  • Notes
    • Doris Madeline "Zip' Weaver of New Holland Doris Madeline "Zip" Weaver, 88, of Garden Spot Village, New Holland, entered into rest peacefully on October 23, 2011.

She was the beloved wife of Richard M. Weaver who died in 2000. They were married 56 years and lived in Leola before her moving to Garden Spot Village in 2003. She was born in Coatesville, Pa., on February 8, 1923 to Gustav A. and Viola R. Zipse.

Her father had emigrated from Germany and working at Lukens Steel Co. saved money to bring his family to America. She was the youngest of five children. Her siblings were Karl, Anna, Rhoda and Harold.

In 1940, she graduated from Scott High School, Coatesville. Always wanting to be a nurse, she attended Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a RN in May 1944. While a student nurse, she met her husband, Dick Weaver who was a patient. Upon her graduation from nursing school, they married on May 6, 1944 and lived in Lancaster where she worked at Lancaster General Hospital. Most of her nursing career was spent working for the Visiting Nurse Association of Lancaster County. She was very active in caring for the people of the Welsh Mountains. As a result, she was instrumental in the development of the Welsh Mountain clinic. In 1975, she was given an award in appreciation of her dedication and service to the Welsh Mountain Medical Center. She was also awarded the distinguished Benjamin Rush Award in 1978 for her outstanding health services. Upon retiring from the VNA, she became involved with the Blind Association.

Both Doris and Dick were active in their church, Zion Lutheran Church, Leola. Their hobby was going to auctions; they loved antique-ing, a good pinochle game and being with their friends and family.

She was the beloved mother of Doris Jean "DoJe" Weaver, Fredericksburg, Va. and Dr. Delaine Madeline "Demi", married to Dr. Stephen Mandell, Lower Gwynedd, Pa. She was the loving "Nanni" to four grandchildren; Dr Kelli married to Dr. Jeff Slunt, Jennifer married to Chris Kinzer, David married to Alison Cooper and Sarah Mandell and six great-grandchildren; Todd and Madeline Slunt, Rebecca Kinzer, and Michael, Max and Alexandra Mandell. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Rosalyn Weatherholtz and Jane Feirick.

A funeral will be held Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Rd., Leola, PA 17540. A viewing will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 South Kinzer Ave., New Holland from 3 to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

The family respectfully requests contributions in her memory to be made to Zion Lutheran Church at the above address and the Lancaster Visiting Nurse Association, 1811 Olde Homestead Ln, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Arrangements are being handled by Furman Home for Funerals, Leola. (717) 656-6833
