfort. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving son, Mark Anthony Reynolds (whose cremains will be entombed with him); a baby sister, Jacqueline, age 3 months; sister, Ruby Mae, age 6; half-sister, Dorothy Lorraine Atkins; and half-brother, Jack Reynolds. Whitey was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his soulmate and wife of 67 years, Joyce Adams Reynolds of Burlington, N.C.; daughter, Carol Reynolds Wynn (Mike) of Mebane, N.C.; grandchildren, Ryan and Emilee Woods of Mebane, N.C.; grand-daughter, Ashley Reynolds Barta (Jim) of Hutchinson, Kan.; great-grandson Lucas Barta of Hutchinson, Kan.; half-sister, Dorothy Jackson of Virginia Beach, Va.; and half-brother, Bill Reynolds (Annie Mae) of Danville, Va. The family would like to thank the phenomenal and compassionate staff of 2A Cardiac Telemetry at Cone Health/Alamance Regional Medical Center, as well as all of the "angels on earth" who so lovingly cared for him at Hospice Home. Your loving care will never be forgotten. A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park (North Main side) on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at 2 pm. Ryland T. Wells, 78, of 78 Garden Drive, Ridgeway, died Oct. 1, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Wells was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater. He was awarded five Battle Stars and an Arrowhead for the D-Day Invasion.

Born May 9, 1924, in Callands, he was the son of the late Leslie Stone Wells and Elsie E. Aaron Wells. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Y. Wells.

He retired from LADD Furniture Co. with 25 years of service, and he had been a member of County Line Christian Church for 65 years.

Surviving are one son, Michael Wells of Ridgeway; a brother, Robert Wells of Martinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. J.D. Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today.

Mrs. Edith Jefferson Nester of 657 Chatmoss Court Extension, Martinsville, VA went to be with her Lord at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

She was born in Callands, VA to the late Wade Keene Jefferson and the late Maude Wells Jefferson. She graduated from Callands High School and retired from the DuPont Company with 25 years service.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Collinsville and the Golden Circle Sunday School class.

Her husband, Lloyd Alvin Nester, died in 1994.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Nester Pegram and Shelby Jean Nester Richardson, both of Martinsville and Mrs. Mike (Jo) Reedy of Roanoke, VA, one sister, Bernice Jefferson Ponton of Martinsville, a brother Bill Jefferson of Rocky Mount, NC, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at McKee-Stone Funeral Services chapel. Dr. Calvin Rains officiated.

Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.

Bernice Jefferson Ponton, 80, of Martinsville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on Aug. 5, 1924, to Wade Keen Jefferson and Annie Maude Wells Jefferson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin D. Ponton, and two sisters, Edith J. Nester and Lucille J. Fuller.
She graduated from Callands High School and attended Phillips School of Business in Lynchburg. She was a member of the Tabernacle Christian Church in Callands.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine Bullock of Martinsville and Elizabeth Mosley of Bassett; two sons, Marvin D. Ponton Jr. of Lynchburg and Jeff H. Ponton of Henry; one brother, Bill Jefferson of Rocky Mount; four granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Mrs. Ruby Parrish Thompson, age 90 of Gretna, VA went to be with her Lord at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, VA.

She was born in Pittsylvania County, VA and was a daughter of the late Willie Smith Parrish and Algie Wells Parrish.

She was also predeceased by her husband James Andrew Thompson, Jr., one son James (Jimmy) Thompson III, one brother William Kermit Parrish and one sister Janice Parrish.

She was an active member of Riceville Baptist Church where she served in many capacities, including as a Sunday School Teacher and a member of WMU. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers, sewing and spending time with her family.

She is survived by one son Bill Thompson and wife Debbie Thompson of Gretna, one daughter Kathy Puckett and husband Don Haas of Houston, TX, one sister Betty Stump and husband David Stump of Ringgold, VA, one sister-in-law Ann Parrish of Danville, VA, a daughter-in-law, Linda Thompson of Gretna, seven grandchildren Amanda Thompson Hines, James (Andy) Thompson IV, Jason Puckett, Jessica Puckett Anderson, William Lee Thompson, Jr., Adam Thompson and Wade Quarles and 13 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted at the Carl O Moran Memorial Garden by Reverend Shelton Miles.
