    Aubrey R. Carter, Sr., M.D., F.A.C.S. Aubrey R. Carter, Sr., M.D., F.A.C.S., died in Everett, WA on December 5, 2003 at the age of 100 years.

    Aubrey Richardson Carter, Sr. was born in a log cabin in Keeling, VA on September 16, 1903 to Halcott Townes Carter and Nancy Richardson Carter, the third of six children. His college preparatory education took place at Hargrave Military Academy, Chathan, VA, after which he attended the University of Richmond at Richmond, VA on scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1925. He then went on to the University of Virginia from which he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1929. His internship and surgical training took place at Virginia Mason Hospital and Clinic in Seattle, WA. In September 1930, Dr. Carter moved to Fairbanks, AK, where he was appointed as surgeon for the federally-operated Alaska Railroad. He also served as surgeon for the employees of the United States Smelting, Mining and Refining Company. In 1933, he co-founded the Fairbanks Medical and Surgical Clinic and was appointed to the Alaska Board of Medical Examiners. While in Alaska, Dr. Carter became politically active and was appointed Chairman of the Alaska Democratic Central Committee. He returned to the lower 48 states in 1939 to pursue post-graduate work in orthopedics at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by another year as a research fellow at the Warwick Cancer Clinic in Washington, D.C. Upon the outbreak of World War II, Dr. Carter joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps with the rank of Major and was appointed Chief of Surgical Service for the 183rd Station Hospital in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. After eight months of service, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and continued serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for a total of 18 months. Following a three month appointment to a state-side hospital, on his own initiative, he returned to the Pacific Theater as Commanding Officer of the 313th General Hospital with the rank of colonel. He served on active duty until 1946. On February 16, 1946, Aubrey R. Carter, Sr. married Helen Frances Green in Washington, D.C. Following a six-month honeymoon, the Carters moved to Everett, WA in 1947, where Dr. Carter commenced his medical practice. He served as Chief of Staff of Everett General Hospital and Chief of Staff of Providence Hospital in 1954 and 1956 respectively. Dr. Carter was appointed as a Fellow to the American College of Surgeons in 1944, and was active in that organization throughout his medical career. He also served as the President of the Snohomish County Medical Society and continued his private practice until 1962. From 1962 until 1964, he served as the Seattle District Medical Director for the U.S. Department of Labor. In 1964, he became Chief of the Outpatient Department Orthopedic Clinic for the Veterans Administration, which he held until he retired in 1973. Following his retirement, he spent six more years as a medical consultant for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and the Social Security Administration, until he retired in 1979 after 50 years of active practice. Dr. Carter was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, having joined through the Carter Lodge A.F. and A.M. Blairs, VA. He was also a member of Alpha Lodge #212, Everett, the Scottish Rite Temple of Freemasonry; and the Nile Temple. He was a member of the Everett Elks Lodge #479, and a past member of the Everett Golf and Country Club.

    Dr. Carter's wife of 53 years, Helen, died in February of 1999. His brothers, Leonard Carter, Harold Carter, Garland Carter and George Carter, and his sister Katherine Carter pre-deceased him. He is survived by his son, Aubrey R. Carter, Jr., D.D.S. and wife Nancy Carter; his son Donald W. Carter and wife Marla Carter; grandchildren, Shayna Mickelson, Ryland Carter, Paige Carter, and Halcott Richardson Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews in Virginia and North Carolina.

    Funeral services will take place at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church, 2936 Rockefeller, Everett, WA. A reception for friends and family will follow the service at 2;00pm at the Everett Golf and Country Club, 1500 52nd St., Everett, WA. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Providence Hospital of Everett, WA, Hargrave Military Academy, or your choice of charity.

    Garland Edward Carter, of 1111 Main Street, Stratford House, died Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.

    Born Oct. 6, 1906, in the Chestnut Level community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Halcotte Townes Carter and Nannie Richardson Carter.

    Mr. Carter was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy. In 1935, he was employed by J.M. Edmunds Company (now Virginia Tobacco Company). At his retirement in 1971, he was president and director of Virginia Tobacco Company.

    Mr. Carter was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Class 20.

    He was a past master of Carter Masonic Lodge 323 and former board member of First Virginia Bank South.

    He was married to the former Catherine Bennett on May 29, 1928, who survives.

    In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Carter White of Montgomery, Ala.; two granddaughters, Cathy White Grogan of Danville and Julie W. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Aubrey Carter of Everett, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Kelly N. Grogan and Tommy Grogan, both of Danville, and Eric A. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

    Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with Masonic rites by Carter Masonic Lodge 323.

    George R. Carter, retired assistant manager of the Richmond Leaf Department of American Tobacco Co., died yesterday in a local hospital.

    Mr. Carter, a Pittsylvania County native, moved here in 1941.

    Since his retirement, he had been a real estate agent and a committee clerk for the Virginia Senate.

    He was a former master of Carter Lodge 323, AF & AM, in Blairs in Pittsylvania.

    Mr. Carter also was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Sommerset Chapter of Magna Carter Barons, and First Baptist Church.

    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Smith Carter; a daughter, Mrs. Gina Holden of Berryville; two brothers, Dr. A.R. Carter of Everett, Wash., and Garland E. Carter of Danville; and two grandchildren.

    A funeral will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Burial will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Highland Burial Park in Danville.

    The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the American Heart Fund or the North Carolina Children's Home Society in Greensboro, N.C.
