    Notes:

    Walter Fountain Carter was born in Williamson County, Tennessee. He was his parents' first son. By the 1880 census he had married a woman named Maria T. who was born in New Hampshire. In 1880 they were living in Clay Center, Kansas, with their three year old son Charles B. and five-month old daughter, Alma (who later married Joseph C. Henry). Mr. Carter had a store. Walter's younger brother Hugh Carter (b. 1860) also lived with them in 1880. Hugh and his family remained in Kansas while Walter moved his family to Eugene, Oregon some time before the 1920 census. He lived out the remainder of his life in his daughter's household.
