- Will of Henry Lansford
In the name of God, Amen. On the ninth day of September one thousand seven hundred and seventy six - I Henry Lansford of Pittsylvania County Virginia am well in health and of good and sound memory, thanks be to God for it and calling to remembrance the uncertain estate of this transitory life and that all flesh must yield unto death when it shall please God to call, do make, constitute, ordain and deliver this my last will and testament in manner and form, following, revoking and annulling by these presents all and every testament and testaments, will and wills hereafter by me made and declare either by work or writing that this be taken only for my last will and testament and none others. And first, being penitent and sorry for my sins, pray most humbly, desiring forgiveness for the same. I give and commit my soul into Almighty God, My Savior and Redeemer, in whom and by the merits of Jesus Christ, I trust and believe assured to be saved, and to havefull mention and forgiveness for all my sins, past and that my soul with my body at general day of the Resurrection shall raise again with joy and through the merits of Christ's death and passion, possess and enjoy the Kingdom of Heaven, prepared forHis elect and chosen, and my body be buried in such a place where it shall pleasemy executors, hereafter to appoint and now for the letting of my temporal estate and such goods, cattels and debts as it hath pleased Go d, far above my deserts to bestow upon me. I do ordain and give and dispose the same in manner and form, following that is to say:
First, I will that all debts and dues as I owe in right or conscience to any person or persons, whatsoever, shall be well and truly contended and paid, or ordained to be paid in a convenient time after my decease, by my Executors, hereafter named.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my eldest sons, Isham Lansford and Henry Lansford, one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania of Virginia on Cascade Creek, containing five hundred andseventy
acres, to be divided equally between them. I give to them and their heirs, to their
own proper use and behoof forever, also give and bequeath unto my son Henry
Lansford, one negro girl named Nan, and I give her to him and to his heirs to
their proper use and behoof forever.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Elijah Lansford, one negro boyAlbet. I
give him to his heirs and to their own proper use and behoof forever, andalso
I will that this my son Elijah and his nergo Albet shall be under thecare of my
two sons Isham and Henry until he, the said Elijah Lansford shall be ofage
and then to be delivered to him if found capable to enjoy it and ifElijah shall
die without heir the negro to be divided between the two other brothers.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Cate Lansford, one breedingmare
and one cow and calf, and I give them to her and her heirs to their ownproper
use and befoof forever.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Susannah Lansford one mareand
one cow and one calf and I give them to her and her heirs and to theirown
proper use and behoof forever.
Item - I give unto my grandson Josiah Lansford, a ten pounds currentmoney at
the age of twenty-one by my Executors, and now for letting of my estate.
I leave unto my beloved wife Catharine Lansford during the time of her life or
widowhood and after her decease the land and stock and negro wench to be
sold and each child to have their equal part I give it to them and their own
proper use and behoof forever and after all I leave my beloved wife Catharine
Lansford and my son Isham Lansford to be my wholely and solely Executors,
in witness whereof I set my hand and affix my seal this day and datefirst above written.

At a court held for Pittsylvania County the 22th of January 1778, thewithin
last will and testament of Henry Lansford deceased was exhibited in too court
by Catharine Lansford Executrix and Isham Lansford Executo r thereinnamed and
proved by the oaths of two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to b erecorded
and on the motion of the said Executrix and Ex'or., who ma de oathaccording to
law, certificate is granted them for obtainin g a probate therefrom indue form of
law, giving security whereupon t hey together with George Young theirsecuritys
entered into bond an d acknowledged the same according to law.
