In Reply to: alleged Jesse Carter married to Elizabeth Montague by Holly Hampton of 22546
It turns out there was another Jesse Carter in Cumberland County around the end of the 18th century. This Jesse was a son of Isham Carter and Tabitha Oslin. From the depositions taken in a case against Dudley Street, an inspector at the tobacco warehouse of John Woodson in Cartersville, we find in 1794 that Isham Carter and his son Jesse also worked at that warehouse. In the 1810 Census Jesse Carter was listed between 26 and 44 years of age, so was born between 1766 and 1784.
I think it is likely that this Jesse rather than the son of Charles Carter is the one who married Elizabeth Montague. I say this because when Jesse and Elizabeth acquired the land that was conveyed to Everard Carter by Jesse's heirs it was from a Chirsty Boatwright who provided the funds through a deed of trust and who was related to Tabitha Carter through a Boatwright-Oslin marriage.
