      to me
      Mary Frances,
I have some new information for you about Daniel Oakes. You and I are both descended from Daniel. I have just finished going through the tax lists for 1797-1812. These are posted on my website now. One thing I was trying to confirm was the date of death for Daniel Oakes. All researchers have his death between 1809-1810. This is incorrect. He died between 1792 and 1793. I have just posted my analysis on the Oakes Genforum. I?ll let you read it here: http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/oakes/messages/2369.html.
Here is a listing of Daniel Oaks from the personal property tax list of Pittsylvania County from 1782-1792.
Daniel Oaks in the Personal Property Tax List of Pittsylvania County [image # on microfilm]

From 1782-1786 the tax list lists the peson charged with the tax, the number of males over 21, and then counts the property.

      1782 - 1 thite, 3 horses, 6 cattle [0184]
      1783 - 1 thite, 3 horses, 8 cattle [0210]
      1784 - 1 thite, 3 horses, 8 cattle [0222]
      1785 - 1 thite, 2 horses, 5 cattle [0237]
      1786 - 1 thite, 2 horses, 5 cattle [0237]
Starting in 1787, the tax list names the person charged with the tax, names each person over 21, the number of white males 16-21, and then counts the property.
      1787 - self, 1 horse, 4 cattle [0321]
      1788 - self, 1 horse [0380]
Starting in 1789, the tax list enumerate the numbe of males over 16, and then counts the property. The person charged with the tax is included in the enumeration.
      1789 - 1 tithe, 1 horse [0406]
      1790 - 1 tithe, 2 horses [0459]
      1791 - 1 tithe, 2 horses [0499]
The 1792 tax list (1792B) does not contain a column for white tithes.
      1792 - 2 horses [0561]
Daniel Oakes is absent from the tax list after 1792. The 1793 list shows his wife, Catherine, with 2 horses. Catherine appears in 1794 with 3 horses, in 1795 with 2 horses, and in 1796 with 2 horses. Catherine remains on the tax list through at least 1812. This researcher has not checked the years after 1812.
From this information we can conclude that Catherine Oakes is the widow of Daniel Oakes.
So far, I have been able to confirm 5 children of Daniel and Catherine Oakes: William, Margaret, John, Jesse and Phoebe. Well, that?s 5 children for Catherine and 4 for Daniel. Phoebe was born about 1797, four years after her father?s death. The register of death shows that Daniel and Catherine are the parents of Margaret Oakes Kirby. The informant for this death record was Joab Oakes, nephew of Margaret. Since Joab is the son of William, this confirms that William is Margaret?s brother. The widow, Catherine Oakes, is shown paying the tithes for her sons, John and Jesse, on the 1810 personal property tax list. Finally, Catherine gives consent for her daughter, Phoebe, to marry Wyatt Adkins. William Oaks is the bondsman. So, that is how I worked out these five children. There are probably others which I cannot prove yet.

Book: An Intimate History of the American Revolution in Pittsylvania County, Virginia by Frances Hallam Hurt.

In the family William Oakes is known as ?Old Bill,? and he was the father of Joab Oakes. He held lands lying on the east side of Snow Creek and the Kirby family held lands on the west side-part of their 3100 acres in Pittsylvania County. The Kirbys, too, were first tithables, John Kirby I died in 1772, and it was his son, John Kirby, Jr., who served in the Revolution. Bill?s son Moses married Elizabeth Hudson Kirby, who had inherited considerable land from her father, so the lands on both sides on Snow Creek became Oakes-Kirby property where the creek emptied into Pigg River. There was an Indian camp ground on this spot. The Indians were so tough, the family says that the Kirbys and the Oakses found difficulty in establishing homes. Family tradition says that a Kirby girl was scalped at Snow Creek within sight of her home. The road from Museville to Rocky Mount crosses Snow Creek by bridge. It was formerly Kirby?s Ford.
