Think I found where William Blair is probably buried " Sometime during the 1780's they migrated to Pittsylvania Co., Va. They lived on Tommy Hawk Creek where he died in 1790." William's son Samuel Brittain Blair Sr. home/farm and burial is off RT 750 near Rondo,Va. Tomahawk Creek is right where the farm and building are.I believe I found the "dirt road abt. 1 mile on RT 750 from RT 58 at Rondo" Soon...I'm going to check this out,soon.-Sammy Blair

He was a man of bold and commanding figure, and found _________ grace __________ and a just and fair representative as a minister honored and beloved.

The copy of this text is badly degraded and many words are questionable; no mention is made of a wife; presumably there was one who brought him a son. Further research is underway. The RWA of Jesse Reynolds, s/o William of Culpepper Reynolds says that He (Jesse) names Rev. William Blair as a Character Witness in 1833. It is believed that William of Culpepper Reynolds also came to Pittsylvania County in or around 1781. Several items in the Christine Reynolds Reynolds Memoir do not match facts later learned. She states that William Blair, husband of Sarah Sutter died on one date, but another child is listed born two years later. We have Jesse Reynolds RWA stating Rev. William Blair can vouch for his character in 1833. He could not have died before 1833. - Further research is underway - Mary Frances Reynolds Eggleston

Suspect these Blairs directly related to the Blairs in Pittsylvania County, Virginia; if the shown William Blair, Immigrant was born in 1750, his relatives were married with families in 1756. Speculate William was s/o one of these Blairs who also disappeared from the tax rolls at the same time as did the Reynolds. William was born in Moneymore, Londonderry Co., Ireland. He married Sarah Sutter, of York Co., Pennsylvania, daughter of George Sutter. He enlisted February 28, 1776 in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Samuel Hays Company of the 6th Pennsylvania Battery (Battalion) which consist of six companies from Cumberland County and two from York County. Sometime during the 1780's they migrated to Pittsylvania Co., Va. They lived on Tommy Hawk Creek where he died in 1790. William and Sarah had 9 children, 7 boys and 2 girls, John, George, James, Mary, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Samuel and Ralph. After William's death Sarah moved to Murry County, Tennessee to
live with one or both of the girls. In 1804 Sarah gave Power of Attorney from Tennessee for James and George to settle her interest in the estate
of her father George Sutter, deceased, of York County, Pennsylvania. In 1807 Sarah gave James Power of Attorney to sell her lands in Pittsylvania County, Va. William's and Sarah's first home is said to have been named "Green Castle Plantation". (Nicholas J. Blair) WILLIAM BLAIR & SARAH SUTTER OF PITTSYLVANIIA COUNTY, VA.

      1. WILLIAM BLAIR b. 1750, Ireland, occupation Linen Salesman in Ire., m. c 1773, in York Co., PA, SARAH SUTTER, b. 1760, York Co., PA, (daughter of GEORGE SUTTER and MARY __) d. 1809, Murry Co. TN. WILLIAM died 1790, Pittsylvania Co., VA William enlisted Feb 20, 1776 in Capt. Samuel Hay's Co. of 6th PA Bat which consisted of six companies from Cumberland Co. & two from York Co. PA. Sometime during the 1780's he migrated to
Pittsylvania Co., VA and died 1790. After his death, Sarah moved to Maury Co., TN to live with one or both of her daughters. In 1804 Sarah gave a
power of attorney fro Tennessee for James Blair & George Blair to settle her interest in the estate of her father, George Sutter, deceased of York
Co., PA. In 1807 Sarah gave James Blair power of attorney to sell her land in Pittsylvania Co. VA.
BSGR mem # 55 Mark L. Gardner desc. from this line, but I have no chart for him. Richard White Blair who was a member of the original Blair
Society shows this William's birth place as a farm at Mattross, Co. Berry Ireland. Most of the current members just show either Ireland or
Moneymore, Co. Londonderry. Another member of the original Soc. pp. 421 ff . Carlisle.adds: She quotes two separate records from the 5th series of PA archives. Vol. 2 pg 206 is the William Blair who served in Capt Daniel Hay's Co. b. Moneymore, Ireland. etc. enlisted Feb 28, 1776. The other is from Vol. 111 pg 979 for
a William Blair, b. Mattross, Co. Derry, Ireland. Enlisted in Philadelphia but resided in York Co. before enlisting. May 24, 1777. Proof: War Dept
rec., Washington D.C. These appear to be TWO very separated William Blairs.
(NOTE: One of the Blair lines in Erie Co. PA. also claim to desc. from a William Blair, b. 1750 Monneymor, Ireland who served in the Revolutionary
War. She also added that there is a deed on record in Pittsylvania Co. VA 19 Jan 1789 when Sarah is listed as his wife. Says that Tradition in her family was that William came over to America as a Linen salesman for his father who was a large linen manufacturer and he was the first of three brothers to locate in the U.S.
Sarah Sutter was the dau. of George Sutter of Fawn Tvp., York Co., PA. BSGR mem. # 33 adds: William Blair is listed as a member of the 6th Pa
Battalion "Blair, William, born in Moneymore, Co. Derry Ireland enlisted Feb. 28, 1776, taken June 8, 1776, paroled Aug 9, 1776". This is the only
thing I have ever found in writing about where William Blair was born. I have never found anything in writing about when he was born. Most people have picked up 1750 or abt. 1750. I have never found anything in writing about when William migrated to VA. It has been reported that William was a clothing salesman, but, I have never found this in writing. In the York Co., Historical Society, York PA-An alphabetical listing of the 'taxables' given on collectors warrants of York Co. I have a letter on file in Sarah's folder from Dian Gover prepared by Mrs. James S. A family tradition said that William came to America as a Linen salesman
for his father, a large linen manufacturer in Ireland, and he was the
first of three brothers to locate in the U.S. No documentation has been
located to support this family tradition or determine William's
      birthplace.
William Blair said to have lived in Fawn Twp., York Co. PA. In the York
Co. Historical Society, York PA is an alphabetical listing of the
"taxables" given on collectors warrants of York Co. as of Dec 1771 for the
County tax of 1772. It shows William Blair, Fawn Twp. per head tax 0.6.0,
but he is not shown on the Fawn Twp. tax lists in the PA Archives in 1779,
      1781, 1782 or 1783.
Early in the Revolutionary War in the militia lists for Philadelphia,
there is a William Blair listed with some Suter Men. He is marked "gone"
on the later lists. Because of the presence of the Suter men in this unit,
it makes one wonder if William may have been living in Philadelphia at
      that time.
The first evidence for William in VA is on the tithable list for 1786 of
Ludowick Tuggle Dist. of his militia, which includes the names Henry
Adkins, John Bobbitt, William Blair & Samuel Callands.
      Other Pittsylvania Co., records are:
      1. 9 Jan 1789 William Blair sold 284 acres land for 45 pounds current
money of VA. to Nathaniel Hicks. Signed by William Blair, Sarah his wife

      bought land 16 Feb
1798 from Edmund Boaz for 25 pounds current money of VA. (This would
appear to indicate that her husband was deceased, as VA land titles were
usually vested in the husband's name.)
      5. In Deed Book.15, p. 123 if: Sarah Blair gave a power of attorney 14 Sep
1804 for her sons James Blair and George Blair to settle her interest in
the estate of her father George Sutter, deceased in Yourke Co. PA
      6. In Deed Book 15 p. 289 -Sarah Blair gives James Blair power of attorney
to sell land in Pittsylvania Co. VA on 23 Oct 1804 (No land boundaries are
given on this sale but it is assumed to be the same land she purchased in
      1789).
Sarah Blair is named in the Will of her brother William Sutter in Will
Book C., p. 28, York Co. PA, dated 27 Mar 1771. There is also reference to
a deed from George Sutter of Fawn Township to Joseph Mitchell on 8 Mar
1794 filed in Deed bk. 2-1, p. 446, the significance of which is not
      explained.
Note: George Sutter shows up on the tax lists of Fawn Twp. York Co. for
the first Time in 1782 with 120 acres of land. He is not on the lists for
1779 or 1781, although a John Sutter with 1 cow & 1 horse is listed in
1781. There is a possibility that he was living in Philadelphia prior to
      1781.
After William Blair's death, his wife Sarah moved to Maury Co. TN to live
with one or both of her daughters. A letter written by Mrs. James S. Jones
of Chatham VA, reads: "Mrs. Sarah Blair went to her daughter's, Mrs. Mary
Mack, in Maury Co. TN. This is proven by a letter written to William and
Mary Blair Mack by her brother George Blair."
Many researchers show that William Blair was born in Moneymore, Ireland in
1750. This birth place and date are both based on a Revolutionary War
record that has been accepted by the DAR as this William Blair. However,
recent research has brought into question whether the record quoted is the
correct record for this particular William Blair.
The DAR has accepted the following service records for this soldier:
      "service from 28 Feb 1776 to 9 Aug 1776 (PA-II-206)."
Served in Capt.Hay's Company of the 6th PA Batt which consisted of 6
      companies from
Cumberland Co. and 2 companies from York. PA. William Blair is listed as a
      member of the 6th Pa
Battalion "Blair, William, born in Moneymore, Co. Derry Ireland enlisted
      Feb 28, 1776, taken June 8, 1776, paroled Aug 9, 1776.
A notation in the DAR documentation files was also found, quoting [PA
6-11-551]: "George Sutter, John Sutter, William Blare (sic) and others as
members ot the 6th Batt. of York Co. Militia signed a petition showing
them to be patriotic citizens of the State of Pennsylvania." The notation
on the bottom of this page by some OAR official says "NO Proof same man as
      above" M.L. H. 19 May 1938.
This petition does indeed appear to be this William Blair. The 6th
Battalion York Co. Militia was raised in Fawn, Hopewell and Chanceford
Twp. of York Co. and this service in indeed logical for this William
      Blair.
If this service is correct, then he is probably not the William Blair who
served in the 6th and 7th Continental Line. He cannot be in 2 places at
once and the above petition would point to militia service, rather than
      the Continental Line.
There was a William Blair who served as follows: Pennsylvania Archives,
Series 1-IX, printed by the State of PA. Individual entries note Series,
Vol. and page. 6th PA Battalion, Col. William Irvine, Capt. Samuel Hay,
Pvt. William Blair, b. Moneymore, Co. Derry, Ireland, enlisted 28 Feb
      1776; taken prisoner 8 June 1776 and paroled 9 Aug 1776 (PA 5-11-206)
This Battalion, was raised in Cumberland Co. PA and taken captive at 3
Rivers Canada. Those members of the 6th Battalion, who re-enlisted were
formed into the 7th Regimentt. under Lt. Col. Grier. Samuel Hay became
Major of the Regiment. until he was promoted to Lt. Col. in 1778 and
promoted to command the 10th PA Battalion. These re-enlistments were for 3
years or duration of the war.
7th PA Regiment, Col. William Irvine, Capt. Samuel Hay, Pvt. William
Blair, enlisted for 3 years (PA 2-X-622) The exact date of this
re-enlistment is not known, however the regiment listing in the PA
Archives is dated 9 Mar 1777. As the regiment had only returned to
Carlisle from Fort Ticonderoga in early March, they appear to have
      re-enlisted immediately. (PA 2-X-61 1)
7th Reg. PA Line, was paid off at Carlisle in Apr 1781 including. Capt.
Samuel Hay's Co. The payroll records show a payment to William Blair,
      Private (PA 5-111-276)
The 6 Companies raised in Cumberland Co. appear to include Capt. Hay's
Company. This company was discharged following the mutiny of the PA Line
in 1781 and William, being paid in 1781, would appear to have served
continuously in the company. Thus, he cannot possibly be the same soldier
who is serving in the artillery regiment, having enlisted in Philadelphia
and served to the end of the war which is also claimed as the service
record for this William Blair by some researchers.
No one has ever submitted proof that this soldier who served in Capt.
Hay's Co. and the William Blair who died in Pittsylvania Co. VA are one
and the same person. The fact that another William Blair is said to have
lived in York Co. PA (descendants also claim he served in the war without
citing references) and two William Blairs are absolutely proven to have
been living in Carlisle of Cumberland Co. (where Hay's Co. was raised)
      complicates this service record.
In that his birth date and place are based on the Revolutionary War record
cited above. Obviously if he is not the same soldier, there is room for
error in his birth date and place.
Research is on-going concerning this man and his service record. Anyone
interested to contact the BSGR to determine the current status of this
      research.

Death: 19 JAN 1789 in Pittsylvania Co., VA 2
Death: 19 APR 1790 in Pittsylavania Co., VA 1
Burial: On Tommy Hawk Creek 1
      Reference Number: 5401
      Note:
      [Blair.FTW]

After William's death Sarah moved to Murry County, Tennessee to live with one or both of the girls. In 1804 Sarah gave Power of Attorney from Tennessee for James and George to settle her interest in the estate of her father George Sutter, deceased, of York County, Pennsylvania. In 1807 Sarah gave James Power of Attorney to sell her lands in Pittsylvania County, Va. William's and Sarah's first home is said to have been named "Green Castle Plantation". (Nicholas J. Blair)

In 1804 Sarah gave a power of attorney fro Tennessee for James Blair & George Blair to settle her interest in the estate of her father, George Sutter, deceased of York Co., PA. In 1807 Sarah gave James Blair power of attorney to sell her land in Pittsylvania Co. VA.
BSGR mem # 55 Mark L. Gardner desc. from this line, but I have no chart for him. Richard White Blair who was a member of the original Blair Society shows this William's birth place as a farm at Mattross, Co. Berry Ireland. Most of the current members just show either Ireland or Moneymore, Co.
111 pg 979 for a William Blair, b. Mattross, Co. Derry, Ireland. Enlisted in Philadelphia but resided in York Co. before enlisting. May 24, 1777. Proof: War Dept rec., Washington D.C. These appear to be TWO very separated William Blairs.
(NOTE: One of the Blair lines in Erie Co. PA. also claim to desc. from a William Blair, b. 1750 Monneymore, Ireland who served in the Revolutionary War.
BSGR mem. # 33 adds: William Blair is listed as a member of the 6th Pa Battalion "Blair, William, born in Moneymore, Co. Derry Ireland enlisted Feb. 28, 1776, taken June 8, 1776, paroled Aug 9, 1776". This is the only thing I have ever found in writing about where William Blair was born. I have never found anything in writing about when he was born. Most people have picked up 1750 or abt. 1750. I have never found anything in writing about when William migrated to VA. It has been reported that William was a clothing salesman, but, I have never found this in writing.

I have a letter on file in Sarah's folder from Dian Gover prepared by Mrs. James S. A family tradition said that William came to America as a Linen salesman for his father, a large linen manufacturer in Ireland, and he was the first of three brothers to locate in the U.S. No documentation has been located to support this family tradition or determine William's birthplace.
William Blair said to have lived in Fawn Twp., York Co. PA. In the York Co. Historical Society, York PA is an alphabetical listing of the "taxables" given on collectors warrants of York Co. as of Dec 1771 for the County tax of 1772. It shows William Blair, Fawn Twp. per head tax 0.6.0, but he is not shown on the Fawn Twp. tax lists in the PA Archives in 1779, 1781, 1782 or 1783.
Early in the Revolutionary War in the militia lists for Philadelphia, there is a William Blair listed with some Suter Men. He is marked "gone" on the later lists. Because of the presence of the Suter men in this unit, it makes one wonder if William may have been living in Philadelphia at that time.
The first evidence for William in VA is on the tithable list for 1786 of Ludowick Tuggle Dist. of his militia, which includes the names Henry Adkins, John Bobbitt, William Blair & Samuel Callands.
      Other Pittsylvania Co., records are:
      1. 9 Jan 1789 William Blair sold 284 acres land for 45 pounds current money of VA. to Nathaniel Hicks. Signed by William Blair, Sarah his wife being privately examined. Pittsylvania Co., VA Courthouse, Chatham, VA Deed Book. 8, p. 328-329

      4. Pittsylvania Co, VA Court House Deed book 11, p. 245ff. Sarah Blair bought land 16 Feb
1798 from Edmund Boaz for 25 pounds current money of VA. (This would appear to indicate that her husband was deceased, as VA land titles were usually vested in the husband's name.)
      5. In Deed Book.15, p. 123 if: Sarah Blair gave a power of attorney 14 Sep 1804 for her sons James Blair and George Blair to settle her interest in the estate of her father George Sutter, deceased in Yourke Co. PA
      6. In Deed Book 15 p. 289 -Sarah Blair gives James Blair power of attorney to sell land in Pittsylvania Co. VA on 23 Oct 1804 (No land boundaries are given on this sale but it is assumed to be the same land she purchased in 1789).
Sarah Blair is named in the Will of her brother William Sutter in Will Book C., p. 28, York Co. PA, dated 27 Mar 1771. There is also reference to a deed from George Sutter of Fawn Township to Joseph Mitchell on 8 Mar 1794 filed in Deed bk. 2-1, p. 446, the significance of which is not explained.
Note: George Sutter shows up on the tax lists of Fawn Twp. York Co. for the first Time in 1782 with 120 acres of land. He is not on the lists for 1779 or 1781, although a John Sutter with 1 cow & 1 horse is listed in 1781. There is a possibility that he was living in Philadelphia prior to 1781.
After William Blair's death, his wife Sarah moved to Maury Co. TN to live with one or both of her daughters. A letter written by Mrs. James S. Jones of Chatham VA, reads: "Mrs. Sarah Blair went to her daughter's, Mrs. Mary Mack, in Maury Co. TN. This is proven by a letter written to William and Mary Blair Mack by her brother George Blair."
Many researchers show that William Blair was born in Moneymore, Ireland in 1750. This birth place and date are both based on a Revolutionary War record that has been accepted by the DAR as this William Blair. However, recent research has brought into question whether the record quoted is the correct record for this particular William Blair.
The DAR has accepted the following service records for this soldier: "service from 28 Feb 1776 to 9 Aug 1776 (PA-II-206)."
Served in Capt.Hay's Company of the 6th PA Batt which consisted of 6 companies from
Cumberland Co. and 2 companies from York. PA. William Blair is listed as a member of the 6th Pa
Battalion "Blair, William, born in Moneymore, Co. Derry Ireland enlisted Feb 28, 1776, taken June 8, 1776, paroled Aug 9, 1776.
A notation in the DAR documentation files was also found, quoting [PA 6-11-551]: "George Sutter, John Sutter, William Blare (sic) and others as members ot the 6th Batt. of York Co. Militia signed a petition showing them to be patriotic citizens of the State of Pennsylvania." The notation on the bottom of this page by some OAR official says "NO Proof same man as above" M.L. H. 19 May 1938.
This petition does indeed appear to be this William Blair. The 6th Battalion York Co. Militia was raised in Fawn, Hopewell and Chanceford Twp. of York Co. and this service in indeed logical for this William Blair.
If this service is correct, then he is probably not the William Blair who served in the 6th and 7th Continental Line. He cannot be in 2 places at once and the above petition would point to militia service, rather than the Continental Line.
There was a William Blair who served as follows: Pennsylvania Archives, Series 1-IX, printed by the State of PA. Individual entries note Series, Vol. and page. 6th PA Battalion, Col. 7th PA Regiment, Col. William Irvine, Capt. Samuel Hay, Pvt. William Blair, enlisted for 3 years (PA 2-X-622) The exact date of this re-enlistment is not known, however the regiment listing in the PA Archives is dated 9 Mar 1777. As the regiment had only returned to Carlisle from Fort Ticonderoga in early March, they appear to have re-enlisted immediately. (PA 2-X-61 1)
7th Reg. PA Line, was paid off at Carlisle in Apr 1781 including. Capt. Samuel Hay's Co. The payroll records show a payment to William Blair, Private (PA 5-111-276)
The 6 Companies raised in Cumberland Co. appear to include Capt. Hay's Company. This company was discharged following the mutiny of the PA Line in 1781 and William, being paid in 1781, would appear to have served continuously in the company. Thus, he cannot possibly be the same soldier who is serving in the artillery regiment, having enlisted in Philadelphia and served to the end of the war which is also claimed as the service record for this William Blair by some researchers.
No one has ever submitted proof that this soldier who served in Capt. Hay's Co. and the William Blair who died in Pittsylvania Co. VA are one and the same person. The fact that another William Blair is said to have lived in York Co. (where Hay's Co. was raised) complicates this service record.
In that his birth date and place are based on the Revolutionary War record cited above. Obviously if he is not the same soldier, there is room for error in his birth date and place.
Research is on-going concerning this man and his service record. Anyone interested to contact the BSGR to determine the current status of this research.
