Married Mary Jane Shorter on February 21, 1853 in Pittsylvania County, VA. He was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted along with his brother, John Dabney Wells, in Company I, 21st Virginia Volunteer Infantry on June 29, 1861. He was a Corporal and fought in 10 major battles of the War Between the States, including the Battle of Gettysburg, PA on July 1-3, 1863 and the battle of Cedar Creek, VA on October 16, 1864. It was at Cedar Creek that he fought against a cousin, John M Smith, a Union Soldier with Company E, West Virginia Infantry. He served in the CSA for the duration of the war and was discharged on April 12, 1865. Then he returned to his home at Grady, Va and resumed farming.
