      Valentine Martin
Birth 1710, New Kent County, Virginia
      Death 1760, Cumberland County, Virginia
      Burial: Burnt Chimney Cemetery
      Cumberland County, Virginia
Valentine Martin was probably the son of Martin Martin and Sarah Hix. He was baptized on June 18, 1710 in St. Peter's Episcopal Parish of New Kent County, Virginia - exact date of birth is unknown.

A land deed dated May 15, 1739, listed Valentine Martin purchasing 200 acres along the Willis River from Merry Webb for Eight Pounds - located at that time in Goochland County, Virginia.

On March 15, 1744, Valentine received patent for 400 more acres lying adjacent and on both sides of the Cat Tail Branch of the same river. The land is now located in Cumberland County since that section of Goochland County became Cumberland County in 1749.

Valentine married Jane Bridgewater and they had at least eleven children. He wrote his Will on May 21, 1758 and the will was probated on July 28, 1760. Burial took place on the south side of his farm in what was known as Burnt Chimney Cemetery. When the cemetery was visited in 1954 by Valentine Martin Family Historian, John R. Martin, there were no stones.

Feb. 24, 2019: Exciting News! The Autosomal DNA of a descendant of Valentine Martin bap 1710 matches the DNA of a descendant of Ellyson Martin (b 1767), son of Thomas Martin and Elizabeth Ellyson. Looks like Thomas, son of Martin Martin, married Elizbeth Ellyson before 2 Mar 1765 when the Quaker widow, Elizabeth (Ellyson) Stanley, received a complaint from Henrico Monthly Meeting about being married by a Priest. Thomas and Elizabeth were probably married in Episcopalian St. Peter's Parish of New Kent County, VA. St. Peter's records show the birth of Ellyson Martin.
The Martin Martin of this memorial:
~ Born about 1668 probably in Virginia
Source for DATE: Martin Martin was appointed Processioner in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia in 1689. Thus he would have to be born between 1668 and 1671 to be of age in order to own and survey land.
Source for BIRTH PLACE: DNA testing shows Martin Martin's ancestors were from England (Haplo Group R-M512) and not from Scotland or Ireland.
Martin Martin's parents are unknown at this time.
Recently discovered not all participants of the Martin Surname Y-DNA Study are direct line Martin males.

NOTE: The descendant of George Martin from England (kit 35335) has tested only 12 Y-DNA Markers and they match descendant of this Valentine. That means a 95% probability their Most Recent Common Ancestor would be located within 29 generations. A 67 Y-DNA test increases the 95% probability their MRCA to within 9 generations.

      ~ Died 1745
Source for DATE OF DEATH: Thomas Martin, son of Martin Martin, re-surveyed the land his father gave him in his will.
~ Burial probably on son Valentine's farm in Goochland County, Virginia.
Sources for BURIAL PLACE: Martin Martin lived in what is now Powhatan County, VA in 1725. In 1730 he abandoned his land, which was then farmed by a Stephen Woodson. In 1735, Stephen Woodson's Will states that Martin Martin is "late of New Kent County". Term was used to indicate where a person originated and would be unrelated to a time frame.
There's a land deed for son Valentine in 1739 along the Willis River in what was Goochland County, VA. In 1744 Valentine moved his family to "both sides" of the Cat Tail Branch of the Willis River again in Goochland County- where descendants lived until Valentine Martin's wife and son John sold the property in 1795. (This section of Goochland County, Virgnina became Cumberland County, Virginia in 1749.)
In his 1960 book called, "Valentine Martin of Cumberland County, Virginia", Family Historian, John R. Martin, gave Goochland County as resting place of Martin Martin. I chose to use Burnt Chimney Cemetery so he would be found.
Graves for Martin Martin and wife, Sarah, are NOT listed anywhere in the complete book of St. Peter's Parish cemetery transcriptions according to LaVonne Allen of the New Kent County, Virginia Historical Society. (May 2015)
Documented children were: AMESEN MARTIN, ELIZABETH ANN (MARTIN) WEBB, VALENTINE MARTIN, THOMAS MARTIN, and LUCY MARTIN.
NOTE: Howard W. Amos a descendant of William Amos born 1726 has found this William married a female named Lucy Woodward, possibly daughter or granddaughter of Lancelot Woodward and Elizabeth Cocke. Bill has DNA evidence along with a paper trail that Lucy Martin, daughter of Martin and Sarah (Hix) Martin, DID NOT marry William Amos born 1726.
