James Winfree m. Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Ambrose Jones and Catherine Collins, daughter of James Collins. Their son, David Nicholas Winfree m. Achsah Tuck, daughter of John Tuck and Mary Powell. Their daughter Nancy Winfree m. Edward Tuck, son of John Tuck and Mary Powell. Acksah Tuck and Edward Tuck are brother and sister, and David Winfree and Nancy Winfree were brother and sister. I have a lot of this information in the book I published August 1, 2000, in which I own the original record book and bible records their birth, marriage and death deaths are recorded therein, including the hour of death for most of them, and in a few cases where they married.
In essence, Edward Tuck and Nancy Winfree's children are
members of both the James Winfree family who lived just
across the state line in Granville County North Carolina
from Virgilina, Virginia and the John Tuck and Mary Powell
family who lived in Halifax County, Virginia. Edward and
Nancy lived at Tuck's Cross Roads in Halifax County,
Virginia right on the state line of NC and Virginia, in
Virgilina, Virginia and their house is still standing. One
of their descendants was Governor of Virginia. There is
lots of information on that family and the Tuck's have an
annual reunion there every year. Some of them are still
living there.
I have John Tuck's daughter Achsah Tuck's line in my book,
titled "Genealogical Records by Lela B. Winfree" published
August 1, 2000. You can look it up in the Mormon Church
Branches as they purchased a copy of my book in early 2001,
and I gave them permission to microfilm my book and signed
another document giving them permission to put filmed
copies of my book in all of their branches in 2001, barely
a year after publication. I do have some errors in my
book, but it is with an addenda in their branches, and of
course, with this type of work, there is yet other mistakes
here and there to be found which I add to the addenda as
they are found, sometimes by myself or other members who
did not and would not participate in the early stages of my
work. In case you might be interested, my book is $25.00
postpaid within the U.S. only, 370 pages, back and forward
indexing, and with some cross references to other families
I have in my book in which some of their marriages took
place.
Mrs. Winfree
Also:
Aletha Jane Macon published a book in 1964 on "John And
Edward Tuck Of Halifax County Virginia And Some Of Their
Descendants". Her book is in the Libraries also. She was
killed by a hit and run driver several years ago. We posted
a correction to Page 17 of her book which she mailed to us,
on the Tuck GenForum Home Page several years ago. It is
under the name of Clarence Winfree or Lela Winfree. She did
not have the birth dates of John Tuck's children when she
did her book.
We mailed a photo copy of the record book which was
probably owned by James Winfree of Granville County, North
Carolina and his eldest son, David Nicholas Winfree carried
to Smith County, Tn in November 1822 after she published
her book, a copy of which we purchased directly from her in
1964. In her book, she has Achsah Tuck listed as not
married. She did marry too, and their marriage date,
husband and names, birth dates and marriages of her
children and descnedants are recorded in both a Record Book
we own, leather covered, hand made and hand stitched and
linen pages. In addition, we also own the Bible in which
belonged to her youngest son, Benjamin Franklin Winfree (B.
F. Winfree) born in Halifax County, Virginia; lived and
died in Cove Hollow, DeKalb County, Tennessee, migrating to
Smith County, Tn in November 1822.
Some of the Tucks went from Smith County, Tn to Macon
County, Tennessee and bought land there on Barren Creek
from Benjamin Winfree, then several of the Tucks from Smith
County, Tennessee and Macon County, Tennessee went into
Kentucky, and Powell Tuck died in Butler County, Kentucky.
They are descendants of John Tuck and Mary Powell. Edward
Tuck of Virgilina, Virginia was a lawyer there and the
Tuck's in Virginia have tons of information on him.
DAvid Nicholas Winfree lived in both Granville County, NC
and Halifax County, Virginia and land records in Granville
Co., NC, auction attendance with John Tuck in Halifax
County, Virginia and David Nicholas Winfree and wife,
Achsah Tuck's remains were removed by the Corps of
Engineers to Mount Holly Cemetery in Smithville, DeKalb
County, Tennessee to make way for the Center Hill Dam. The
Corps of Engineers in Nashville, Tennessee maintains these
records.
Name:
FAG lists her name as Mary Ellen. Elizabeth is more likely as it is her mother's name.

Mastin, son of David Powell (d.1801) was a respected member of the community. I don't know why he was executor of a Smith estate unless it was because of his status in the community. He married a Carter[ Polly,d/oRichard] and his brother (David, Jr.) married a Smith. Perhaps that is where the connection came form. David Jr married (I think) Sarah Wynne Smith but I don't know anything about her family.
That community was centered around the present town of Halifax, Virginia which is only a few miles from South Boston. Mastin later settled along the Dan River between Danville and South Boston where he ran a tavern, had a race track and lots of kids. A good portion of the Powells in north central NC descend from Mastin and his wife Elizabeth [his wife is Mary O. Carter, d/o Richard and Susannah Bigger]. I do know that David and Sarah moved to NC shortly after their marriage. Mastin's oldest son, Carter Powell, was a wealthy landowner in the vicinity of Milton, NC.

Mastin was my 3rd G grandfather. Interesting family history ... his father was David Powell, hiw mother was Mary Epps Powell (2nd cousin to Thomas Jefferson). Mary died and David took in and maried a widow , Susannah Carter, with several young children. Mastin and Susannah's daughter Polly hit it right off and were married in 1796 when Polly was probably about 15. Mastin was 20. Never found a marriage record, suspect they were spirited away to NC (just across the river) for a shotgun marriage. David died in 1801, Susannah burned his will (we think) and claimed the widow's share of David's considerable estate. Mastin (probably born Martin but never used the right name) moved to another area of Halifax County and built a stagecoach inn with a bar and a racetrack. He raised a lot of tobacco and made a lot of money. He and Polly had lots of kids. Eventually Susannah died and Mastin was appointed executor of Davids's estate in 1815. I descend from mastin's youngest son, William Jefferson Powell. North central North Carolina is populated with descendants of mastin's other kids, particularly his first-born, Carter Glass Powell who was a prolific planter in Caswell county.
Would like to exchange information with other descendants of Mastin's grandfather, Edward Powell of halifax County VA.
