Mary 'Polly' Carter, d/o Richard and Susannah Bigger Carter, married Mastin Powell. At least we think he married her, but no record has been found to my knowledge. They did, however, live together for many years, until death separated them. Polly must have been about 15 or 16 when her father, Richard, died and her mother Susannah married his great friend, David Powell. It is whispered that David, whose wife, Mary Epps Powell, had died, felt sorry for his friend's wife and married her. His [David's] children were, obviously very happy with their new step-siblings, as 4 of Richard Carter's children married David Powell's children, their then, step-siblings. Polly, one of the elder girls, it is said, 'ran away' with Mastin Powell. Thomas married Mary Powell, Lemuel married Martha 'Patsy' Powell and Richard Jr. married Nancy T. Powell. Census records verify these relationships. In the 1850 Census for Halifax, Virginia, Mary Carter Powell is found in the household of her granddaughter, Sarah Frances Powell who has recently married William T. Edwards and produced the first grandchild for Mastin and Polly. William has gone off to war and will die soon. Sarah 'Sally' will marry next, his brother, Addison Lafayette Edwards. Sarah Frances and Addison are my great grandparents. [mfe]
