    Notes:

    John was a very good bear hunters and was fearless. One
    story is written that other men were frightened to go into
    a cave just a mile up the creek from the family mill, but
    John and his brother, George, entered, shot once and drug
    out a 450 pound bear. The meat and grease lasted for a
