W. Brooks Powell Dies Unexpectedly

William Brooks Powell, for thirty-four years, a well-known
citizen of Danville, died unexpectedly at his home, 775
Main street, shortly before seven o'clock, Sunday night.
Mr. Powell, who was 70 years of age, had been in declining
health for five years, but his death was quite
unanticipated. He had been able to go out recently, and had
been engaged on tobacco market during the heavy period of
the past week. On Sunday morning he was taken ill and he
gradually grew worse during the day, his condition becoming
critical during the evening when life left him peacefully.

Mr. Powell was born in Caswell county March 4, 1853, being
a son of the late Mastin Jefferson Powell and Mrs. Susan
Gillespie Powell. He came to Danville thirty-four years
since, and engaged into the tobacco business, being a
re-handler and one of the veteran buyers of the market. He
was the oldest member of the Danville Tobacco Association,
and three years ago he was elected an honorary life member
of the organization. Mr. Powell was widely known, not only
among the tobacco fraternity of this city, but among the
farmers patronizing the Danville market for many miles
around. Mr. Powell was married about forty years ago to
Miss Florence Allen at Milton, who survives with three
children, Gordon B. Powell Danville, Mrs. Dan E. Hooker,
Greensboro, Mrs. Evelyn P. Skinner and Miss Colleen Powell.
Three sisters survive Mrs. John G. Lea, Danville, Mrs. J.
H. Slade, of Blanch, N. C., and Mrs. R. M. Hubbard, of
South Hill. He also leaves a half-brother John B. Powell.

The funeral will be held from the home at ten o'clock
Tuesday morning and will be conducted by the Rev. James M.
Shelburne. Interment will be in Green Hill cemetery.

William married Florence Fay Allen Abt 1883, Caswell County, North Carolina. Florence (daughter of Charles Jasper Allen and Sarah 'Sally' Powers) was born 16 Jul 1859, Milton, Caswell, North Carolina; died 7 Dec 1941, Danville Virginia; was buried , Green Hill Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. Gordon married Sarah Wayne Durham 10 Jun 1941, Danville, Virginia. Sarah (daughter of Carson H. Durham and Sarah Lou Ella 'Sallie' Newlin) was born 3 Aug 1909, Burlington, North Carolina; died 28 Jun 1981, Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; was buried , Green Hill Cemetery, Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Lelia married Daniel Edward Hooker. Daniel was born Est 1880; died 1937. [Group Sheet]
