Have discovered Thomas in the DAR Patriot Index, b. 19 June
1753, d. 9 Feb 1825. Marriage Record in Early Virginia
Marriages by Southern Book Co., 1953, lists marriage as 21
Nov 1771. A Family Bible of Thomas' son, John W. Carter,
gives Thomas' parents as Thomas Carter and Mary Kilpatrick.
Their marriage is in the Douglas Register, page 14,
indicating that the marriage was recorded on pages 21-26 of
the Parish Register of Goochland begun ANNO 1756 by William
    Douglas, Minister.

Thomas Carter Jr. was named as 'second son' in his father's will, received a yearling calf, and probably lived on his father's land until about 1730. In Sept. 1730, he received a land grant on Licking Hole and Bolings Creeks, described as 'on branches of said river, falling into the Rock Castle
lowgrounds'. This land was located north of the James River, but was directly across from the Carter properties on Muddy Creek. In 1736 Thomas Jr. was granted land along Turkey Cocke Creek in what became Cumberland Co. He willed this land to his eldest son, Thomas. The will was made in Goochland Co. in February 1760, and filed there in April 1763. Nothing is known of his first marriage(s)-but he had married a Mary Killipatrick in 1751. His will also noted then wife, Mary, and sons; John, Josiah, Baynes, and 'my three younger daughters'; Mary Dawson, Judith and Susanna Carter. Josiah Carter inherited a 150 acre tract, part of the land north of the James River; his brother John received an adjacent 125 acres of the same 'Ballows land'

Both Thomas Sr. and Jr. are shown on the 1787 Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA

Settling in the British North American Colonies
From Benjamin Franklin, who wrote in 1751: ?So vast is the
Territory of North America that it will require many Ages
to settle it fully and, till it is fully settled, Labour
will never be cheap here, where no Man continues long a
Labourer for others, but gets a Plantation of his own?.

In the 1700s the British colonies in America grew rapidly
in population and wealth. A former, somewhat crude, society
acquired an elite that was somewhat polished and numerous.
Trade and cities flourished. The 250,000 settlers who had
lived in the newly formed mainland colonies in 1700, became
    1,500,000 by 1750 and 2,250,000 by 1775, only 25 years
    later.

Perhaps it is difficult to comprehend the times and events
occurring in the very middle of the 18th century. George II
was king of England, Scotland & Ireland, and was Hanoverian
(German) in origin. In Europe, the waltz was becoming its
most popular dance, and the first golf club, in Edinburgh,
Scotland, was just 6 years old. In the colonies, the 5
major centers of affluence were Boston, New York,
Philadelphia, Charleston, and Newport. The elite wore wigs,
and slavery was an important part of the economy. The city
of Richmond, Virginia was started in 1737, while Charlotte,
North Carolina was just being settled in 1750. Benjamin
Franklin was working on his lightning conductor. The Ohio
River and Tennessee were just beginning to be explored. The
beginnings of the American Revolution, the conflict where
the colonists won their independence from Great Britain,
were still 13 years away. George Washington was 18 years
old, and Thomas Jefferson -- seven. The birth of the United
States of America was 26 years away.

Note: Goochland was formed from Henrico in 1728 and
Cumberland was formed from southern portion of Goochland in
    1749.
Thomas's Will names Robert as his oldest son and Thomas as
    his second.

    http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Sarah_Cocke_%282%29.
Death Cert. lists her death as before Jan 20 1746-47 in Henrico--why? DEATH: Goochland Co. OB 7, p. 402; Jordan vs. Cox in 1754 Richard Perrin received a patent on 14 Mar 1672 for 740 acres, 1 rod, 24 perches. [Va Patent Bk 6:445]. 474 acres of this was called "World's End" and had been granted Mathew Edlow on 2 Oct 1656. In 1691, he deeded to Thomas Farrar and Katherine his wife (who was said Richard's daughter) 256 acres of "World' s End" "where I now live" bounded by the [James] River and William Ballow. In his will dated 16 Mar 1694/5, Richard Perrin bequeathed "my house and land commonly called "World's End", 400 acres with 200 acres fronting river, to my dear wife Katherine for life, and at her death to daughter Sarah. . . ." This daughter Sarah married William Cocke 2 Dec 1695.William Cocke made his will 5 Nov 1717 and left "all my lands" to his son William. However, William died without issue (having had children, but they predeceased him). His widow, Judith (Stewart) Cocke married 2nd to Francis Redford and received her dower in the above "World's End". The balance went to William Cocke's sisters: Temperance (who m. Abraham Bayly)[Bailey]; Catherine (who m. John Burton) but died young leaving an eldest son John; Mary (m. John Redford); and Sara h (a half-sister who m. 1st William Cox & 2nd Thomas Jordan).Judith, widow of Wm. Cocke, now wife of Francis Redford, relinquished her rights in the tract to William Randolph on 5 Aug 1747. [Henrico Will & Deed Bk 1737-1750, p. 297]Rev. William Finney who had married a sister of William Cocke (owner of 256 acres of World's End by virtue of his marriage to Katharine Perrin) ended up with part of "World's End" which he bequeathed his son William in his will dated 3 Feb 1726.[Henrico Will & Deed Bk 1725-1737, p. 104]. William Finney, the son, sold a small piece of land (possibly part of World's End) to Abraham Bayly [Bailey] which is mentioned in a deed from Peter Cock Bailey of Mecklenburg County, VA to Francis Pearce in 1788 which transferrs two tracts, the second of which is "five acres, being the parcel of land purchased of Willliam Finne and adjoining the first." [Henrico Dd Bk 2:663] The first tract was 47 acres whereon Abraham Bailey, grandfather of said Peter Cocke Bailey died. It began "on Cornelius 's Cr on S side and thence a south course of marked trees along Col. Heth's [Heath?] line to Peyton Randolph's line, thence along the said Randolph's line, a northeast course to William Gile's line, thence along the said Gile's line of marked trees a northwest course til it joins the land that was Joseph Bailey's; thence along the said line to where it begun."[Henrico Deed B k 1737-1750, p. 297.] On 26 Sept 1747, William Finney Gent to William Randolph, Gent. of Goochland Co for L960 [3 tracts]:1. 265 acres which was purchased of Thomas Farrar and Katharine [nee Perrin] his wife and John & Joseph Farrar their sons by William Finney, decd. father of the said William Finney conveyed to him by deed dated March 10, 1723.-2. also 400 acres, adj the 265 , purchased fr John Radford and Mary his wife, Thomas Jordan and Sarah his wife, and Abraham Bailey and Temperance his wife--the above sd. lying on the N side of James River in Henrico Co and was commonly called "World's End."-3. also 371 acres in same Co. adj Wm Eppes, the same being pt of a tract granted Thomas Cocke by patent dated Apr 20, 1687 and by him devised to Mary Finney, late mother of said William Finney. Sept 26, 1747. THIS 3rd tract is NOT PART OF WORLD'S END. So in 1747 William Randolph owned almost all, if not all of the origina l "World's End." For a time I thought it was a part of Chatsworth, but after seeing a survey of Chatsworth in the first plat book of Henrico County, I could see that Chatsworth was too far north and it was not on Cornelius Creek as World's End definitely was. The 1656 patent of Matthew Edlow referred to in Richard Perrin's patent does not appear in the Virginia Land Patent Books. The patent for Richard Perrin's land is mostly undecipherable. Most of the surrounding patents do not give accurate metes and bounds --just vaguely states "Westerly into the Woods" etc.

Book an ancestry 'Historical Southern families-vol 6" makes this Sarah to be his eldest daughter by a first wife, name unknown.

This John Carter was first married to Lucy (LNU)
"On 22 May 1770 John Carter and Josiah Carter of Pittsylvania County deeded [DB 10/51] to John Strang of Louisa County, for £90, a parcel of land lying in Goochland County on branches of Lickinghole and Bolings creek containing 275a. This is surely the land devised to these two sons of Thomas Carter in (32.) above. The deed contains the phrase "... said John Carter his wife and Josiah Carter their heirs executors administrators ..." and is signed by John Carter, Josiah Carter and Lucy Carter. Thus we have this John Carter with a wife named Lucy Carter and by inference an unwed Josiah Carter on this date."
    -- Dan Wallace

John married Winnifred Anthony 21 Nov 1771, Goochland Co., Virginia. Winnifred (daughter of Joseph Anthony, Sr. and Elizabeth Clark) was born 8 Apr 1765, Goochland, Virginia Colony; died 10 May 1855, Georgia. [Group Sheet]

Thos Carter Jr's LWT was written 14 Feb 1760 and was recorded in Goochland Co 19 Apr 1763. At the time the LWT was written Susannah was named to inherit 150a of her father's Turkey Cock Creek property; however, on 23 Oct 1761, Thos Carter sold this property to Joseph Jackson of Cumberland Co VA [DB3/208].

    February 2006
I believe that Susannah died before 1771 in Bedford CO VA or Fleming Co KY because Joseph was married to Nancy Ann Carroll by 1771. She was the daughter of Demse James Carroll and Frances Sanford. I have seem speculation that Susannah and Joseph went to KY and that they went to GA.
Two of Joseph's brothers John and Congrave went to KY and stayed. His sister Ann married Thomas Joel Embry and died in GA although Ann and Thomas were in Fauquier CO for a while.
At least three and possible four of Susannah's brothers wound up in GA. John. Thomas, and Josiah with Baynes a possibility.

Dr. Phillips is a History Professor at the Univ. of Cin.
Well before the war, Joseph Jackson, Jr., had begun to acquire secular stock by the most carinal of means: he had started a family. On August 27, 1760, he had married Susannah Carter, a distant cousin to the powerful tidewater family. Within three years, three sons--George, Joseph III, and Dempsey Carroll--were born to the Jacksons, followed two years later by another son, William. With this growing brood Jackson moved to Fauquier County and watched his sons grow to manhood....

  8. 13.  Josiah Carter Descendancy chart to this point (4.Thomas2, 1.Susanna1) was born 10 Feb 1746, Bedford, Virginia Colony; died 10 Sep 1822, Putnam County, Georgia.

    Notes:

Other Children born to Mary Anthony and Josiah Carter are John, 7 May 1786; Daniel, 1 Apr 1788; Nancy, 22 Feb 1790; and James, 3 Apr 1792; William, abt 1791; and Judith, 3 Feb 1794; were born between 1785-1792 in Green Co., or Warren County, Georgia.

Beginning in the early 1770's, there was a migration of families from the Goochland County and surrounding area to southwest Virginia. Descendants of these families (Carter, Atkins(on), Dillon, Callaway, Tatum, Anthony, Bowman, Stoval, and others) can still be found in the beautiful and remote hills of Patrick and Henry Counties today. Baynes Carter and his brothers Josiah and John, third generation Carters, were among the early settlers who made their way south and west for better opportunities and more productive land.

Josiah Carter's Family Bible record shows the birth of seven children that lived during the time they were in Virginia, the seventh (Christopher) being born in 1782. In the next year (April, 1784) Josiah Carter swore in Georgia that he had seven children. On 7-21-1784, he swore that he had never received any land grants and that he had exclusive of himself and wife, seven children and eight negroes. That this Josiah is the same as the Henry County family is the close association of the Anthony's and Carter's both in Virginia and in Georgia...

Just three years later, Baynes Carter (age 22) and his brother Josiah, along with other citizens of Henry County, Virginia, were called upon to renounce their allegiance to Great Britain and swear their allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Their signatures appear on the on 30 August 1777 list of Edmond Lyne, Esquire. This demonstrates that both men supported the impending Revolution and qualifies their descendants for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. Josiah is also recorded in the Virginia Publick Claims for Henry County as being reimbursed for provisions supporting the war:

Josiah married Mary Menges 'Mollie' Anthony 26 Jun 1771, Bedford Co., Virginia. Mary (daughter of Joseph Anthony, Sr. and Elizabeth Clark) was born 17 Nov 1754, Albermarle, Virginia Colony; died 22 Jul 1820, Hancock County, Georgia. [Group Sheet]

A 1773 Goochland County deed shows Baynes Carter and his widowed mother Mary, now of Pittsylvania County, selling their home place to Samuel Coleman Morris. Beginning a year or so prior to the sale of the Goochland County home place, Baynes, Josiah and John had begun to leave records in Pittsylvania, Bedford and Henry Counties.

In August of 1774, records show that Baynes Carter, about age 18 or 19, received pay for 82 days service under Captain Abraham Penn in the conflict between the Colony of Virginia and the Native Americans of the Ohio Valley. This conflict, Dunmore's War, was named for the Royal Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, who organized a large militia to ultimately prevent the Delaware, Mingo, and Shawnee from settling or hunting south of the Ohio River. John Carter, an elder brother of Baynes, served in this conflict as well.

Few records have surfaced on Baynes Carter but we know that he purchased ?sundries? at the estate sale of John Hail in Pittsylvania County (Inventory recorded 26 September 1774). He also served as a guard for his county in 1777: 'Henry County Levy is made to Baines [sic] Carter, guarding, same 5 days.' On 21 July 1778, Henry County deeds show Josiah Carter conveying and selling to his brother Baynes 89 acres of land crossing Little Reedy Creek and Reed Creek to the mouth of said creek on Smith River. Over the next few years, several other Henry County land transactions are recorded concerning Baynes Carter. In 1780, Josiah Carter transferred some of his Reedy Creek property to his brother Baynes due to damages sustained by Baynes resulting from a grist mill operation. [This land is located near the present-day intersection of Route 220 and State Route 57 between Bassett and Collinsville, Virginia. [Josiah Carter's grist mill was still standing there as of 1920.] About the time Josiah Carter transferred the Reedy Creek property to his brother Baynes, Josiah, along with a contingent of other Henry County, Virginia, families, migrated farther south to the state of Georgia.

It's not until a land transaction on 24 June 1784 that we learn Baynes Carter has a wife: Baynes Carter and his wife Martha sell 221 acres of land on Reed Creek to George Hairston. To date no marriage record or bond has been found and Martha's surname remains unknown, but other records conclude that Baynes and Martha had been married at least 10 years by this time. In 1788, just a few years after the sale of the 221 acres of land, Baynes Carter passed away, leaving a widow and a son Jesse, age 13.
