Notes |
- Billie Carter Wyatt writes about her Mother and Father: I was reading about mama and daddy's wedding day, how they met and if daddy worked in D.C.? Mama and Daddy met the first time when mama was a student at Averett College and one of mama's professor's had daddy be mama's escort on the May Day Parade. Then several years later they worked together at DuPont in Martinsville and eventually began dating. When the war broke out, mama joined the Navy and when daddy proposed they decided to get married in D.C. because mama was still in basic training and had a 24 hour pass. They were married immediately following another wedding in the church and the other bride told mama she would be glad for her to use her flowers. After their overnight honeymoon, daddy returned to Danville and mama remained in D.C. She would ride a coal train to Danville as often as she could to see her new husband. Then when she became pregnant with her first child, which she lost ultimately, she was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 4th, 1945. Mama was always so proud of that. Daddy was unable to join the service due to hearing loss in his right ear. But he did join what is now the Virginia Defense Force, to assist our servicemen. I am very proud of them both!

Birth: Nov. 30, 1922, Fieldale, Henry Co., Va.
Death: 6 May 2009, Danville Pittsylvania Co., Va.
Rowena Shaw Carter, 86, of 505 Oxford Place, died the morning of May 6, 2009, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after being in the hospital for 12 days. Mrs. Carter was born a daughter of the late Clyde Smith Shaw and the late Estelle Holland Shaw on Nov. 30, 1922, in Fieldale.
On March 30, 1945, Rowena married William "Bill" Daniel Carter, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Carter served her country as a member of the U.S. Navy in World War II. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where she was the director of the junior choir, sang in the sanctuary choir for more than 50 years and prepared the bread for communion for the last 13 years. She was very proud of herself for graduating Patrick Henry Community College with an Associate of Science degree in nursing, making the president's list and becoming a registered nurse at the age of 57. Mrs. Carter is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Kirkland of Lynchburg, Susan Carter of the residence, and Billie Wyatt and her husband, Jim, of Danville; two grandchildren, Alex Kirkland and his wife, Jennifer, of Michigan, and Edward T. Yeatts and his wife, Amanda, of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Jacob W. Kirkland and James T. Yeatts; and one sister, Derothadeane "Dot" Perry and her husband, Jimmy. Many nieces and nephews, who she loved dearly, also survive her. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two infant children and one grandson, William Daniel Yeatts. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Fairview United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

I just entered William "Bill" Daniel Carter's obituary and also his wife's. I also found their marriage on genealogybank.com They married at the Mount Vernon Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. She was a Navy Yeoman at the time, on 30 Mar 1945. I'm wondering if he might have been working in D.C.?? and that's how they met as her parents lived in Martinsville at the time.
