Harold died at age 30. He had contracted what was later determined to be the flu, and his local doctor treated him with a new 'wonder drug' called Sulphathysol. He reacted to it and the doctor doubled the dose instead of taking him off of the drug. His kidneys collapsed and he died. Harold was a Baptist Minister, as was his father. When Harold died, his wife, Sara Hughey was 6 weeks pregnant with their second child.

John Harold Jester enlisted in the Army and was discharged honorably after serving 4 years. He was trained as a medical technologist and was stationed in San Francisco, California. He married Donna Jean Bono in the early 1960's and was divorced from her prior to 1965 when he married Mary Frances Reynolds. He planned to go to veterinary school and practice with Harold Tinsley, who was his mentor, but was not accepted to Georgia Tech, which was the only veterinary program who accepted students from Virginia, at that time. He worked as a medical technologist in Danville, Virginia and in Martinsville, Virginia. Jack lived with his son, Harold Thomas Jester, II until his death in 2010.
